Shaw to Rangers Coates to Brantford Two locals drafted by junior 'A' Two products of the Exeter minor hockey system were drafted in the Ontario Hockey Association midget priority draft held Saturday at the North York Centennial arena. Dave Shaw was selected by the iiitchener Rangers In the second round and 16th pick overall and Tom Coates was chosen by the Brantford Rangers as their 14th choice. It is expected Shaw and Coates, who were both with the Stratford Junior "B" Cullitons during the 1980-81 season will report to their respective training camps in the fall. Bruce Shaw, father of Dave told the T -A Monday, "Kitchener has a good organization and I expect Dave will report for their first practice sessions." Shaw added, "Kitchener officials called Friday night before the draft to see if Dave would report 1f drafted and the answer was 'yes'. The elder Shaw, principal of Seaforth District High School said he had several options for his son to con- tinue his education. Dave who celebrated his 17th birthday on May`is in grade 11 at SHDHS. In conversation with the T- A Monday afternoon, Keith Coates said he expected Tom would report to Brantford. He added, "Tom talked to Brantford general manager Dave Draper and scout Dick Hunter and they indicated coach Bep Guidolin would be up this week to talk with us." Keith Coates continued, "It's also important to us that Tom continues with his education." The senior and junior Coates were among the more than 1,000 persons in at- tendance at the draft meeting. Shaw and Coates were valuable members of the 1980-81 Stratford Cullitons, a team that reached the OAA Junior 'B' finals before bowing to the Burlington Braves. A year earlier the two were part of the Exeter Kinsmen, OMAA provincial midget champions. T -A photo Holtzmann wins at golf For the second time in recent weeks two golfers tied for low gross score in the "A" flight of the regular men's night at the Ironwood golf course. Dave Holtzmann and Claude Daw recorded similar scores of 39, but, Holtzmann was declared the winner as the result of a countback. Daw recorded five pars for his 39 score and Holtzmann fashioned his 39 on a birdie and four pars. EXETER 236-2200 Greys score four fastball victories The Exeter Greys ladies fastball club is back in ac- tion and to date in the area league has a record of four victories and three defeats. The Greys victories came by scores of 4-2 over Mt. Brydges, 16-13 against Fullarton, 6-5 over Blanshard and 21-2 over Staffa. The Exeter club lost 14-13 to Mitchell. 11-8 to Union- dale and 11-9 to Usborne. In Sunday's 21-2 win over Staffa, the Greys scored 13 runs in the first inning. Lia Snell was the winning pitcher for Exeter and chipped in with a double and two singles. Bonnie Westlake and Julie Ann MacLean also had two hits apiece. In the loss to Usborne Valerie Minhinnick and Lia Snell were the Greys pitchers while Karen Brock was the winner for Usborne. Sheila Penhale and Karen Brock with two hits apiece led the Usborne batting at- tack. Elaine Gould and Pam Waiper were the top hitters for the Greys. Eight runs in the seventh inning allowed the Greys to score the 16-13 win over Fullarton. The big rally was powered by Valerie Minhinnick, doubles from the bats of Virginia Morgan and Lois Etherington and singles delivered by Bonnie Westlake, Elaine Gould, Donna Glanville, Pam Walper and Julie Ann MacLean. Valerie Minhin- nick was the winning pitcher. Bonnie Westlake was the Greys pitcher in the loss to Uniondale. Elaine Gould, Bonnie Westlake, Donna Glanville and Pam Walper scored for the Greys in their 4-2 win over Mt. Brydges and Lia Snell was the winning pitcher. In the opening game of the season, Mitchell scored a single a run in the bottom of the seventh to heat the Greys 14-13. Janice Brock and Lia Snell hit triples for the Greys and Valerie Minhinnick con- tributed a homer and double. Off to meet in the north Four athletes from South Huron District High School will be participating in the all -Ontario high school track and field meet in Thunder Bay. Steve Pearce, Dave Shaw, Jeff Rowe and Matt McClure finished in the top five in their respective classifications in Saturday's western division meet held in Kitchener to qualify for the trip north. The SHIMS quartette will be leaving London airport tonight, Wednesday at 11 p.m. on a charter flight to Thunder Bay. In Kitchener, Saturday, Steve Pearce who won the Huron -Perth senior boys javelin throw and was second in WOSSA placed third with a toss of 54.32 metres. In junior javelin, Dave Shaw who reigned as champion at Huron -Perth and WOSSA levels was second with a throw of 52.44 metres. Placing fifth in the same section was Jeff Rowe, also of South Huron with a heave of 50.62 metres. Matt McClure was second in the boys open 400 metre hurdles in 57.3 seconds, less than one second behind the winner. Pearce and McClure will be taking part in the senior boys events in Thunder Bay on Friday while Shaw and Rowe will get their op- portunity to show their stuff on Saturday. Others from South Huron who competed in the regionals at Kitchener were Susan McClure, Susan Birmingham, Lisa Rundle, Charlene Verbeek, Jackie Cottrell, Maja Gans and Derek Uippern. winner with a 32 and Brad Murray won the closest to the hole prize with a shot that missed the cup by 70 cen- timetres. In the "B" flight, Mark Cronyn and Don Heywood were the low gross winners with 40 and 43 respectively. Best in low net were Bill "Councillor" Mickleand Bob Forrest with 35's. Identical scores of 44 put John Morgan and Jim Gregus at the top of the low gross scores in "C" flight and the low net best scores were recorded by Bob Swartman at 32 and Norm Whiting with a 33. Marty Van Heeswyk with a 46 and Ed Little at 36 were the "D" flight gross and net winners, respectively.
