HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1981-06-03, Page 14Page 2A Times -Advocate, June 3, 1981 Thank kids for use of turtles Lioness Club has successful Grand Bend Lioness Club held its meeting on Thur- sday May 28 at the Green Forest Hotel with President, Diane Bexton in charge. Members were pleased to be wearing their new club pins and name tags. Guests from Mt. Brydges and Strathroy attended. Speakers were Mr. C.E. Strange, from London Hutton House and Mr. Lorne Campbell, chairman of Grand Bend Community building project. Mr. Strange gave a slide presentation and an in- teresting talk about the sheltered work shop and life Glitd Bend Personals Annie Morenz 237.3317 skills programs for the handicapped being carried out at Hutton House. Mr. Campbell then discussed the work being done by the committee for the community building project and answered questions put forth by those attending. A successful Mini -Vegas night was held on May 23 in Dashwood. This was the fifth annual event of this kind put on by the Grand Bend Lioness Club. The door prize of a weekend trip to Toronto was donated by Coach House Travel and won by Cathy Hume. A delicious dinner was followed by various games including turtle races. Our thanks to the Grand Bend children who provided the turtles -- Vern Iskowskas, Tracey and Jason Soldan, and Robbie and Danny Oliver. An evening of fun was enjoyed by all. The Lioness Club will be providing a food booth at the Lambton Heritage Museum on July 26 and August 16 offering a barbecue beef dinner to those attending the special events at the museum. A craft show will be held on July 26, and a display of antique cars on August 16. We hope many will attend and enjoy the interesting shows. Conveners of the various club committees gave a short report of the years activities. The Lioness members attending the meeting approved club donations to Arc Industries, the Lion's home for the deaf in Nairn, the Grand Bend cubs, the Grand Bend swim program, and Hutton House. The evening concluded with the raffle draw donated by Marilyn Martens and won by Eveleen Jennison. A bike rodeo will be held on June 13, at Grand Bend Public School at 10 a.m. We hope to see many area children attending for some fun and a chance to win prizes for bike safety and skills. Church of God news About 55, attended a family night from Church of God, Friday evening. Adults and children played ball at the school grounds. This was followed by barbecued hot dogs and hamburgs, with cake for dessert. At the Sunday morning service at Church of God, Rev. John Campbell using scripture from Exodus:4 spoke of Moses' lack of eloquence, applying it to modern living when we make excuses. Rev. and Mrs. Campbell sang a duet, "Tell me more", with Betty ac- companying at the piano. United church news The Sunday School children of the United Church joined the congregation to celebrate their Sunday School an- niversary. On hand to entertain the children was Mr. Ev Smith and his puppet "Saltie", of London. Mr. Smith works with youth in alcohol and drug concerns and Toc Alpha. Mr. Smith told the children they were V.I.P.s, very important people, to their parents, family and God. Saltie and Mr. Smith provided an interesting dialogue on attending Sunday School. Saltie sang "Father we Thank Thee", and repeated Saltie's Golden Rule. Choir anthems this morning were "Holy, Holy, Holy," and "Immortal Invisible." The scripture reading was portions from Matthew 4 and 5, read by Mr. Smith. During the sermon topic period Rev. Moore and Mr. Smith, who were both delegates to London Con- ference held at Chatham last week, reviewed their high lights. Mr. Smith recalled that Rev. Bruce Ross, an old time fiddler, along with other musical members attending provided some great music. The rights of seeds growers was discussed, and the theme speaker, Rev. Robin Smith, who spoke on Christians of 1980's. Rev. Moore spoke of the fine young people who were ordained and will be serving United churches. Next Sunday, June 7, you are invited to join the U.C.W. at Grand Bend as they hold their annual Thankoffering Service at 11:15. Mrs. Shirley Luther, Hensall will be bringing the inspirational message. At Grand Bend United church, June 14, will be Flower Sunday. During the service, the Sunday School Graduation and Awards will take place. Following the service, a combined Sunday School and Congregational picnic will be held at the church, in the form of a pot luck lunch. Please bring sandwiches. Dessert and beverage will be supplied. United Church Conference News The 57th annual meeting of the London Conference of the United Church of Canada was held at the Park Street United Church in Chatham, Ontario on May 26 to 28, with more than 400 delegates attending. President Wm. A. Sayers opened the conference with a worship service "Remember your Baptism." The theme speaker for Conference was Dr. Robin Smith of Toronto. Dr. Smith is a director of the Vanier Institute for the Family a consultant to the World Council of Churches, and a director of Religious Education. Highlights of the Con- ference: Discussion on plant breeders' rights -sparked by the church's concern for the food production necessary to feed a hungry world. Ordination of 13 young men and women into the ministry of the United Church of Canada. The moderator, Dr. Lois Wilson took part in this service. Retirement of ten ministers from our Con- ference. Election of Rev. Lewis Snow of Charing Cross as President elect, his term to begin in June 1982. Presentation by Division of Communication con- cerning the impact of TV and technology on our society. The dealing with various resolutions affecting the life and witness of the church and Christian people. Discussion between the moderator, Dr. Lois Wilson and Benny Koada of South Africa, regarding the ex- pectance of the Third World Churches, and the way these churches see Christians of our world. Installation of this year's president, Rev. Don Mannell of Harrow, Ontario. Conference closed with Communion conducted by President Don Mannell. Grand Bend Golden Agers Grand Bend Golden Age members are reminded of their meeting Wednesday afternoon, June 3 at 1:30 p.m. at St. John's Parish hall. The names will be taken down for those going on the senior's one day bus trip on June 23. Bridge scores Six tables were in play at the duplicate bridge game last Wednesday night at St. John's Parish hall. Winners for north -south were - first - Jules Brabandere and Milton Webb, second - Betty Hoyles and Sue Baumgartner, east - west winners were -- first - Madelon and Harry Wilson, second - Hazel Gibson and Ted Hunt. Games are held each Wednesday evening. Vacationers or summer visitors are welcome to attend. Personals Mr. and Mrs. Duncan McVittie, Robin and Lawrence, Southampton, spent the weekend with Neva's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Johnson. Neva and Duncan were down to attend the Roger Quick Jamboree in the Stix, at,Thedford Arena grounds. Alvin and Clara Statton attended a fourth birthday party, Sunday, for their grandson, Eric Plantenga at his parents Debbie and Harry Plantenga in Huron Park. About 30 relatives and friends were in attendance. Those from this area who went on the bus trip to the ordination service of minister, of the London Conference of the United Church of Canada, Wed- nesday evening were Clara Hamilton, Marjorie Mason, Minnie and Lawrence Curts, Nora Webb, Gert and Lloyd Eagleson. The service was held at Park St United Church, Chatham. Fourteen were ordained, including five women and nine men. Visitors and supper guests, last Wednesday with Lorne and Loreen Devine, were Mr. and Mrs. Percy Willert, Mini -Vegas night Zurich, and Mrs. Elva Willert of Dashwood. Max Turnbull and his daughter Elva Lamport, of the Crediton area, visited Saturday with Mr. Art Baker and Mrs. Lillian Brown in Green Acres. Barry and Betty Hamilton, Ottawa, visited last weekend with his parents, Alex and Clara Hamilton. Rev. and Mrs. Harley Moore attended the 57th annual meeting of the London Conference of the United Church of Canada, held at Park St. United r ,- Church, Chatham. Rev. Moore was a delegate. Mr. and Mrs. Murray Cowan, Mount Forest, visited Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence Johnson. Bonnie, Janet and Lonnie Dugan, Sarnia, daughter, granddaughter and great- grandson of Clara and Alvin Statton, have moved to Huron Park.
