Merrywood Farms high
on harness racers list
Mr. Mcllroy was one of
the pioneer harness horse
enthusiasts in Western On-
tario and the Merrywood
Farm name became syn-
onymous with the sport
throughout Canada and the
United States.
The first horse he owned
was Oakhurst Ginnie
purchased from Jack
Morrissey in the early
1940's. Morrissey said this
week, "She was a good brood
mare with about 15 colts and
they all got to the races."
The first horses to actually
race for Mcllroy were Silver
Peter and Patricia Gratton.
They raced in Western On-
tario included Exeter and
Strathroy.
Mr. Mcllroy was a charter
member of the Ontario
Harness Horse Association
and a director from 1964 to
1968.
The racing operation is
now handled by trainer -
driver Don Larkin who has
been with the Mcllroy's
since 1960. Mr. and Mrs.
Larkin and two children live
on Merrywood Farm south
of Grand Bend.
There are about 20 horses
in the stables now with five
new foals due very shortly.
Racing is confined to the
Jockey Club circuit at
Greenwood and Mohawk.

A WINNER — Eric Mcllroy dressed as a clown congratulates one of the bathing beauty
contest winners crowned at Grand Bend. A contest was held on each major holiday
weekend during the late 1950's and early 1960's. Mr. Mcllroy often dressed in costume to
take port in the gala parades.
