Spring Discounts On Grain A NEW OCCUPATION — Jean and Tom McCullough of Concession 5 in Hay township are the newest sheep breeders in the area. They are shown with two of their spring Suffolk Iambs. T -A photo Suffolk breeding stock off to overseas flocks One of the newest sheep producers in the southern part of Huron county is ex- pecting to participate in the export trade of breeding stock for the second time this summer. Tom McCullough sent 15 registered Suffolk ewes to Brazil in September of 1980 and hopes to increase this number along with some rams later this year. McCullough. an accoun- tant by trade and his wife Jean purchased 50 acres of land at part of Lot 14, Concession 5 in Hay township. near the Hay swamp in 1973. Within the next three years, the couple, who are natives of Ireland. built a house and barn and purchas- ed 60 Suffolkewesfrom Voel- mle Farms at Auburn. Their Suffolk flock now consists of 100 ewes, eight rams and of course. a large number of lambs which are arriving daily. The McCullough's expect to send only about :10 Iambs from this spring's crop to the Easter market in Toron- to. The balance of the 1981 lambs will be kept for possi- ble exporting. Asked if any rams were sent to Brazil last year. McCullough said, "No, we didn't keep any males as they were sent to the Easter market. but. this year we should have some males for other countries." The new sheep producer added. I find this occupa- tion really interesting and challenging. I have no desire to go back pushing a pencil. This part of the country is really great." Since early January when the first of the 100 ewes began to lamb, the McCullough's have been checking their flock every two hours day and night. To comply with ROP regulations. the Iambs are required to be weighed when they are 50 days old and again when they have been in the McCullough barn for 100 days Asked about the number of Iambs his ewes produce, McCullough remarked, "I would like to get more twin- nings and can be achieved by culling out the poorer producers according to our records He continued. "Our lambs are gaining about a half ,kilogram in weight per day. I think that's pretty darn good. The price this year for market lambs is down con- siderably from last year to about $1.30 per pound." McCullough added, "Ex- ports from New Zealand are certainly hurting our prices: In that country wool is the main product and meat is only a byproduct." Of the 50 acre farm owned by the McCullough's only 21 acres are cultivated and most of that acreage produces hay which ac- counts for about 90 percent of the feed needs. The McCullough sheep are semi -confined being allowed to graze during daylight hours only during the summer months. McCullough said the Suffolk breed of sheep is producing heavier and longer animals over the last couple of years. , He added, "I have read in magazines that our Suffolk rams are almost 100 pounds heavier than those in England and they are longer in the leg." • A new balanced nutritious pa atable feed Shur -Gain Pig Tail Curler Let your little pigs show you how they like it!
