Spotlight
By ROSS HAUGH
This has been an excellent year for track and field
athletes at South Huron District High School.
In addition to great performances at the Huron -
Perth and WOSSA levels, 11 local high school stars
qualified for the western regional meet which was held
Saturday at Centennial Stadium in Kitchener.
Of this group. four finished in the top five in their
own categories and are of this week to Thunder Bay to
compete in the all -Ontario high school championship.
Steve Pearce, Dave Shaw, Jeff Rowe and Matt
McClure are boardinga charter plane at London airport
at 11 p.m. tonight. Wednesday for the trip to Thunder
Bay.
Pearce who finished third in the senior boys
javelin throw at the western division met in Kitchener
and McClure who was second in the open 400 metre
hurdles will compete in Thunder Bay on Friday.
Saturday action in the north will see Dave Shaw
and Jeff Rowe in action in the same event, the junior
boys javelin throw.
Shaw was second at Kitchener in the javelin and
Rowe was fifth in the same event.
Best of luck to the four South Huron athletes as
they attempt to bring home provincial honours to the
local school.
This area will be well represented when the
Special Olympics for handicapped athletes are held in
Ottawa, from July 16 to 19.
Three representatives from ARC Industries in
Dashwood have qualified to compete in Ottawa and
should make excellent showings.
A couple of weeks ago, Dorothy Dakins who is a
resident of the group home on John Street in .Exeter
won two red ribbons in a regional meet in Kincardine.
Dorothy because of limited training facilities in this
area had only a couple of practice swims before going
to Kincardine.
With the help of swimming coach Bonnie Baynham,
Dorothy's training program is going to accelerate and
she should do very well in the big show in Ottawa.
On the track and field level, atheletes from
Dashwood brought home 14 red ribbons from a district
meet in Palmerston and two qualified to go on to Ot-
tawa.
Gary Stebbins of Grand Bend won four events in
Palmerston and Brian Clarke of Thedford, brought
home two first place awards. Both are ARC Industries
employees.
Paul Runnalis who is the woodworking supervisor
at ARC will be accompanying the athletes to Ottawa
as a track and field coach representing region four.
We wish these three young people the best of luck
as they compete in the Special Olympics. It's great to
see these handicapped young people show so much
enthusiasm.
We were at ARC Monday and talked to these
three who were just bubbling over with enthusiasm
•over their trip to Ottawa.
Hockey in the news
Despite the current summery weather, hockey has
taken over the sports news locally with good news out
of the OHA midget priority draft held at the North
York arena in Toronto. Saturday.
Two local young people were selected and are ex-
pected to attend training camps of their respective
new clubs.
Dave Shaw was the second round and pick of the
OHA Junior "A" champion Kitchener Rangers and
Tom Coates was selected by the Brantford Alexanders
as their 14th selection.
Shaw had a call from the Kitchener organization
Friday night to find out if he would report if selected.
The answer was in the affirmative and the Rangers
picked the local youngster who celebrated his 17th
birthday last Monday, in the second round.
We talked to Keith Coates Monday and he in-
dicated that son Tom would report to Brantford train-
ing camp in the fall. He said Alexanders new coach
Bep Guidolin is expected to visit the Exeter area later
this week to talk to the Coates family.
The two drafted young players are currently in
grade 11 at South Huron District High School and both
fathers have stressed continuation of their schooling is
going to be a very important issue.
The Toronto Marlboros and London Knights also
showed interest in obtaining the services of Shaw.
