TERMS CASH AUCTIONEER Richard Lobb Exeter girl has entry Original fashions in show customers order the items home in Exeter, or at the custom made. They can be "Just For You" boutique on purchased at Carolyn's 81 Crescent in Grand Bend. by Mary Alderson modelled in the show. They E were judged on originality and mass producability. Manufacturers were present at the showing to look over the designs and perhaps make arrangements to buy some of them. The show was held at the Skyline Hotel in Toronto March 31. Carolyn is finishing the se- cond year of the three year fashion design program. Included in the studies are such courses as power sew- ing methods, industrial sew- ing methods, textile sciences, sketching, pattern grading, and mass production. "I enjoy it very much," Carolyn says. A different part of clothing is studied each semester, Carolyn explains. They have already learned about bodices, skirts, sleeves and pants. For each project the students have to come up with eight designs. Then they select one and make it An xeter girl was one of several Fanshawe College students whose original creations were modelled in a Toronto fashion show recently. Carolyn Perry of Edward Street is a second year fashion design student. One of her works was among eight finalists from Fanshawe College in the "Designers of Tomorrow Fashion Show." Carolyn's entry was a fall co-ordinate. She designed a dress and created it out of a cream coloured sweater knit fabric. The dress has raglan sleeves, with an attached scarf. Verticle hand smock- ing is featured on the front and back, as well as the sleeves. To wear over the dress, Carolyn fashioned a "tab - bard". She describes a tab - bard as .a cross between a poncho, a cape and a coat. The sides are left open, and tacked under the arm. A belt fits underneath the tabbord, fastening the front, while leaving back open. Carolyn chose a purple plaid wool for the tabbard. It is pleated, and the bottom is fringed. The seven colleges across Ontario where fashion design is taught were invited to send entries to the fashion show,' which was sponsored by the Needle Trades Management Association. This was the first time the event has been staged, but it is hoped to become an an- nual show. Colleges were invited to send a number of garments in proportion to the number of students taking the course. Ryerson dominated the entries, having the largest school of fashion design. There were 15 garments selected from the 60 students at Fanshawe College. These 15 were reduced to only eight before the fashion " show. Carolyn was one of the eight finalists. The outfits had to be worn by professional models. For- tunately, Carolyn's creation also fits her. A total of 158 outfits were up. Creating the designs can sometimes be frustrating, Carolyn says. She will plan and sketch an outfit, and then not be able to find the fabric she had intended to use. Next in her course, Carolyn says she will be working with leather and tailoring. The course is set up as a co-operative program. Students are expected to work in the design industry during their breaks. Carolyn has created her own work as part of the co-operative program. Carolyn designs and makes her own line of lingerie -- "Just For You". She creates original peignoir sets, negligees, ted- dys, camisoles and nighties. Many of Carolyn's DRESS AND TABBARD — Carolyn Perry models her original creationwhichwas entered in a Toronto fashion show recently. The hand smocked cream sweater knit dress is worn with a purple plaid tabbard. At left is a sketch Carolyn drew of her outfit as part of her fashion design course at Fanshawe College.
