Junior 'D' league games this week and upped their seaspn point total to 40, six back of The leading Tavistock Braves and 15 ahead of the third place Thedford Browns. Tuesday, the Irish dropped a 4-2 decision in Tavistock 4-2 and the nextmieht in Lucan Exeter Mohawks Thurs., Jan. 13 8:30 p.m. Exeter vs Zurich Sun., Jan. 16 8 p.m. Exeter vs Ripley they downed the Seaforth Centennaires 5-3. In the loss to Tavistock, Jeff Skinner scored for the Irish in the second period on a three- way effort with Steve Thom- son and Steve Glenn and in Local juves on losing end St. Marys juveniles scored a 6-0 win over Exeter in a Shamrock loop game at the rec centre, Friday. The lop team in the league scored four of their tallies on the powerplay as the locals took. 13 of the 19 minor penalties called in the contest. Scoring for Tavistock were KenWettlaufer with two goals and Paul Albrecht and Jeff Kaufman with one each. Three goals in the second period made the difference for the Irish in Wednesday's 5-3 win over Seaforth. Paul Wraith scored for the Irish in the first period on a pass from Jeff Skinner and Jamie McClinchey replied for Seafort). In the second period, Mark Thomson, Steve Glenn and Art Gregory registered for Lucan with Wraith, Gregory and Skinner providing the assists. Jamie McClinchey scored again for Seaforth in the mid- dle frame and Mark Murray completed his team's scoring in the final 20 minutes of play. The fifth and final Lucan goal came from the stick of Doug Latta in the third period. Assisting were Dave Egan and Paul Wraith. Molting Hawks get even split The Exeter Molting Hawks gained an even split in two oldtimer.hockey games this week. Friday, they doubled the score 8-4 on the London Old Indians and Monday night they dropped a 5-3 decision to Strathroy. In the win over London, the Molting Hawks jumped into a 3-0 first period lead on suc- cessful shots by Frank Boyle. Keith Ahrens and Bob McDonald with Ahrens, Al Flynn and Rete McFalls drawing assists. The Exeter oldsters again scored three times in the mid- dle frame. It was Bob McDonald with his second goal of the game, Pete McFalls and Mike Cushman. Assisting were Bob Jones, Jim Russell, Walt Tiedeman, Jim Pfaff and Jim MacDonald. The final Exeter goals com- ing in•the third period were fired by Al Rundle on a three- way effdrt with McFalls and Jones and Jones with assists going to McFalls and Boyle. Scoring for the Molting Hawks in Monday's loss to Strathroy were Jim Mac- Donald, Frank Boyle and Jim Russell. Providing the passes were Keith :Ahrens. Bob McDonald, Pete McFalls, Walt Tiedeman and Jim McDonald. Atoms win in Lucan The Exeter atoms gained a 1-0 victory over Lucan in a hard fought game in Shamrock league play, Saturday. Rob McLelland scored mid- way through the third period to give the Exeter club the margin of victory in Lucan. Herten' Tinney and Shannon llrudka assisted on the goal. Steve Sillery provided strong r+,oalter,.lirng in picking up his second shutout of the season. Chris Smith was also sharp in the Lucan goal allow- ing only one shot to get by him. T -A photo Sherwoods edge Mohawks In Tuesday night South Huron intermediate hockey league action, the Exeter Mohawks downed the Lakeside Stampeders 8-5 and Thursday they dropped a close 5-4 decision to the league leading Hensall Sherwoods. The Mohawks will be back in action tomorrow night, Thursday when they play host to the Zurich Buckeyes at the South Huron Rec Centre at 8:30 p.m. and Sunday night at 8 p.m. they are at home to Ripley. The Sherwoods have lost only one game soo far this season while Thursday's loss for the Mohawks was their third of the year. The outcome of the game was in doubt right to the very end. Each team scored two goals in the first period and one apiece in the . middle frame and Hensall outscored Exeter by two goals to one in the final 20 minutes of play. Terry Caldwell opened the scoring for the Sherwoods at 9:36 of the first period on a three-way combination with Ken Varley and Jamie Caldwell and Dwight Consitt made the score 2-0 less than two minutes later as he con- verted a pass from captain Dave Kinsman. • Brad Daters put the Mohawks on the scoreboard at 17:48 on a play started by Doug Fletcher and Barry Baynham and with 40 seconds left in the opening period Brian Taylor tied the score with assists going to Tom Ryan and, Luc Gagnon. Gagnon was on the firing end of the second period Ex- eter marker on passes from Rick Lindenfield and Brian Taylor while Dave Kinsman replied for the Sherwoods. Assisting were Altan Taylor and Lloyd Allan. • Jamie Caldwell put Hensall ahead at 7:37 of the third period on a pass from Ken Varley and two minutes later Lloyd Allan registered what proved to be the winning goal with Dave Kinsman providing an assist. The final Exeter score came at the midway mark of the period• from the stick of Luc Gagnon with Jeff Fuller drawing the assist. Win in third The Mohawks gained Tues. - day's win over Lakeside, defending champions of the North Oxford league with Marauders win over Brooksdala Seven straight unanswered goals in the last half of the game sent the Centralia Marauders on the way to a 7-3 win over Brooksdale in a South Huron hockey league game Friday night at the Stephen township arena. The. Marauders facing a 3-0 deficit scored two goals in the last six minutes of the second period to get a little closer. Pete Gill opened the scoring on a three-way effort with Bill Hodge and Terry Underhill and Jim Hayter registered on a play started by Pete Gill and Malt Muller. In the third period, Mark Cronyn on a passing combina- tion with Bill Hodge and Rick Funston tied the score and Matt Muller scored what pro- ved to be the winner on an unassisted effort. ,Mark Cronyn notched the fifth goal on a solo dash and late in the game Blair Hearn converted a pass from Jim Hayter and Rick Funston tallied on a pass from Perry Knee. Brian Taylor was the Mohawks leader in the scor- ing department with three goals and a pair of assists for a five point night. Luc Gagnon assisted on two of Taylor's successful shots and Barry Baynham and .Tom Ryan assisted in single fashion. Gagnon was on the firing end of two Exeter goals with Taylor getting two assists and Rick Lindenfield helping on one. Mike Desjardine scored for -the Mohawks on passes from Tom Ryan and Barry Baynham, Ryan registered with assistance from Jim Guenther and Baynham and Doug Fletcher hit the Lakeside net on a play started by Rick Lindenfield and Barry Baynham. One behind Seaforth January 12, 1983 Page 9 Hawks dropped to fifth The Exeter Hawks were dumped out of the fourth an final playoff spot in- the nor- thern division of the Western Junior 'D' loop this week. Seaforth slipped past the skidding Hawks, as they posted two victories, while the Hawks were thumped 10-1 by Tavistock in their only outing. The Centenaires now lead the lfawks by a single point, but the Exeter crew have a game in hand. The two squads met for their final time last night in Seaforth in one of the key games for the season for both. The Hawks host Mitchell on Friday as they return for their first league gatne in the rec centre in over a month. Tavistock has now built up a six -point bulge over Lucah for top spot in the loop. Thed- ford holds down third with. three-point lead over Seaforth and four more than the Hawks. Mitchell continues in Exeter Hawks Fri., Jan. 14 Mitchell Hawks vs Exeter Hawks South Huron Rec Centre the basement, four points behind Exeter. The league leading Braves had no trouble with the inept Hawks on Friday night as they romped to an easy 10-1 verdict, sending the locals to their fourth straight defeat. The Braves took control of the game with two goals Mid- way through the first period and were leading 4-1 by the end of the stanza. They pumped in three unanswered goals in each of the final two frames to post the lopsided victory. They peppered netminder Mike Tadgellwith 38 shots, while the Hawks managed on- ly 23 on Maury Sauder. The Hawks did manage to win the penalty parade as they sat out 11 of the 20 min - tors called. The Braves scored twice with a man ad- vantage and added insult to injury when they scored twice in the final period while play- ing a man short.
