Opening day will feature Ontario Sire Stakes for two near -old colts and geldings. A number of other feature races will be run throughout the summer months. Thursday. July 2, the Goderich Raceway will sw- ing its gates open for another meet. The two area tracks are getting together to spon- sor a pacing series. The first leg goes at Goderich on August 20 and the second will go in Clinton on August 30. This series is open to pacers between the ages of two and four years of age with winnings of less than $2,500 lifetime. Nominations will close July 1. A good round Ken Doig who is known as one of the top amateur golfers in Western Ontario doesn't appear to have lost his touch. Doig, owner of the Seaforth golf course easily won the A flight championship in Saturday's annual in- vitational tournament at the Ironwood course. He recorded a gross score of 66 putting together identical nines of 33 on the way to the championship. No strike here The current baseball strike has cut the television and radio entertainment for a lot of people not only here in southern Ontario, but, throughout all of North America. While it appears the strike could be a very lengthy one. ball fans in the area will get their chance for some live action. Sunday afternoon, July 5. That's the day, two of Ontario's top ladies fastball teams will be in town for an exhibition contest. Show- ing their talents and expertise on the diamond will be the Milverton Suns and the Milverton Millwrights. The Suns have been Ontario ladies senior champs and in the Canadian finals a number of times in recent years and the Millwrights are an up and coming junior club. Lynne Farqhuar of Exeter and Iris Marshall, formerly of the Kirkton area are valued and veteran members of the Milverton Suns. In the Millwrights lineup are two former members of the Kirkton midget championship team. They are pitcher Patti Down and third baseman Sheila Penhale. Here's a chance to see four local girls performing and at the came time support a good cause. All proceeds go to the Exeter minor ball association. A year ago, the Milverton Suns were in Hensall to play the Zurich men's fastball team and it proved to be a very interesting an exciting game. Want to advertise? Anybody wishing to advertise their product would get great coverage if they signed up for the telecast of the 1982 Super Bowl football game which comes up next January at Pontiac, Michigan. How about the cost? We just heard this week that a 30 second spot on the Super Bowl telecast will cost a sponsor $350,000. Do you know baseball? Most of us here in Canada know enough about the rules of baseball to get by if someone new to the game asks some questions. Is that right? We are not too sure about that. Two weeks ago, an English girl spent the weekend at our home and a Montreal Expos game was on televi- sion. Her first question was , "How many pitches does each batter gets Well the answer is, 'could be any amount". First we explained the strike zone between the shoulders and knees and across the 17 inch home plate. The first two pitches to the batter were balls and then the next two were strikes and that was easy. But, then the next pitch was fouled off. Her query was, What was that? Of course, that's a foul ball and a strike. but. only up to the first two strikes do they count. The batter finally hit a ground ball to the short stop and was thrown out at first. Our English friend's question was .Why do they have to catch the ball with a foot on the base'. Apparently in the English game of cricket the ball can merely be thrown to or past the base to retire the batter. Then came. Why does the pitcher lift a foot off the ground? Before we could answer that question it was time for supper and the TV was turned off. Fortunately we didn't have to explain double plays. forceouts. balks, runs scoring after a catch, sacrifices and so many things the ordinary fans take for granted eirlemele__ _-11.11.1.411.4.4.4.115 i CANADA WEEK PROCLAMATION To honour Canada, our beloved country, deeply enriched by the contribution of many cultures, fatherland of all Canadians: To honour this country, home of over 23,- 000,000 people, proud of their heritage and the freedom they enjoy; To honour this land of peace and prosperi- ty, this promised land of untold resources; To honour this land which is ours, of which we all are proud, I hereby proclaim the week of June 25th to July 1st a week of celebration to honour Canada's 114th birthday.
