More than 40 local people
auditioned at Huron Country
Playhouse over the weekend,
artistic director Aileen
Taylor -Smith reports. The
only problem was the cold
weather, when people were
asked to audition in the barn,
Ms. Taylor -Smith added.
The auditions were held
Friday, Saturday and
Sunday afternoon. Children
and young people made up
the majority of those
auditioning. Of the 40 that
auditioned, only about six or
seven will be given parts.
Ms. Taylor -Smith says
that the playhouse likes to
hire as many local people as
possible. The hiring of the
rum -professionals is made
possible through an
arrangement with Actors
Equity. Only a small wage is
paid - just enough to cover
expenses, Ms Taylor -Smith
says.
Those who have not yet
purchased their season's
subscription, are reminded
that they are selling fast.
Almost 2200 season sub-
scriptions have been sold
already this year. That
figure is more than the total
sold last year.
People holding sub-
scription vouchers should
exchange them for actual
seat tickets as soon as
possible.
Ms. Taylor -Smith says
that spring cleaning is
keeping everyone at the
Playhouse busy, and flower
beds are being planted.
The first event of the
season is the memorial
dance for Eric Mcllroy this
Saturday night. Monte Carlo
night will be the following
week, and Canadian Brass
will give a one night per-
formance June 20.
Rehearsals for the first
production of the season will
be commencing soon. Ken
Livingston of London will be
directing The Fantasticks.
Starring in The Fantasticks
will be Don Fleckser, as Mr.
Bellamy. Fleckser directed
Huron Country Playhouse's
production of Anne of Green
Gables several years ago. He
is currently involved with
musical productions in
London high schools.
Playing Mr. Huckleby will
be Tom Arnott of Centralia.
Arnott appeared at Blyth
Theatre last summer.
Wayne Burnett will be
playing Elgallo. Also in The
Fantasticks will be David
Holmes, who played Al
Lewis in last summer's
production of The Sunshine
Boys. Holmes, of St. Thomas
will be familiar to many
playhouse goers. He is
presently appearing in a
television commercial for
lawn sprinklers. Also in The
Fantasticks is Peter ,Colley.
The Fantasticks opens
July 1.
Details complete
for Mcllroy Day
All the final details have
been taken care of for the
Eric Mcllroy Memorial
Day, according to com-
mittee chairman Mae
Morenz. Mrs. Morenz said
that the cairn is completed
and in place, and they are
expecting a good crowd for
the unveiling ceremony this
Saturday afternoon.

will be able to attend.
A dance is being held at
Huron Country Playhouse to
wrap up the memorial day's
events. The Lionel Thornton
Orchestra under the direc-
tion of Graydon Hopkins will
provide the music. Mrs.
Morenz says that ticket
sales are going well, but
some tickets will be
available at the door.
The day was planned to
honour Mr. Mcllroy, who
owned and operated
Lakeview Casino and many
other shops for a number of
years. Mr. Mcllroy was also
a charter member in many
organizations and service
clubs in Grand Bend.
