Soccer at Grand Bend
While the Colonials sit out
for a rest, the other teams in
the Grand Bend soccer
league seem to be holding
their own as the season
progresses.
The Atoms team beat
Arkona June 13, 2-1, on goals
scored by Allan Campbell
and David O'Connor. On
June 15, however, they
didn't fare as well, and lost
to Ilderton.
The "B's" played Lucan in
a good match, winning 6-1.
This win was probably due to
Raymond Vlemmix, who
played a good game in net.
In a Sarnia tournament,
they beat West Williams 3-2.
Grand Bend goals were
scored by Guy Wilde, Carl
Wilde and Bill Mennen.
In their second game at
the tournament they lost to
the top Sarnia team 2-0.
On July 5 they will be tak-
ing part in a tournament at
Taxandria in Arkona.

Centennials win two games
The weekend was a busy
but exciting one for the
Fxeter senior Centennials
with some close games of
soccer being played.
Exeter won an exhibiton
game against Goderich 1-0
Thursday night at the
Goderich pitch under the
lights. The Cenntennials
travelled to Sarnia Sunday to
take part in the Ausable mid -
seasons tournament against
east and west teams. They
won the first game 2-0
against Nairn to advance to
the "A" championship
round, but lost to Sarnia
Italia team on a close
game 2-1, therefore
eliminating the Centennals
from any furthur action in
the tournament.
Although the game was
dominated by Exeter, the
Exeter forwards could only
score one goal in the 1-0 win
over Goderich. Early in the
second half winger Shaun
Ratteau crossed a perfectly
placed ball in front of the net.
Goderich didn't even get a
shot on the Exeter goalie in
the second half. Even with
sustained pressure Exeter
forwards only managed to
hit numerous goal posts and
crossbars.
By averaging an earlier
loss in the season against
Nairn 5-0, the whole team
came out flying and played
one of their best games to
date and came out winners 2-
0. This put Exeter in the "A"
round and Nairn in the "B"
round.
With his best game of the
season right winger Brad
Clausins scored from close in
to give the Centennials the
lead in the first half. Before
the half ended Paul Van-
dewalle found the mark with
a low hard drive into the
lower right hand corner to
up the score to 2-0.
In the second half Nairn
desperately tried to score
but came up short due to a
well played game by
fullbacks Bill White, John
Rusenburg and Dave Holms.
Excellent support
defensively and offensively
was given by halves Dick
Lord, Joe Laurie, Mike
Janju, Alfonse and Gerald
Weersink. Goalie Blair
Burbidge played brilliantly
in goal for Exeter especially
on one occasion when he had
to dive across the net to stop
a save goal by Nairn.
The second game of the
afternoon against Sarnia
Italia was a very
professionaly played soccer
game with ball control, short
passes and perfect shots
when the opportunity arose.
Even though Exeter Lost 2-1
it played a good game
against the talented Sarnia
team.
Sarnia scored the first goal
to end the first half at 1-0.
Shortly into the second half
Sarnia upped the score to 2-0.
Minutes later Alfonse
Weersink worked his way in
close enough to put a low
hard drive into the left hand
corder to put Exeter on to
within one goal.
Exeter came close on a
few occasions but couldn't
tie the game. Sarnia was
awarded a penalty shot near
the end of the game.
Goalie Blair Burbidge
gambled and dove to the
right corner where he
stopped another brilliant
chance by the opposition. An
argument arose at the end of
the game when Exeter
scored. As the ball was being
crossed and headed in the
net, the referee blew the
whistle to end the game.
the goal was disallowed
and Exeter lost 2-1.
The Exeter club is off for a
two weeks and play its next
season game in Nairn.

of 7-6 in Lucan Thursday
night.
Tonight, Wednesday the

The Cowgirls were never
ahead of the Biddulph team

triple and scored as Deb
Lord hit a long fly ball. Mer-
na Scott was then safe on an
error. Sandy O'Neill tied the
score with a triple and cross-
ed the plate with the winning
