Caven women hear nurse from India
The monthly meeting of
the Gordon Auxiliary was
held April 20 at Caven
Presbyterian Church. The
guest speaker was Joan
Allen and she spoke on India.
Joan served as a nurse for
eight months in Jesu
Ashram a mission hospital
started by Brother Bob
Mittelholtz, a Jesuit priest,
originally from Zurich.
She showed sliders of the
Jesu Ashram and explained
that this hospital was for the
poor. It was located in the
north eastern part of India.
Everything was primitive by
out standards however, the
Christian atmosphere was
over -whelming and everyone
would help everyone else.
There was also Sister

Yugoslavia and seemed to be

Homemakers pick
slate of officers
Betty Cardno, co-founder
and first board chairman of
the Town and Country
Homemakers has stepped
down as chief officer. New
officers were elected at the
first meeting of the new
board of directors held at
Wingham, April 22.
Bev Brown of Bluevale is
the new chairman of the
board. Mrs. Gwyn Whilsmith
of St. Joseph's and Rev.
Terry Trites of Bluevale are
vice-chairmen, and Mrs.
Lois Hodgert is secretary.
Committee chairman are:
Fundraising, Mrs. Gwyn
Whilsmith; Policy, by-laws
and personnel, Paul Steckle;
Program and evaluation,
Rev. Trites; Annual
meeting, Mrs. Ruth Linton;
and Public relations, Mrs.
Pauline Atton and Mrs.
Grace Fraser.
The board continues to be
concerned about . the can-
cellation of the homemaking
course by Canada Man-
power. "Without a course to
train more homemakers this
year, it will be difficult to
have the required number of
homemakers we will need
for chronic home care,"
Jean Young, Executive
Director, explained. "We are
hopeful that women who are
interested in taking this
course will contact their
local Manpower Office or
write to Murray Cardiff,
M.P. in Ottawa, to express
their concern."

ministration. She has also
dedicated her life to God's
work sharing and caring for
others.
Jesu Ashram besides
being a hospital, has a T.B.
clinic, leprosy clinic and a
school. The school has
children living there spon-
sored by some Canadians. It
is Christian based, mostly
Catholic. However,
Christianity is not stressed
due to the fact that there are
a lot of Hindu influences.
They are also teaching and
developing agriculture by
teaching irrigation and pig
farming.
She showed slides also on
other Jesuit mission places,
on being on the Island of
Basati which is operated by
nuns. The schools are well
organized and are
developing the children to
reach out for something
better.

Group decides
on membership
On Thursday, April 16,
Huron County Women Today
held a pot luck supper
followed by a business
meeting, at Central Huron
Secondary School in Cllnton.
Helene Cameron chaired
the business portion of the
meeting and gave details of a
conference to be held August
28 and 29 which Conestoga
College have agreed to co-
sponsor. Those present made
suggestions to be included in
the final plans for the con-
ference.
The discussion then turned
to the issue of grants and
whether or not Women
Today should become a more
formal organization in order
to apply for grant money. It
was decided to postpone
formalization and raise
money through a modest
$5.00 membership fee in-
stead, said fees to be used to
cover costs of mailing,
guests speakers and in-
cidentals. A small charge
may, on occasion, be made
"at the door" in the event
that a particular guest
speaker be too costly for the
group.
The next meeting was set
for June 15, 7:30 p.m.
(location to be announced
later) and the purpose will
be threefold: a) to report on
the "Rural Connection"
conference at U.W.O. in
early May; b) to report ons
other women's organizations
in and around Huron County
that provide women -to -
woman support; c) to
generate interest and en-
thusiasm for the conference
in August.
Anyone having questions
or interested in attending
this next meeting should call

Joan brought souvenirs
from India, carvings and
weavings and hand sewn
articles. She demonstrated
how a sari is put on and
described the material used
as silk or cotton. She ex-
plained how the different
fads affect how you wear
them, whether you wear
cotton tops with round necks
or v -necks, pleated at the
side or at the front of the
sari, etc.
She is originally from
Winchelsea and now resides
in London, where she is a
nurse at Victoria Hospital.
It was a very interesting
evening and everyone en-
joyed the lunch of India
dishes.
