Times-Advocate, 1981-06-10, Page 8Page 8 Times -Advocate. June 10 1981 Sports Spotlight By ROSS HAUGH Bird of another colour Loyal fans of the Detroit Tigers are getting a little excited about one of their new pitchers and he's a bit reminiscent of a sensation of a few years ago. It seems that Kevin Saucier will make Tiger sup- porters forget Mark "The Bird" Fidrych a little quicker. Saucier who has come into prominence during the last month with great relief pitching has copied a lot of Fidrych's traits. The new left hander puts on quite a show by talk- ing to the ball and himself and is very exuberant when any of his team-mates make a good play. After saving a game Saturday, Saucier was pran- cing around applauding everyone. One would think the Tigers had just won the World Series. The way the Detroit club has been playing lately with the pitchers and hitters getting together at the same time, pennant fever could be just around the cor- ner. Jack Morris of the Tigers was the first pitcher in the American league to win eight games this year. Manager Sparky Anderson said early in the season, "as Morris goes. so go the Tigers." The bats are starting to come alive with fellows like Steve Kemp. Champ Summers and Lance Parrish getting hot while the double play work of Allan Trammell and Lou Whittaker is exceptional. The enthusiasm shown early in Cleveland is receding a bit as the Indians are now only one game -ahead of the Tigers and the Yankees with the big money stars are starting to put it all together. Within two weeks the Tigers should be ahead of the Indians and challenging for at least second place as the whole team pulls together. In Toronto the Blue Jays situation is going from bad to worse. One day. the Jays lose a tough one by a single run in extra innings and the next night they get completely blown out of the park. Fellows like Alfredo Griffin who have been known as steady and slick fielders are making plenty of errors. Griffin as an example has made more miscues so far during this young season than he did throughout the entire 1980 campaign. • Boom's camping again Don 'Boom' Gravett who recently took over as recreation administrator in Exeter is again presenting his annual Boom's recreation camp at the United Church campsite near Goderich. This year should be bigger and better than ever as the camp is celebrating it's 20th anniversary. The camp is regarded as one of the best in Western Ontario and a number of Exeter and area youngsters have been attending since its inception. This year it goes from August 9 to August 15 and is presented in co-operation with the Exeter recreation department. Early registration is recommended as the first 100 campers will be accepted. For the first three years, the camp was known as Boom's Kin Camp. Then the name switched to Camp Boomohra when Gravett was recreation director in Hanover and the last five years it has been known as Boom's recreation camp for boys and girls from Ex- eter and Hanover. More information can be obtained by phoning 235- 2833. Registrations may be mailed to Box 1810, Exeter. His second was a good solo effort when he picked up a loose ball and hit a weak shot which the goalkeeper han- dled but then tipped behind the line. Good goalkeeping by David Schwindt kept the Gunners in the game throughout the second half. Honourable mentions should go to Peter McAllister, Jason Hern, Jeff Burton, Richard Phillips, Ryan Lindenfield, Stephen Coegan and Anthony Glavin. Gunner player of the game was Jason Heywood. The end of the first half saw the Blizzard pressing and only a fine save from point blank range by David Schwindt stopped a certain goal. Shortly after, Jeff Beeter (Gunners) handled the ball in the penalty al'ea and Edward Bradford took the penalty shot which narrowly missed the left hand post. The second half was fairly even with the Gunners getting the better chances with Richard Philips and Ryan Lindenfield both getting two good runs from half way but losing the ball to a good Blizzard defence at the edge of the penalty area. Other good scoring thrusts for the Gunners came from Jason Heywood, Steven Rankin, Jeff Burton, Stephen Coegan and Peter McAllister. Gunners player of the game was Ryan Lindenfield.
