eter juniors Brian and Kevin
Bestard play for.
Brian ' Campbell's
breakaway goal was. the dif-
ference as Pfaffs won 2-1.

other goal for Pfaffs. This put
the Exeter team in the
semifinals against the strong
Thedford Raiders team.

Dearing and Brooks each
scored two goals. Brooks fired

A CHAMPION FACEOFF -- Ron Bogart who organiz-
ed the fir, t Exeter Hawks junior tournament six years
ago dropped the puc'for the final game Sunday night
between Paul Albrecht of the Tavistock Braves and Mur-
ray Hunter of the champion Grand Valley Harvesters.
Volleyball starts
South Huron's girls
volleyball teams used their
first league games of last
Wednesday at Mitchell as ex-
perimental practices. The
junior team lost all four of
their games to St. Marys and
Clinton. Playing senior teams
from the same schools Ex-
eter's seniors were victorious
in all matches.
The junior team had many
troubles and appeared
unorganized and often
uninspired. Coach Zankowski
said "they played three
reasonable games and one
bad one."
The team managed to stay
close to a strong St. Marys
team but fell apart against
Clinton, whose reputation in
volleyball has never been
great. Zankowski felt his
team's showing was not that
bad considering it was its first
competition and he played all
15 of his players.
The junior girls were
unable to effectively receive
serves and set the ball up.
Zankowski noted that when
they did get the ball their ser-
ving was strong.
Both juniors and seniors
played league again last
night, meeting Stratford Cen-
tral, the feared teams, and
Wingham.
Senior coach Joe Fulop as
well as Zankowski are keep-
ing in mind and placating
their players that the regular
.season actually means
nothing.
In a nein Huron -Perth set-
up all teams qualify for the
playoffs. Placing during the
season is insignificant
because the 'seeding' is so ar-
ranged that the teams who
placed as an odd number
(first, third. fifth, etc.) play
together whine the even
numbered learns meet in the
playoffs. -
The top three teams in each
pool go on to the finals. This
year's arrangement differs
from other years also in that
both Huron and Perth teams
play together .during the
season. In past years teams
from Iluron County would not
meet Perth teams until the
playoffs. usually a one day
tournament.
The thought that -these ear-
ly league games mean very
little has calmed the
volleyball players but the
seniors admit it feels good to
have four • wins already.
The 'senior volleyball team
started strong against St.
M9rys but became- steadily
worse until the last game
against Clinton which was
very poor. All Toth- games
were won handily by eight or
nine points but Fulop knows
his team can play better.
Usually consistent players
Faye Gaiser and Patti Willis
were having trouble. South
Huron's normally strong ser-
ving was not apparent at this
tournament with the excep-
tion of "Leslie Hunter-Duvar
who brought the team from a
7-7 tic to a 15-7 win against St.
Marys.

SH Gagers prove coach to be right
Terry O'Rourke judged his
senior boys basketball team
well as he,predicted a win
over Stratford Central.
Defeating the Ramblers at
home Friday night 72-51,
South Huron seniors are now
one and one in the regular
season.
The junior team is also one
and one after losing to Central
47-34. South Huron's midget
team were overwhelmed by
the more experienced Strat-
ford players 45-19.
Friday's games were
;played in front of a spirited.
home crowd that cheered the
seniors' to their tremendous
scoring drives. In the first
quarter the score was 22-6 as
the Panthers were able to
shut- down Peter Shantz, a
good Stratford outside
shooter. Shantz still managed
21 points in the high scoring
game.
For Exeter, John Mol had
an incredible 38 points.
O'Rourke noted that Mol's
scoring "was a result of the
whole team's playing well."
South Huron's offensive plays
woi'ketl well so that they were
able to get the ball in to the
tall centre. Mol should be able
to work toward a high scoring
average thi§ season. Kevin
Parsons had 14 points for
South Huron.
South Huron juniors
weren't able to .control the
game as well as the seniors as
they met a good Central
team. The game was close
throughout with Stratford on-
ly up by five at the half. South
Huron lacked the height to
compete with the Ramblers
on the boards. Rob Tait was
hot with 19 points. -
The midget team was com-
pletely outplayed by Stratford
Central. Coach Crawford felt
it was evident that Central
had far more practice than
his team who managed only
one of 14 shots at the foul line.
Again South Huron's lack of
height hurt their efforts.
Fulop feels his team is the
best he has coached for.
several years and should be
able to compete equally with
the reigning all -Ontario
champions from Stratford'
Central.
Main Street 235-1570
All three Exeter teams met
teams from Petrolla this
Monday night in Exhibition
play. The midgets were again
trampled 63-30. Petrolia's
juniors used their height ad-
vantage to come on strong of-
fensively leaving Exeter trail-
ing 57-39.
Only the senior team
managed to defeat Petrolia,
60-54. O'Rourke commented
that "they played bad enough
to win". With second -
stringers playing the game
often was scrappy, and was
definitely not comparable to
Friday's play against Strat-
ford Central.
In their third league games
Exeter teams host Seaforth
today. O'Rourke is looking to
beat both Seaforth's juniors
and seniors. After seeing
Seaforth's senior team play
he is confident that Exeter
will be able to beat them at
the boards.
Both juniors and seniors
will see exhibition play next
Tuesday as they travel to
Regina Mundi in London.
Badminton
Four South Huron athletes
competed in a badminton
tournament on the weekend.
Angelina Malik and Kendra
Arthur won the B section of
girls doubles. Kendra also
was the singles B section.
Lovekesh' Malik and Pete
Jansen also played in the
tournament hosted by the
Stratford Badminton Club.
The tournament brought
together many good players
from South Western Ontario,
many who play all -year
round. The consolation wins
of Arthur and Malik are
especially - impressive
because the girls have only
been practising on Thursday
evenings during the Exeter
area badminton club.
The regular badminton
season will not commence un-
til the volleyball and basket-
ball seasons are completed,
which will not be until March.
In recent years, South
Huron's badminton teams
have been very successful.
Two doubles teams coached
by Ontario Badminton club
member, Pat Rowe, qualified
for the all -Ontario champion -
ship last year, The doubles
team of Ronnalee Bogart and -
Mata Gans placed third at
OFSSA In 1982.
The 1983 badminton team
should again be impressive
with many juniors vying for
positions at W.O.S.S.A.
