Change of heart
Early duringthe just concluded National Football
League strike, a couple of CFL games were carried on
American television netw$rks.
Several comments were made by the announcers
as to the Ind we quote "odd rules" which are used in
Canada.
The one "odd" rule referred to was the no yards
penalty for any tackler coming closer than five yards
to an opposing player catching a punt or a kickoff.
, A few weeks ago Frank Beckman of WJR Detroit
who is involved with the Lions football broadcasts said
it might be a good idea if the Canadian no yards rule
was adopted by the Nrtional Football League.
He was referring to a couple of instances in the first
games after the strike when on punts, the return man
was hit by a tackler before he even touched the ball.
In these instances serious injuries could happen as the
fellow waiting for the ball is not expected to be hit before
the ball arrives.
The long layoff of the NFL due to the strike appears
to have more effect on the kickers than any other part
of the game.
On a number of occasions in recent games, point
after touchdown kicks have gone astray which in the
past has almost been unheard of and field goal tries
from fairly close in have missed.
While the playoff picture in the NFL will be settled
by the time this issue hits the streets, some 11 teams
still had.a chance although in some cases very remote
to fill one of the four remaining playoff spots available. -
Despite the high finishes of the Los Angeles Raiders
and the Washington Redskins in their respective divi-
sions we will go out on a limb and predict two other
clubs to meet January 23 in the Super Bowl.
How about the Pittsburgh Steelers to represent the
American Conference and the Dallas Cowboys to
emerge as the best in the National Conference?
After a very slow start the veteran Terry Bradshaw
is starting to put things together for the Pittsburgh
Steelers. Put his experience and that of coach Chuck
Noll together and they could come up with the surprise
of the year.
In the other division, the Cowboys despite a surprise
loss a week ago to the Eagles will be tough when the
chips are down.
Coach Tom Landry himself is one of the big changes
for the Cowboys. Landry well known fbr years wear-
ing his fedora and dress suit has now switched to wear-
ing a warmup jacket similar to many of the other
coaches.
Caps also flying
When talking about the great showing of the
Washington Redskins, another team based in the area
of the United States Capital is making fans sit up' and
take notice.
'ilk Washington Capitals are on a real splurge in
the National Hockey league and are close to taking over
first place in the Patrick Division.
With no one in the top 12 positions in the NIIL scor-
ing race, the Capitals are being successful with a great
defensive game.
Of the 22 teams in the league, the Capitals are
fourth on the list for the fewest- goals allowed with 122
at thetime of writing.'
The Boston Bruins, leaders in the Adams Division
are the best defensive club followed by the Norris Divi-
sion leading Chicago Black Hawks and the Buffalo
Sabres.
Against 'new parks
A recent release from the Ontario Federation of
Anglers and Hunters indicates that group is against a
Province of Ontario proposal to create 245 more Pro-
vincial
Parks.
The Federation points out that the designated areas
are already Crown land which does not need to be.put
into formal parks for protection as it is already under
government control. •
Many of the proposed parks would eliminate hun-
ting which provides countless days of recreation to On- .
tario sportsmen and a 700 million dollar contribution to
the Ontario economy.
The 130 existing Ontario Provincial Parks already
occupy 10,521,406 acres. The proposed 245 parks not
counting any National parks would add another 10
milliva- acres.
