Deane & Laughton Solicitors for the executors, Exeter, Ontario 15:16:17c Cost over $50,000 Discuss water main The cost of replacing a 1200 -foot water main on Gidley Street has been es- timated at about $51,512 by PUC manager Hugh Davis. Davis told the com- mission's meeting, Tuesday, that if it is decided to go ahead with the project, PUC workers could not begin the work before the end of July. The hydl'o budget included a scheduled rebuilding of hydro lines along Gidley between Senior and Andrew Streets. This will be done In the first three weeks of July. Any work on the water mains would have to be done after the hydro work. Davis said he calculated the water main job to in- clude five men working for four weeks: -Some temporary - help would have to be hired he said, as the PUC has only four full-time men to work on the project. With the work involved, and theunbudgeted costs, David recommended the job be planned for next year. He said there was no potential increases in revenue to offset the costs of the replacement project. Davis estimated the costs of the water main break on Gidley Street, March 20, to be about $1,000. Commissioner Chan Livingstone said the point of the costing was to have the work planned, if it was decided to undertake the project this year. Livingstone pointed out the cost was equivalent to 51 potential breaks. Davis said the work could be financed as the major project for 1982. The'commission will dis- cuss the situation further. The commission discussed a requested extension of water service to a planned addition to the Huron Colli- sion building on Rosemount Street. The building is currently serviced off an extension STEALS FROM THE RICH - Kirkton provided entertainme '81 in Grand Bend Thursday very popular. The alternatives, Davis said, were to allow a further extension, which may not supply adequate water to the new building, or to build a water main down Rosemount street. Any new water main ex- tension would be made at the request of the users, and handled under local im- provement procedures. The PUC would install the watermain, and the town council would be responsible for collecting the costs from those serviced. - One of - the - problems in- volved is that users are assessed on the basis of fron- tage. The main would in- crease fire protection to the rear of the Kongskilde plant, but the plant has flankage, not usually assessed, along the proposed main. Davis said the existing PUC, when the original ex- tension was granted, said any further extension would require a water main to be installed. • The commission recommended Davis contact the parties involved to gather more information, and point out the benefits of installing a new water main. The commission accepted a proposal from town coun- cil to invite submissions from local insurance agents. Several of the town's policies are held jointly with the PUC :The PUC's insurance need's would be reviewed by the insurance company's surveying of buildings and equipment, in conjunction of with those of the town. In other business: Davis said costs for tree trimming were up this year. He said the man-hours were up 42 percent over hours two years ago, but with the hir- ing of two part time workers, costs were not up proportionately. Davis said some areas needed more trimming this year than normal. Primary hydro conductor will be replaced along Huron Street West, between William and Market Streets. The power will be off for a short time on the morning of Sunday, May 10. A short section of secon- dary conductor is planned to be replaced along Marlborough Street to give ,better service to houses con- verting to electric heat. It was decided to con- solidate the PUC's bank ac- counts into a single bank. This in effect will move the water accounts to the Bank of Montreal to join the hydro accounts. Fire school in Clinton Firemen from every brigade in Huron will be represented at the reginal fire training school schedul- ed for May 11-15 in Clinton. Five instructors from the Ontario Fire College at Gravenhurst will be involved in the program, along with a representative from the On- tario Fire Marshal's office. Gerry Stunstrum, London; area •fire servicesadvisor, is in charge of the program. Between 50 and 60 firemen have registered for the course to date.
