Contribution to the arts
Exeter aids GB Playhouse
Exeter will be making a
contribution of $250 to the
Huron Country Playhouse at
Grand Bend this year. It's
the first time council has
provided the financial
assistance.
In making the recommen-
dation, Councillor Morley
Hall said it would be Ex-
eter's contribution to the
arts and he noted this was
not a charity and the group
does not canvass locally.
Council has a policy of not
making donations to
charitable groups and they
also followed the policy of
not aiding in disaster relief
funds by turning down a re-
quest this week for a dona-
tion to the Hastings County
flood relief fund.
Commenting on the wor-
ding of the recommendation
to aid the Playhouse, Coun-
cillor Jay Campbell said he
was assuming the $250 did
not represent Exeter's sole
contribution to the arts for
the year. "We don't do much
more than that, but I like to
think we could," he added.
Council also agreed to a
recommendation from Hall
that they endorse a plea to
have the Soviet Union
release Yuriy Shukhevych
from prison. He was
arrested at the age of 14 as a
Ukrainian political prisoner
and sentenced to 10 years in
jail. He has already spent 29
years in prison.
"We are our brother's
keeper," Hall said, noting
that while Canadians take
their religious and political
freedom for granted they
should denouce the inhuman
treatment being experienced
by people in other countries.
The Council for the
Release of Ukrainian
Political Prisoners in
U.S.S.R. hope to succeed in
persuading Soviet
authorities to allow
Shukhevych and his family
to emigrate to the West.
