Dear Mr. Batten:
Upon reading your June 3
edition, there are several
serious errors in your
reporting of an accident at
William and Ann Street on
Thursday, May 28, that was
reported to the Exeter Town
Police at approximately
16:15 hours.

The most serious error is
that you stated it took almost
half an hour Or the am-
bulance to come from Dash-
wood. On checking our
Ambulance Dispatch Form
No. 547013, which is verified
by our Ambulance Tack, we
received the Call at 16:26.
Our crew was notified at
16:26 and departed from
base at 16:26. The on duty
crew had arrived back from
London at 15:58, and were
with the vehicle, having
Based and readied it for the
next call. All three times
were 16:26, so no time was
wasted in responding to the
accident.
The ambulance took the
route 83 highway to 2nd
concession to by-pass
Exeter traffic and lights.
They came in Huron Street,
and went North on William to
Ann. The ambulance arrived
at the scene at 16:35,
departed scene at 16:37 and
arrived at South Huron
Hospital at 16:39, thirteen
minutes from the time the
call was received, the
patient was in the
emergency of South Huron
Hospital.
Since the accident victim
appeared to have no serious
injury, he was removed
immediately from the car he
was sitting in, and placed in
the ambulance. The am-
bulance driver drove north
to a driveway to turn around,
then drove south past the
accident scene, to the
Hospital Emergency, as no
driver would back through
an intersection. You
reported that the ambulance
went around a block to get
back to the hospital. Now if it
were you that took the pic-
ture, you would know we did
what any normal driver
would do, and it did not
necessitate going around a
block.
On checking it out with the
Exeter Town Police, they
received and responded to
the call at approximately
16:15 hours. After a time
delay at the scene, while the
patient remained in his car,
they decided that it would be
necessary to have an am-
bulance come to remove the
patient from the car and
transport him to hospital.
The one officer than went
into the Hospital and called
set the record straight
our base to dispatch the
ambulance. Mr. Batten,
surely you are aware that an
ambulance cannot respond
until they are called.
Since you saw fit to make
your erroneous report on the
front page of your paper, we
are expecting your
correction to appear on the
front page of your paper
also, along with the reason
you are so ready to criticise
your emergency service
without first getting the
accurate facts.
Sincerely,
Hoffman Ambulance
Service Limited
James G. Hoffman
Robert H. Hoffman
ED NOTE: We apologize
for the inaccuracies in our
reporting on the above in-
cident and in misconstrueing
the injured man's half hour
wait for reaching the
hospital as being a delay on
the part of the arrival of the
ambulance. The mention of
the time was intended only to
indicate the irony of being so
close to the hospital and
there was no intent to
suggest that there was any
undue delay on anyone's part
in the procedures followed
under the circumstances.

One reason the English
language is so difficult to
read is the fact that its
spelling has so many silent
and deceptive letters. From
the sounds of English no one
can determine its spelling
and from the spelling its
pronunciation.
From the sound "riek" (or
rique or reak or reke) one
can not deduce the spelling
of "to reek havoc" From the
spelling "fete" one can not
deduce its sound -- feet or
fate or fet fut (the schwa
vowel sound).
"Thru" at one time was
pronounced with a "gh"
throat sound. The "i" had a

sound as in "ski", the "e"
sounded as in "grey".
Spelling mot change with
pronunciation. "Favor",
"jewelry"... ar mor correct
than the longer unphonetic
spelling.

Dear Sir:
In trying to complete a
task, the worst thing
Canadians can do is create a
committee, but those of us
who have served on com-
mittees and boards over the
years really do make an
effort to attain our goals. In
the process, we delay and
end up producing red tape,
or so it seems.
Often to get the job done,
the employees of the boards
and committees take over
and rescue us. Such is
exactly the case in Exeter
over the last two weeks. In a
five minute discussion with
Alvin Willert and Glen Kells
last week, it was determined
what had to be done to
complete the ball diamonds
as expeditiously as possible.
The next day, they and their
crews transformed the
community park - you should
see it!
Certainly more is to be
done, but considerable time
has been saved, and minor
baseball, softball and rec
(
ball are certainly ap-
preciative of the efforts of
these men to produce good
playing facilities.
Congratulations to all the
employees who are working
on the project, and thanks.
Sincerely,
B.F. Shaw,
Mayor.
