at Thames Road.
By MRS. WILLIAM ROHDE
The regular church service
was held Sunday with a fair
attendance. The children's
story was entitled "Do You
Believe It".
The ,Scripture Lesson was
read by Rev. Robert
Matheson.
At this time of year It•has
become a tradition to wonder
what we should give up for
Lent., All too often our ex-'•
ploration . oT ourselves to
decide what to give up is, at ,
best, a half-hearted attempt.
Just like New Year's resolu-
tion Lenten abstinence is easy
• •to think about but it is a dif-
ficult act to maintain for any
length of time.
Just why do we speak of -
giving something up for Lent?
We need only to look at the
meaning of the Cross to
understand. Christ gave His
life for our sake - how can we
make our willingness to offer
ourselves known to Him?
Giving up personal bad
habits, a good .idea at any
time of year, is not really the
kind of eziercise called for.
during the Lenten season. If
we succeed at giving up our
personal bad habits we
Channel Master
ourselves are the real
witness.
Doing away with something
bec6use of Lent, however, re-
quires • that we be outward
looking - answering our call to
Christ by giving ourselves for
the sake of others just as
Christ has given of Himself
for our sake.
The issues we need to con-
centrate on are the cultural
and corporate sins which are
• committed by one group of
the world's -population against
another.
Rev. Robert Matheson.
spoke a few words on Mission
entitled _ "Toward
Development".

By ALIFE DICKENS
Ailsa Craig
The Ailsa Craig Gala Days
committee is mounting an
emblem competition to
decide for all time what
depiction of a turtle, or
turtles, will be used as the of-
ficial symbol of all events
related to the world-famous
annual turtle races here.
Submissions are being
sought from young people
throughout the area and a
cash prize of $100 will be
awarded to the creator of the
winning entry. Five $10
Awards of Merit will be made
to runnersup. The emblem
contest starts today and
deadline for entries is March
31. The winner will be an-
nounced April 15.
In announcing the competi-
tion, the Ailsa Craig Gala
Days committee stipulated
entrants be under the age of
20 and attend one of the
following area schools: North
Middlesex District High
:school; East Williams;
Ausable Springs; Parkhill -
West Williams; McGillivray
Central-; Craigwood; Sacred
Heart.

available at those schools,

Benders Market in Parkhill
and at the Nairn Variety

. In other business at its re-
cent meeting, the Gala Days
• committee discussed making
a drastic reduction this year
in entry fees charged to Gala
Days events. A spokesman
said 1983 Gala Days admis-
sion charges likely would be
slashed to half the rates
' charged Iasi year in spite of
increased costs during the
past year.
An announcement of the
1983 admission charges to
Gala Days events is expected
to be made after the commit-
: tee's March meeting..Also to
be announced, as ar-
rangements are completed, is
a list of exciting new events
planned for the 1983 event to
be held July 15-17 this year.
