A peek around the corner
Don't look now, but, the Canadian football league
season is just around the corner and that corner is
close to being here.
While the regular season doesn't start until July 2,
pre -season games get underway tonignt, Wednesday
with the Saskatchewan Roughriders invading the Win-
nipeg Blue Bombers and tomorrow night the Toronto
Argonauts will be at home to the Ottawa Roughriders.
The big news in the CFL this year comes out of
Montreal where Nelson Skalbania purchased the
Alouettes and quickly loosened the rubber band
around his bundle of money.
Skalbania wasn't fooling and went on a raid of es-
tablished stars south of the border. He made the
biggest rush at signing name players since Harry
Sonshine did the same thing for the Toronto Argonauts
some 26 years ago.
The big name in Montreal is quarterback Vince
Ferragamo who is reported to have signed a four year
contract for some $400,000 per annum. With his
signature on the dotted line Ferragamo insisted the
Alouettes also bring in some established receivers to
hang onto his passes.
It didn't take Skalbania long to latch on to James
Scott of the Chicago Bears and Billy "White Shoes"
Johnson from the Houston Oilers.
While the Alouettes will certainly be favorites to
clean up in the east this year and give some opposition
to the strong defending Grey Cup champion Edmonton
Eskimos. just remember, it's tough to buy a cham-
pionship team.
The Argos have tried many times to buy a winner
and it just didn't work. The first time was in 1955 long
before the saga of free agents when the Argos struck
the New York Giants and Detroit Lions.
Harry Sonshine then at the helm of the Toronto
treasure brought in Billy Shipp and Bill Albright of
New York and Tom Dublinski, Gil Mains and Jim Mar-
tin from the Detroit Lions.
We would guess that Skalbania's generosity will be
good for the overall Canadian football scene. With the
new interlocking schedule, the Montreal team will be
seen regularly in all stadiums and attendance should
rise considerably.
While the Montreal club is sure to be improved,
the other eastern teams also appear to be optimistic
about fielding much better teams.
In Hamilton the return of quarterback Tom
Clements will help along with former Schneley Award
winning running back David Green and wide receiver
Keith Baker. The latter pair carne from the Als as
compensation for the signing of Ferragamo He was on
the Hamilton negotiation list.
The most optimism in the Argo camp stems from
the signing of veteran quarterback Condredge
Holoway and the acquisition of running back Cedric
Minter from Boise State and Marcellus Greene from
Arizona State.
The first exhibition outing for the Alouettes will be
Sunday, June 7 when they play host to Hamilton.
The regular CFL season opens on Thursday, July 2
with the Saskatchewan Rough Riders travelling to
Toronto to meet the Argos. Two days later the
Alouettes will be in British Columbia for their league
opener.
Looking away ahead the 1981 Grey Cup will be
played in Montreal on Sunday, November 22. How
about a long range prediction? Montreal versus Ed-
monton.
The National football league south of the border
doesn't start it's regular schedule until September 6.
The Detroit Lions are at home that day to the San
Francisco Giants.
Craig run
Received a note this week from Lyle McLeod of
Ailsa Craig telling us about the annual road run set for
his village on Saturday. July 18.
The race as in the past three years will go a dis-
tance of 10 kilometres. Miss Dominion of Canada will
be on hand to start the race at 9 a.m.
In keeping with the year of the handicapped a
special invitation is being made to all wheelchair or
handicapped runners.
Stewarts Seeds will be donating a sports bag to the
first 200 runners to preregister.

Tigers score double wins
The Dashwood Tigers
after an opening season loss
in the Great Lakes baseball
league came roaring back on
the weekend with decisive
victories over the Strathroy
juniors.
In Dashwood Friday night,
the Tigers blanked Strathroy
5-0 and Sunday they chalked
up a 20-1 romp in Strathroy.
The Tigers swing back into
action Friday night on their
home field when they play
host to Byron at 8 p.m. and a
London junior team will be in
Dashwood Tuesday night for
an 8:30 contest.
Friday night, lefthander
John Bruijns was in mid-
season form as he held the
Strathroy youngsters to only
one hit, a single in the fifth
inning by Bob Barnes.
On the way to his shutout
win, Bruijns recorded a total
of 18 strikeouts. The other
nine Dashwood putouts came
in the infield.
The first Tiger scores
came in the bottom of the
sixth when Barry Baynham
walked and scored on Jim
Guenther's double. Guenther
was able to cross the plate on
a couple of Strathroy errors
allowing Mike Desjardine
and Pete Wuerth to reach the
base paths.
In the Dashwood seventh,
Barry Baynham singled and
scored on Jim Guenther's
long home run blast. John
Bruijns followed with a
single and came scampering
home on a double from the
bat of Jim Dietrich.
The only other Tiger hit
was a fifth inning double
delivered by Bob Hoffman.
In Sunday's easy 20-2 win
the Tigers were helped by 14
walks given up by the
Strathroy pitching staff.
The Tigers opened with
five runs in their first turn at
the plate and scored
frequently thereafter with
four run outbursts in the
fourth and sixth innings and
a half dozen more scores in
the seventh and final inning.
Singles by Luc Gagnon,
Barry Baynham and Bob
Hoffman powered the first
inning rally while Hoffman's
two base blow in the third
sent another run home.
In the fourth four runs
were chalked up on only one
hit, a double by Bob Hoffman
his third straight hit.
Rob Dickey's single was
the only safety in the sixth
while Rob Dickey and Keven
Bern doubled in the seventh
and Fred Robinson added a
single.
Dan Heywood was the
starting and winning pitcher
for Dashwood holding the
opposition to only two runs
and three hits. He chalked up
11 strikeouts.

A good laugh
On a recent Sports Call shown on CFPL radio Gary
Alan Price asked. "What important happening took
place on May 23. 1935?"
One caller and he appeared to be serious said,
"Jesse Owens won the Indianapolis 500 car race."
Now that would take some speed as Owens was an
Olympic track and field star.
The answer was. "Babe Ruth hit the last of his
three major league home runs."
