Annette Denomme gathering eggs
Top egg producer
A Zurich area young man
who started into the farming
business with the purchase
of a small farm in 1967 is
now one of the top egg
producers in South Huron.
Bernie Denomme, who
now operates 425 acres,
along Highway 21 about a
mile north of St. Joseph
worked as a plumber for
Stade and Weido of Zurich
Until he decided to purchase
50 acres of land 14 years ago.
The first barn was built in
the first year to accom-
modate 5,000 laying hens and
an addition was put on two
years later for another 5,500
layers.
Two years ago. Denomme
constructed a barn for day-
old chicks and now raises
enough pullets for his own
needs as well as for another
area egg producer, Ron
Overholt. The pullet barn
can handle 16,800 birds.
Denomme's basic quota
from the Ontario Egg
Producers Marketing Board
was 10,500. He added,
"These quotas are changed
quite often with cutbacks.
Also quotas may be leased
for 12.50 per bird and I was
also able to buy another 1,-
000. My basic quota is now
about 13,800."
The baby chicks of the
Hyline and H and N variety
are purchased" from
McKinle, ljtCheries of
Zurich When a day old.
The St. Joseph farmer said
quota Controls are good for
the egg producer.
He added. "The board sets
the prices and they are bas-
ed 'on our costs with a fair
profit base. They are good
right now."
Eggs are picked up twice
weekly at the Denomme
farm with half going to
Maple Leaf Egg in Toronto
and the balance to Maple
Lynn Farms in Strathroy.
In an attempt to cut the
current surplus, Denomme
said the egg board is paying
some producers to stay out
of the business for a short
time.
He continued, "This
program allows a farmer to
get rid of his older hens a lit-
tle earlier and he is paid for
the profit he would have nor-
mally made. I emptied out
two years ago."
The average time of
production for a flock of lay-
ing hens is about 13 months.
Denomme said he has not
tried the moulting method to
allow a flock to produce a se-
cond year. but. knows of one
product that has been
successful with the moulting
process.
Denomme produces all of
the feed required by his
flocks and has his own mill
to process the fded. He add-
ed, "Building my own mill is
the best thing I have ever
done. None of the feed ever
leaves the farm. One saving
is in trucking which is 14
cents per bushel for Corn."
The present flock of
Denomme layers went into
the cages which house two
birds each on June 28 and
have produced at an average
of 74-75 percent with a peak
at abouf 90 percent.
Denomme added, "For well
over six months they produc-
ed at 85 percent."
• Egg board employees visit
the Denomme farm and all
producers every two months
and keep a very close count
on the number of birds in
production.
Denomme's ,wife Annette
and three sons, Michael,
Kevin and Danny are in
charge of gathering the
eggs. Michael and Kevin are
students at South Huron
District High School while
Danny attends' Ecole St.
Marie Separate School at $t.
Joseph
The eggs are gathered
once a day during the fall
and winter and twice a day
during the warmer summer
months.
