FARMER OF THE WEEK
Tony Mennen and 1980 potatoes
Onions already planted,
about one week early
One of the Grand Bend
area's youngest market gar-
deners will be planting the
first of his 1981 potato crop
this week.
Tony Mennen who
celebrated his 26th birthday
on April 23 is renting 125
acres from his mother. The
farm is located on the east
side of Highway 21 about
four miles south of Grand
Bend.
It is the secondyearfor his
own farming operation since
the death of his father, the
late Peter Mennen.
Six acres of onions were
planted the day before
Mennen clebrated his birth.
day. Ile says this is about a
week earlier than normal.
An additional 25 acres of
onions will be planted along
with four acres of early
potatoes this week and
another 50 acres through
mid to the end of May.
The first potatoes are ex-
pected to be harvested about
August 15.
While most of the potatoes
which are of the Superior,
Katadin and Sebago
varieties are sold wholesale
quite a number of sales are
made at the Mermen door.
Tony Mennen commented
"We sell only in 75 pound
lots to our small customers.
-It's not worth the time in
bagging in smaller
qun•atities A lot of our
wholesale sales are in bulk.
This saves a lot in labour."
Very few onions are sold
to individuals. Mennen add-
ed, "People don't like to get
onions in large quantities.
They don't use as many as
they do potatoes."
While Mennen has a good
quantity of the 1980 potato
crop still in his storage
sheds, the last of the onions
were sold last week.
When this year's onions
crop is completed Mennen
expects one storage barn of
40 by 100 feet capacity filled
to the roof.
Talking 'about potato
prices. Mennen said, "We
haven't had good prices
since 1974 There are a lot of
potatoes coming in from
Prince Edward Island and
that's what keeps our prices
down. Ontario produces only
40 percent of what the
province uses.
Onion prices were as high
as $9 per bag last fall. They
dropped as low as $6, but•
levelled back to the $7.50 - $8
range.
The potato seed is treated
with insecticides before
planting so spraying is usual-
ly limited to mid-August for
blight and insects.
The spraying of the onion
crop is a different story ac-
cording to Mennen. Ile said,
"Spraying onions is a con-
tinuing thing. The maggot
flies eat like crazy. They •
peak three times a year for
two weeks and we are forced
to spray every four days."
Mennen is a valuable
member of the Grand fiend
Colonials soccer team. After
winning the Ausable league
championship two years in
succession. the Colonials
have moved up to the third
division of the London and
district soccer league.
