Wednesday the local , ban- tams blanked Lucan 7-0 and Saturday it was a 4-0 win over the Goderich Elevators. Scott Heywood was in goal Fri.; Jan. 21 -Thedford Browns vs Exeter Hawks 8:30 p.m. South Hu n Rec Centre to post two straight shutouts. Sunday, Strathroy defeated the Exeter club by a score of 7-1. Scoring was well spread around in the 7-0 win over Lucan with seven different players getting at least one goal apiece. Jim Lewis was the only double scorer on passes from Terry Zachar, captain Chris Teideman and Tim Moore. Scoring goals in single fashion were Brian Quinn, Dave Woodfipe, Sean Whiteford, Chris Tiedeman and Terry Zachar. Helping on two goals each were Zachar. Quinn and Moore. One assist apiece were contribu " by Whiteford, Tiedeman, Ron Louckes and Ted,Lawson. Terry Zachaj fired two suc- cessful shojs in"the victory over Goderich. One was on an unassisted effort and the other on a pass from Chris ' i eman. Also scoring on solo dashes were Brian Quinn and Sean Whiteford. South Huron all stars in Hensafl The annual South Huron in- termediate hockey all star game is all set for Saturday night at the Hensall arena. The best of the five teams in the South Huron league will take on the all stars from the North Oxford league. The two loops have been playing an in- terlocking schedule. Selected to play goal for the South Huron team are Steve Wells of Centralia College, Steve Sararas of the Hensall Sherwoods, Doug Fairbairn Oldtimers The Exeter Molting Hawks gained an even split in two old timerhockey games this week. Saturday the locals edged the East London Oldtimers 6-5 and Monday they dropped a 5-2 decision to Dorchester. Keith Ahrens scored two goals late in the third period to give the Hawks the win over East London. He scored once earlier. Frank Boyle scored two goals and Bob McDonald one to complete the Exeter scoring. Pete McFalls and Keith —Ahrens were the Exeter marksmen in the loss to Dorchester. 4 NOVICE LOSE The Exeter novice hockey team suffered a 7-4 defeat to Parkhill in Shamrock league play, Sunday afternoon. ..Jason Heywood scored all- four Exeter goals. Three came on unassisted efforts and the fourth on a pass pro- vided by Allan McFalls. Daniel Kustermans led the Parkhill club to victory with a four goal performance and Shayne Robinson fired three successful shots. of the Exeter Mohawks ane Zurich Buckeyes Kevin Geoffrey. The league leading Hensall Sherwoods - will . be represented by Jamie Caldwell, Dave Kinsman, Ken Varley, Gary Koehler and Terry Caldwell. Other Exeter Mohawks on the team are Brian Mercer, Jim Gue.nther, Dave Atthill, Brian Taylor and Brad Taylor while the Zurich Buckeyes are Rick Moody, Dan Lagerwerf, Ron Rader, Kris Bedard and Mar- vin Merner. Jack Chaffe, Rob Deloyer, Steve Sack and Kevin Giffin have been selected from the Centralia College Saints and the Centralia Marauders named to the all stars are Matt Muller, Blair Hearn, Mark Cronvn and Perry Knee. Jack Chipchase of the Ex- eter..Mohawks will be the coach and Hensall Sherwood John Baker is the manager. The trainer is Carl Finkbeiner of the Zurich Buckeyes. League• statistician Bob Somerville will be the announcer. Junior volleyball team gets victory The junior girls volleyball team of South Huron has won their first game of the season. Wingham dropped to the im- proving squad 15-2 in the se- cond league tournament of the season, hosted by Strat- ford Central last Tuesday: Junior coach Pete Zankowski attributes his Irish Iose.tw� The Lucan Irish were on the losing end of both of their of their games played this week `in the Western Junior "D" hockey league. Wednesday on home ice, the Irish were edged 4-3 by the•league leading Tavistock Braves and Friday night in Seaforth they were bounced 6-3 by the Centennaires. They swing back into action on three occasions this week with the first two contest'at the Lucan arena. They will host the Port Stanley Lions Wednesday night and Friday the Mitchell Hawks will be in. Sunday the Irish are back in Mitchell for a return engage- ment with the Hawks. In the loss to Tavistock, all Lucan scoring came in the first two , periods. Captain Paul Wraith finished off a three-way passing effort wit1i Jamie Shipley and Dave Paton when the game was on- ly a minute old and at 13:58 of the first period Doug Latta converted a. pass from Jeff Skinner. Near the end of the middle frame Steve Glenn registered the third goal of the night for the Irish on a pass from Steve Thompson. Scoring in single fashion for Tavistock were Steve Neeb, Terry Quehl, Reid Dundas and Paul Albrecht. Again in the defeat in Seaforth, the Irish scoring was confined to the first half of the game. • Dave Egan notched the on- ly Lucan goal of the first period on passes from Dave Patton and Geoff Edwards. In the second 20 minutes of play, Jamie $iipiey con- verted a pass from Doug Lat- ta and Egan scored again with Edwards and Latta pro- viding the necessary passes. Dave Murrayled the Seaforth scoring attack with a two goal effort. Scoring in single fashion were Dave Mcllwain, Mike Kelly, Pete Van Drunen and Mark Murra teams improvement to "an attitude improvement. They know now that they can win." He notes that their serve reception is considerably better. Before their win Wingham had trounced South Huron 15-2. It is significant that they rallied back from this loss to, win the second game so decisively. In past they have become frustrated with their losses. South Huron's juniors also met with the skilled Stratford Central team. Exeter lost both games but they were by no means trampled: The scores were re>;pectable as Stratford won 15-11 and 15-6: The team's improvement is encouraging to both coach and players. Zankowski em- phasizes that he does not play - so much to win as to gain ex- perience. He plays alt fifteen of his players and keeps in mind that this regular season means nothng as all teams qualify for the playoffs. He hopes to have developed a strong team with lots of depth by play off time. The team will- be able to gain more experience at a tournament in Wingham this weekend. South Huron hosts its Teague tournament on Thursday, February 3. Ex- eter will play Mitchell and Seaforth. Zankowski believes his team will be able to have more wins over these com t . rabl -skilled teams. Brad Taylor assisted on the winning and insurance markers. in the first period, Dave At- thill notched his first goal of the game with Brad Taylor and Dave Robinson assisting. Jim Guenther made it 2-0 on passes from Taylor and Robinson and Tom Ryan con- verted a pass from Luc Gagnon for the third Exeter score. The Buckeyes bounced right hack in the second period with four straight unanswered goals to go in' front 4-3. Mark Kirk sunk a` pass froth Paul Haggitt, Kris Bedard hit the net on passes from Greg Kirk and Wayne Thiel, Ron Rader completed a passim combination with Jeff O'Brien and Rob Grenier was successful on passes from Rick Moody and Kris Bedard. With 11 seconds left in the middle frame Brad Taylor notched the tying goal for the Mohawks with Brian Taylor and Luc Gagnon assisting. The Mohawks will he represented in Saturday's South Huron all star game at the Hensall arena by goalie Doug Fairbairn, defencemen Jim Guenther and Dave At- thill and forwards Brian Mercer, Brad Taylor and Brian Taylor. As coach of South Huron senior girls basketball team as well as both junior and senior boys teams, since his teaching career here began, O'Rourke has had great ex- perience coaching basketball. During the summer he coaches at Olympia Sports Camp and the All Pro Basket- ball Camp at Trent University. • His senior girls teams have been very successful under his coaching. Last year they captured the Huron -Perth championship. This year after an undefeated season, South Huron conceded the championship to Stratford Central. At W.O.S.A.A. the teams play was very respec- table, losing to Catholic Cen- tral in the preliminary round. O'Rourke graduated as quite a sports hero from Regina Mundi and the University of Western On- tario: He has always been in- terested in basketball. The coaching appointment was made by the Ontario Amateur Basketball Associa- tion and was somewhat of a surprise to O'Rourke. He had applied for the position for the - past several years and only this year, not having submit- ted an application, was he chosen. The team O'Rourke will choose and coach is part of the Junior Development Pro- gram. In the spring -basket- ball players, female 'and under eighteen years of age (there is a similar men's team) will try out for the Southwestern ,team. This region has considerable basketball talent. It includes Sarnia and Kitchener and as far north as Owen Sound. The girls have a try -out week, after which a ten girl Juveniles lose to Port Stanley The Exeter juveniles scored two early goals in Port Stanley, Saturday, bur then watched from the penalty box as the home team came back with seven straight to post a 7-2 triumph. Four of the Port Stanley goals came on the powerplay as Exeter picked up 22 penalties, including a game m isconduct to Dave Rowcliffe on his first shift on the ice in the first period. Steve Batten shot Exeter in- to a quick lead when he blasted a shot into the top cor- ner after taking a pass from Eric Tadgell and then Brent Dawson made it 2-0 when he sailed the length of the ice to connect on a nifty solo effort. From that point, the game degenerated into a slugfest, with a steady stream of players to the penalty box. O'Rourke is very much looking forward to this coaching experience.
