Imagine being rich and
famous- queen of an empire,
leader of a powerful nation,
a movie star or rock idol.
Imagine riding in a
chautfer-driven limousine.
living in a thirty -room man-
sion or castle. flying around
the world in a private jet and
having servants to wait on
you.
Imagine being a trend
• setter and having people
copy your hair style and
clothes. Imagine drawing
crowds of admirers
wherever you go.
Glamorous? Yes. But. the
glamour has a price.
Privacy is one thing most
famous people lose. Safety is
often another.
A prominent station in life
demands keeping a high
profile. The closer the per-
son is to the public. the more
popular and successful he or
she becomes.
Town Topics
Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd C.
Roberts (nee June Bierling)
arrived in Exeter Friday
from Ojai, California. They
visited with Frieda Bierling
before going to their cottage
in Norman Heights where
they will spend the summer.
Odds'n ends
Has a price
At the same time, he or
she becomes vulnerable to
assassination attempts. The
attacker might be a trained
terrorist following elaborate
plans to kill or a sick person
lashing out in bizarre
violence.
Television cameras are
often rolling when it
happens. They show a
prominent figure smiling
and waving to an
enthusiastic crowd. Within
seconds, the scene shifts to
one of bloody terror. And the
world is stunned.
Eighteen years after the
death of President John F.
Kennedy investigators are
still theorizing about what
really happened.
A few years later
Reverend Martin Luther
King Jr. and Senator Robert
Kennedy were felled by
assassins' bullets.
If we thought
assassinations had become a
thing of the past. we were
rudely shaken by the bizarre
events of the last year -
former Beatle John Lennon
gunned down outside his
apartment building, Presi-
dent Reagen and three other
men wounded in the streets
of Washington: Pope John
Paul II, who has generated
so much love and compas-
sion, shot in the Vatican;
and most recently. Queen
Elizabeth startled by a voley
of shots that fortunately
turned out to be blanks.
Every time it happens we
are reminded of the fragility
of life of even those people
we thought were un-
touchable.
It must take great courage
to face the crowds again
knowing that even the most
elaborate safety precautions
are not foolproof. Their
wealth and their power can-
not guarantee their safety.
But senseless violence
does not plague only the rich
and famous. Every day, peo-
ple whose names may not
make the headlines are vic-
timized by the blight that
society bears.
