Canadians do not have to
line up to buy food.
All kinds of food is
available. Yet complaints
are constantly heard about
the high cost of food. At a
social gather,ing last week,
six of the seven people in a
cornerconverstioncursed and
comp.ained about food
prices.
Whether we realize it in
Canada or not. we are the
best -fed nation in the world
and we get our food at the
lowest prices of any other
nation in the world. We do
not have to line up for it. We
do not have to wait for
another nation's largesse to
supply us with food.
Our farmers are the most
proficient in the world. In
fact. they are too proficient
for their own good. They can
produce too much for this
nation. That is obvious by
the fact that many farmers
are forced to limit produc
tion through marketing
hoards which have instituted
supply management.
Canadians. if that
weekend conversation is an
indication. should be happy
to pay the going prices.
The entire world is in a
more precarious food supply
situation than at any time
since the grain shortages of
the mid-70s. The United
Nations Food and
Agriculture Association
(FAO recently completed a
survey around the world and

tages in many nations has
been reported.
Estimates vary but more
than a million people could
starve to death this year of
1981. Major food aid
programs are already un-
derway in some African
regions.
China's cereal harvest last
season was far short of pro-
jections. Russia, is spite of
many five-year plans, con-
tinues to be unable to grow
enough grain to supply the
people. The world begins
this harvest season with vir-
tually no cushion against
major crop shortfalls this
year. The harvests around
the world this year will be
crucial.
Because of this precarious
position. more farmers will
plant more grain. They know
of the shortages. Rising
prices — it's the old law of
supply and demand — will
encourage larger plantings.
But rising prices adversely
affect the Third World
nations which are forced to
import food supplies and pay
more for those supplies.
Expect to see heart-
rending pictures in the mass
media next fall. pictures of
starving children with hands
held out pleading for food.
Expect to hear reports of
terrible famines in some
north African and West
African countries and acute
food shortages in the Asian
countries which cannot feed
themselves. Think of those

many millions of people in
many nations aound the
world who go to bed
hungry. perhaps not stray-
ing but certainly hungry,
every night of the week,
month after month.
Because now that the em-
bargo on grain to Russia has
been lifted. that country will
be shopping the world right
along with China buying as
much grain as is available.
World grain stocks are low
enough now, the lowest in six
or seven years. If any major
food producing area around
the globe has a bad harvest,
the whole picture will
become even more drastic.
Any crop failure in either
Canada or the United States
will become disastrous.
So. think of those things
after you have eaten a good
meal this summer and next
winter. Think of those star-
ing people all over the world
when you loosen your belt a
notch because you are over-
fed and overweight.
Most important, think of
those people when you com-
plain so bitterly about rising
food prices in Canada this
year. Do not lay the blame
on the farmer who toiled in
his fields. Do not suggest
that all marketing boards,
especially those with supply
management. should be
scrapped so the price of food
will go down.
With food shortages
around the globe, the price
of food in Canada cannot go
any place else but up.
Just be thankful to the
farmers and the good Lord
who placed you in such a
wonderful country where
food is plentiful and relative-
ly cheap.
Remember, Canadians
spend less of their dis-
posable income dollar on
food than any other nation in
the world because Canada
has hard-working,
progressive farmers who
produce the best food in the
world to fill your belly.

"Nobody could keep up

Sound familiar? It's not
uncommon for farmers to
develop chronic (and often
severe) back ailments.
Often, it is the fellow who
could outwork everyone else
that ends up crippled.
Great strength and
stamina may allow an in-
dividual to get away with
bad lifting techniques for
many years. However, even
the strongest among us are
likely to develop back
problems if we punish
ourselves over an extended
period.
A lot of pressure is put on
the lumbar spine when a
person bends the back in-
stead of the knees when
lifting. The poor mechanical
position of lifting with a bent
back can produce a force of

Blasts report on .boards
A recent report con-
demning marketing boards
is grossly distorted and
based on shoddy analysis,
Ralph Barrie, President,
Ontario Federation of
Agriculture (OFA) said
today.
The studies prepared for
the Economic Council of
Canada (ECC) charge
farmers producing eggs,
chickens and milk are
making excess profits. The
OFA has carefully reviewed
these studies and found them
wanting in scope, ob-
jectivity, and quality.
Barrie saiu the studies
should never have been
made public. "They are
really just the opinions of the
authors. The Economic
Council itself recognizes
there are problems with the
studies and has sent them
back for 'extensive
revisions'."
Some of the charges, said
Barrie, are based on a
comparison of Canadian
prices with those charged by
countries dumping their
surpluses on the world
market. "This is the same as
saying that if world labour
rates averaged $1.00 an hour,
and if Canadians earned an
average of $7.00 Canadians
workers are ripping us off. In
terms of income, Canadians
enjoy one of the cheapest
sources of food in the world.
That's fact, not opinion."
Barrie said these studies
malign one of the most
productive sectors of the
Canadian economy. These
allegations seriously
damage, the reputation and
integrity of farmers, he said,
and farmers should consider
taking legal action to stop
these unfounded attacks.
as much as 700 kilograms on
the spinal discs when lifting
only 50 kilograms. This often
causes a ruptured disc. Such
injuries can be permanent,
and could force retirement
from farming.
Use of proper procedures
and body position when
lifting will reduce the risk of
injury -
(1) Get a good footing.
Remove obstacles and
debris that could cause a.
fall. Position the feet slightly
apart for balance, with one
foot ahead of the other.
(2) Bend your knees'. Get
close to the object to be
lifted. Keep your back
straight and your chin pulled
in so that your head neck and
back are as straight as
possible.
(3) Get a good grip.
Whenever possible, grasp
the object with a full grip
instead of your fingertips; it
is less likely to slip and fall.
Tilt boxes and get one hand
under them. Place the other
hand diagonally opposite.
This principle of gripping
diagonally also applies when
lifting sacks of grain and
fertilizer.
(4) Lift with your leg
muscles. Lift smoothly, not
with a jerk. Keep your back
straight and the load close to
your body. When your knees
are straight, bring your back
leg forward to support the
weight. Walk carefully.
(5) Use mechanical aids
(hoods, straps or pulleys) to
lift a heavy load from the
floor. These devices should
also be used to lift light loads
that obstruct vision.
(6) Reverse the recom-
mended lifting procedures to
set an object down. Don't try
to lift very heavy loads
without help. In extreme
cases, muscles alone are not
sufficient to lift a load, and
must be applied through
leverage. Proper selection of
lever and fulcrum can made
many heavy lifting jobs
easy. Hydraulic jacks may
be required. Get adequate
help in terms of people and
or equipment. Don't be laid
up for a week or a lifetime
with a bad back because you
tried to save a few minutes of
time.
When carrying or lifting,
keep the load as near the
centre line of your body's
centre of gravity as possible.
This reduces balancing
effort and unnecessary
muscle work.
While mechanization has
eliminated much of the
drudgery traditionally
associated with farm work, a
"strong back" is still a
valuable asset. Don't ruin
your back and end your
farming career early
through careless lifting
methods.

Federal Agriculture
Minister Eugene Whelan has
announced that cattle and
sheep will not be allowed
into Canada from continen-
tal Europe this year because
of recent foot and mouth
outbreaks in Italy, France
and Austria.
Foot and mouth is a highly
contagious livestock dis-
ease. Canada has been free
of the disease except for one
outbreak in 1952 and any in-
troduction into this country
could seriously affect
Canada's ability to export
Canadian livestock.
"The incidence of foot and
mouth disease in France is a
particular concern to the
Canadian livestock industry
because European livestock
are gathered at the Brest,
France quarantine station
before they are brought by
boat to Canada," Mr.
Whelan said
The current outbreak in
France has spread to the
island of Jersey in the
English Channel and the Isle
of Wight (England).
In addition. the outbreaks
in Austria and Italy have oc-
curred in areas where cattle
have been selected in the
1
past for export to Canada.
"We are making this an-
nouncement now to advise
potential Canadian livestock
buyers before they go to
Europe to select animals."
Mr. Whelan said.
"It is also important
because if they visit Europe
at this time there is a danger
that they could come in con-
tact with the disease and br-
ing the virus back to Canada
on their clothing."
Agriculture Canada of-
ficials in Eutope will be
carefully monitoring the
situation there on a daily
basis for the remainder of
the year to assess whether
importations will be resum-
ed in 1982-83.
