In two earlier games Ex- eter defeated the host team, Norwell 15-3 and 25-8. The wins were not as decisive as Old birds bat birds By Erma Weernink Thursday night, thirty-six aspiring badminton players took part in the, annual Old Folks Tournament organized by the South Huron Badmin- ton Club. The winners were Angelena Malik and Mr. Zankowski in mixed doubles. Brian Topp and Mr. McKnight in mens doubles and Gorinneand Er- ma Weernink in ladies doubles. Several other players also received prizes. This includ- ed Mr. Epp for being the player who sweated the most. Miss Wild and Murray Run- dle were given the long distance runner awards. Mr. Boyle was the winner of some vitamins for being the most exhausted player at the end of the night. Scott Bogart was awarded as the player who needed to clean up his act and it was decided that Mr. Pearce would be in the greatest pain the next morning. A raffle was also held for the participants. A gym bag, donated by RSD Sports Den, was won by Brian Topp. Scott Lovie • was the winner of a badminton racquet, donated by the badminton club. *.************ * * * A Used * * Volkswagen... * ** * * * * * * * * * * $6995 * * 81 Rabbit LI * *Diesel 5 speed, 2* * door complete * *with these* *features: * * *• Front wheel drive *• AM/FM radio * *• Rear wiper/washer * * • Black with blue velour * * interior * *• Passive restraint * * system * *• Flow through . * * ventilation * *• Vent windows * *• Four way hazard * * lights * *• Rear defroster * * • Remote control left * * and right mirrors * • Day/night rear view * * mirror . * *• Vanity mirror * *• Adjustable headrests * *• Three speed wind * * shield wipers * * • Tinted glass all * •* around *• Fully carpeted lug- * * gage compartment * • Halogen headlamps * • Trip odometer * Don't settle for less * * * * * Don't Hesitate, Call * Billy -Joe * Rowcliffe * Today * * Ate#o-#* • * Exeter * * Toll Free: * * 1-800-265-7034 * 235-1100 * * ************** they should have been as players were often caught out of position. The absences of strong spiker Faye Geiser and setter Cheryl Cann were difficult to make up for. South Huron should have been able to defeat the strong yet inferior Listowel team. However after falling behind' the team had difficulty get- ting it back together. Listowel wort both games 15-9 and 15-10. South Huron had trou- ble retrieving balls close to the net. The usually strong spikes of Patti Willis were not as effective against Listowel. Exeter is now 11 and 5 in the league, having lost two to Stratford Central and Listowel and one to Seaforth. The girls will have to play well this Thursday in Clinton to uphold their record. In this final league tournament South Huron will meet Strat- ford Northwestern, a team who has beaten Exeter and has only lost to Stratford Cen- tral and Goderich the team with whom South Huron is tied for third place. The teams' rankings after regular season play will decide what pool it will be in for the playoffs. The top three teams in each pool qualify for the semi-finals. South Huron hopes not to be in the same 'pool as either Stratford teams as their semi-final prospects will be in jeopardy if they lose to one other team. The senior team will be able to experience tough competi- tion as they play exhibition at Stratford Central today and compete in the Laurier Tour- nament this weekend. Strat- ford Central has the con- fidence that goes with several OFSSA championships, and which South Huron will have to overcome to procure a WOSSA berth. . The London Laurier Invita- tional has seven strong Lon- don teams, including first ranked Oakridge, as well as five teams from the surroun- ding are,. South Huron has played and defeated three of these teams, but will have to play exceptionally well to qualify for the semi-finals. Senior boys win Boys high school basketball season is finishing up its regular season. South Huron played two league games last week against Wingham and St. Marys. The seniors won both of their games as well as Seaforth's weekend tourna• ment. The juniors also won both league games. These wins put the juniors at four wins and three losses and sixth place in Huron - Perth standings. They must win at least one of their three remaining games to retain that final playoff spot. Today they play Listowel in Exeter. Monday they travel to Goderich and play in Palmerston 'next Wednesday. All the junior teams are tough so South Huron will have to play well to win. The juniors were strong against Madill, Thursday. They led all the way and defeated Wingham, who has won only one game all season, 50-29. Scott Lovie led scoring with 18 points. Blayne Epp put in 10 points. Monday in St. Marys, the score was closer, 43-35. All players contributed, with Lovie again top scorer with 12 points. The senior team is on its way to a Huron -Perth cham- pionship or as coach Terry O'Rourke states "the worst would be second". Their pre- sent league standing is second with six wins and one loss, to undefeated Mitchell. At the recent Mitchell tournament, Exeter and Mitchell never met but South Huron won the tourney. Despite close games the junior team lost twice to Norwell and split with Listowel at last Thurs- day's league tournament in Palmerston. They won only one of their eight games in a competitive weekend tourna- ment in Forest. The team's sometimes uninspired performance at Norwell puts the juniors league record at 4 wins and 12 defeats. Coach Pete Zankowski noted that his team lost narrowly in these games against middle -of -the - pack Norwell and Listowel teams. South Huron was missing two of its stronger players, Irene Brand and Cheryl Dowson, which hurt the team's performance at the Forest tourney. Exeter's single win was against Parkhill. John Mol had 29 points against Madill to put the final score at 54-45 for South Huron. Fifteen points were added by John McAllister. Monday, all players, especially the benches, did well against St. Marys. Ex- eter's starting five could have run up the score but the se- cond stringers fared excep- tionally keeping 27-11 first quarter margin for the final 68-53 score. John McAllister was high scorer, adding 15 points. John Mol had 13 before he was knocked into the stage after going for a dunk. South Huron won the Seaforth tournament this past weekend with the second - string again playing well. O'Rourke felt their best game was Friday night • against Glencoe. Glencoe was a good team' but Exeter ex- celled to defeat them 81-52. John Mol had 27 point.. The semi-final against Lon- don Beal was tense but O'Rourke said the game shouldn't have been as close. In the final seconds John McAllister scored to break a 61-61 tie to advance Exeter in- to the finals against Seaforth. Seaforth had the advantage of home court but were no ; match for SH's 65-45 drive for the championship. John Mol had a total of 67 points in the tournament. South Huron's seniors have consistently been in the Lon- don Free Press rankings as a team to watch. Their overall record is 26 wins and 10 losses, impressive as they have played many top-notch schools. irls falter "started to wake up in the afternoon. They played some really good games." South Huron only lost 15-10 against eventual champions, Sarnia Northern. They were close against a tall Ingersoll team. The hosts had two excep- tional teams competing. As Forest does not compete in girls basketball they devote all their energy into volleyball. Zankowski com- mented that these junior tea s could have beaten Ex - et 's strong senior team. The ju 'ors were demolished by thes hard spiking teams. Thursday, Clinton hosts the final league tournament. South Huron will meet Strat- ford Northwestern and Goderich, both which they have beaten. However Zankowski concedes that "Northwestern will be a struggle." Previously he has played all players randomly regardless of skills. However in preparation for the playoffs he plans to utilize a strong permanent line in the Strat- ford games. UP AND OVER — Charlene Verbeek of SHDHS returns the ball in ai recent volleyball tournament against Seaforth. Gymnasts ready for H -P season South Huron's gymnastic coach, Gayle Ecker, is preparing her team for the upcoming Huron -Perth com- petition, which will be held March 31 at Listowel. Ecker feels they "have a strong team with lots of depth". The girls will be trying to uphold their Huron -Perth and WOSSA championships. The team started to workout in November. The five to six month season is needed, first for the girls to get in shape and improve flex- ibility, to tryout and work on moves and finally to make up, practise and perfect the routines. Just this past week the gymnasts have started working on their routines and selecting floor music. High school gymnastics consist of four apparati: the uneven bars ,the balance beam, vaulting and floor ex- ercise. Each team is allowed four competitors on each ap- paratus in each level. South Huron has full slates in its very strong junior. and elite teams but . there are not enough girls for all of the in- termediate and senior positions. In gymnastics, level is not based on age, but on your history of competition. First year gymnasts compete as juniors and must move up to intermediate if they place in Huron -Perth. This system continues through senior and elite. Gymnasts who belong to clubs compete separately in senior A and elite A sections. This year's South Huron team has a lot of talent, perhaps even more than the 1982 WOSSA championship team which qualified two members for all -Ontario com- petition. The team lost few gymnasts and gained a very strong junior team. Lee O'Rourke and Rosemany Morrissey should both place very high However, since their first competition is Huron -Perth, the juniors will be unfamiliar with preform- ing under pressure. • Elite Catherine Patterson is striving for her fourth year presence at OFSSA.Patterson looks stronger than last year but has had some trouble with a pulled leg muscle. Starr Jesney has narrowly missed qualifying for OFSSA in past years, but this may be her year. Coach Ecker looks with some trepidation toward these next few weeks before Huron -Perth. The girls essen- tially only have four weeks before competition. Two weeks are taken up by March exams and winter break. The girls will have three days after their return from holidays to perfect their routines. To minimize the time the gymansts are away from their routine, the team will practise during the March Break.
