Special awards to Catherine Patterson, Ronolaa Bogart
Doug Hoffman wins three athletic awards at
It was a clean sweep for
high school athlete Doug
Hoffman at South Huron
District High School's
awards banquet Tuesday.
Hoffman was named
senior boys' athlete of the
year, and won both the
PantherAward. for outstan-
ding achievement and con-
tribution to the school's
athletics, and the Mike
Prendergast Memorial
Award for the graduating
student who combines ex-
cellence in basketball and
school work.
Catherine Patterson was
named junior girls' athlete
of the year. and Ronnalee
Bogart was named for the
senior girls. No award was
given for the junior boys.
About 225 people attended
the dinner and to listen to
guest speakers. the figure
skating pair of Lori Baier
and Lloyd Eisler.
The pair placed second at
the junior world competition
in London this year. and
went on to place second in
senior pairs at a Halifax
competition.
Baler described the train-
ing procedures a cham-
pionship skating pair must
go through. She said training
and preparation are the
same for all sports: a
matter of time and deter-
mination to train.
- The pair attends skating
schools in Waterloo during
the spring, summer and fall,
and during the winter com-
petition season will train
seven to eight hours per day.
Off season training in-
cludes weight lifting, run-
ning up stairs, and five mile
runs, Baler said.
She said it was necessary
to be able to relax after
training as time devoted to
skating or any sport is no ex-
cuse for grades to fall.
She noted that a full effort
in training gives a com-
petitor a mental edge when
it comes to competition.
Baier said she has gotten
more out of skating than
awards and noted placing in
competition is not as impor-
tant as giving an honest try.
Eisler spoke on the less
idealistic aspects of the
pairs training and compe-
tion.
He admitted that his social
life and school work do suf-
fer and said he misses about
four months of school each
year.
He said the rewards of
training were the chances
for travel and to meet other
competitors.He said the pair
has travelled to Germany,
France, England and has
been invited to skate in
Moscow.
He agreed with Baier on
the benefits of the efforts of
training and advised athletes
to set their goals so they
must strive to accomplish
them.
A note of sadness was in-
troduced into the awards
ceremony when it was an-
nounced teacherpoug Ellison
would be leaving the staff,
and when the Mike
Prendergast trophy was
awarded.
Prendergast was killed in

and donated money for a
