Special speaker on 'Cancer hygiene dor the farmer and you/
By MRS. E. SUMMERS
Dr. Joseph E. Cummins a
genetic scientist from the
Plant Sciences Dept. of
U.W.O: was the guest
speaker at the Lucan Public
School on April 9. This
meeting was sponsored by
the Lucan Biddulph branch
of the Canadian Cancer
Society.
Dr. Cummins subject was
"Cancer Hygiene — How It
effects the farmer and you".
This was a timely theme
with spring seeding about
the start, dealing with
pesticides and fertilizers and
how they effect the health of
the public and the people
who use them. We know
what causes cancer, but we
don't know how to cure it
yet, said the speaker,
hopefully this disease won't
be with us in 50-100 years
from now.
Environment can be a
cause, as rectal and colon
cancer has been closely
associated with
overchlorinated water.
Through the Ames Test we
learn that there are a
number of chemicals that
contain carcinogens, (agents
that cuase cancer) In
humans and animals.
What is cancer hygiene?
Said Dr. Cummins, it is
preventing Cancer by
avoiding carcinogens,
"knowing, thinking and do-
ing" for example knowing
what they are, thinking what
to do about it, and doing It.
Pesticides and fertilizers
may contain carcinogens. It
has been discovered that
farm families have a greater
incidence of bone cancer and
birth defects. When using
pesticides and fertilizers be
aware, use respirators and
check your outer clothing at
the the barn or in the base-
ment.
Dr. Cummins fielded a
number of questions from
the floor and continued to
talk to people over
refreshments.

Following a sing -sang with
Mrs. Elwyn Bryan at the
piano, the bride elect was
taken to a table laden with
packages. Assisting Nancy
to open her gifts were her
sisters, Susan and Cathy and
her sister-in-law, Debbie

play, Nancy thanked

devotional was taken from
Luke 24: 6-7. Each girl took
part in a play "Why is
Easter Happy"? This
depicted a teenager not

School or church training
who wondered why people
were so excited at Easter.
She thought, as she came in

Her friend finally tells her
the Easter story of Jesus'
resurrection, which makes
her realize that this is what
Easter is all about, and the
reason for people being so
happy at Easter time.
Final plans were made for
the Sunrise Service on
Easter morning at 7 p.m.
with a breakfast following.
At the St. Thomas
Anglican Church Rev. Greg
Smith was the celebrant of
Holy Communion and con-
ducted the service of the
Liturgy of the Palms,
assisted by Miss Marion
Herbert. The Epistle of the
day was read by Mrs.
Clarence Lewis. It being
Palm Sunday Rev. Smith's
message was on 'Jesus
Christ's entering the
Heavenly Sanctuary. Palm
branches decorated the
church and palm crosses
were distributed to all.
In the children's story the
Rector used a picture of a
lamb as a symbol. After tell-
ing them a story of slavery,
they were to think of
themselves as a lamb of
God. Pictures of lambs were
hung on the Jessie tree. Mrs.
Beatson's class then sang
"My sins are gone".
Flowers from the funeral of
the late Mrs. (Sarah) Lewis
Egan were placed in the
church in loving memory by
her family.

Church news
At the United Church the
Rev. Elwood Morden con-
ducted the Palm Sunday ser-
vice. The lastDialoguein the
series "Lenten Zoo" was
presented by the minister
and Mrs. Morden. This dealt
with the "Donkey —
Proclamation and Response.
It was brought to attention
that Mary rode a donkey to
Bethlehem where Jesus was
born, and a donkey probably
carried Mary and the Infant
Jesus when they fled from
Herod. Saying God reveals
Himself in strange ways,
the story of Baalam's ass
was told, and how God
speaks through people.
In his sermon taken from
Matthew 21-10-11 and en-
titled "Who is this King?"
Rev. Morden said "Who was
this Man who 2000 years ago
performed miracles and
raised people from the dead.
Who was this Man who came
riding into the City of
Jerusalem on a donkey, yet
there was something about
this Man with His gentle
face. that prompted people
to strew Palm Branches
before Him, and to cast their
outer garments in His path.
In the year of our Lord 1981
He is almost asunknownto-
day as He was on that day
2000 years ago. We should
make up our minds as to who
'He is, Remember the hum-
ble way He entered
Jerusalem, yet there was
real dignity and presence in
His bearing. Jesus was not
diminished by riding an ass,
but the donkey was given
new status. The story of
Palm Sunday is simple, give
Christ an entrance into your
life. then you will know Him
as the Prophet Jesus, The
King of Kings, and the Lord
of Lords.
Flowers were placed in
the church in loving memory
of the late Mrs. Lewis Egan
by her family. The tickets
are going fast for the Easter
Sunrise service and
breakfast. This is a project
of the Youth Groups.
