Records set While Wayne Gretzky is getting plenty of ink and rightly so for his great scoring prowess, an interesting record was set in Washington, Sunday night. Former London Knight junior Dennis Maruk scored three goals to become the first Washington Capital to score 50 goals in one season. It's a great accomplishment to count half a hun- dred goals in 80 games for a team that can win only 26 times and finish out of the playoffs. Getting back to Wayne Gretzky, it would appear safe to assume he will continue to improve in the next couple of years and his own records should fall each season. Not only will Gretzky improve, but, so will the young Edmonton club and it's easy to imagine he could hit the 200 point mark by the 1983-84 season. By that time the old goal and assist records of Phil Esposito and Bobby Orr will be forgotten. Look for improvement Records achieved in spring training baseball games don't mean much when the season opens Thurs- day of this week, but they indicate the three teams drawing the most support in this area should do quite well. Of the 26 major league teams only the California Angels have a better record than the Detroit Tigers. Most of the experts pick Detroit to finish fourth in the American League east behind Baltimore, Milwaukee and New York. The Baltiimore Orioles expected to win all the marbles are in second last position in the overall American grapefruit league exhibition season. Tiger pitcher Jack Morris won his fifth game of the season Sunday putting him in a tie for the team record with Frank Lary and Jim Slaton. The Orioles are being called to win mainly because of a strong starting pitching staff of Scott McGregor, Steve Stone, Mike Flanagan, Dennis Martinez and Jim Palmer. The Detroit Tigers and Toronto Blue Jays open the season in Detroit Thursday, Saturday and Sunday and do the same thing at the CNE Stadium in Toronto Mon- day afternoon. While they appear to be a bit improved, the Blue Jays will be hard pressed to equal their record of last year in playing .500 ball through the first 60 games mainly because of the schedule. In their first 23 games, the Jays will meet New York, Baltimore, Milwaukee and Detroit. Toronto just doesn't have the necessary left handed pitchers to stop heavy left handed hitters, especially in Detroit. The Yankees have ari unusual situation with four southpaw starting pitchers in Tom Underwood, Rudy May, Tommy John and Ron Guidry syhile all their relief pitchers throw from the right side. The bright spots in the Toronto lineup are pitchers Dave Stieb and Jim Clancy and centre fielder Lloyd Moseby who has won that position from Rick Bosetti. Hockey on the air Sunday night was an excellent time for anyone wanting to listen to hockey games by the way of radio. With very little effort in twisting the dial we came across four hockey broadcasts and two involved former Exeter players. The Stratford Cullitons junior game from St. Catharines was the first one encountered with locals Dave Shaw and Tom Coates in action. One of the Strat- ford goalies. Rick Petrie is now employed at the Ex- eter branch of Victoria and Grey. Then came the voice of Roy Caley talking about the Petrolia Squires and Cambridge Hornets and Ex- eter native Bill Fairbairn, a member of the Petrolia team. The two other games were from the NHL and were the Leafs in Quebec and the Detroit Red Wings ending a miserable season in Washington. In addition two NIII, games were shown on the special channel on cable television. Cheering for the Hobs The Montreal Canadiens should be getting a little more than the normal vocal support as they start the NHL playoffs this week against the Edmonton Oilers. We would imagine that John Ferguson and Don Cherry of Canada's national team which left Monday for Europe are hoping the Canadiens knock the Oilers off in three straight. Ferguson has left on slot on his roster open and if Edmonton is eliminated in the minimum of three games, Wayne Gretzky is expected to fill that opening. Gretzky would appear to be natural for world hockey play. He is a tremendous playmaker and as the most shadowed performer in the NHL is used to being held and grabbed and generally interfered with which is quite common in overseas competition. Fourth game in Zurich, Thursday Buckeyes lead Hensall in final The Zurich Buckeyes have taken a two game lead over the Hensall Sherwoods in the championship round of the South Huron intermediate hockey league. The defending champion Buckeyes scored a 5-3 vic- tory in Hensall Thursday night and came back to win by the same score on Zurich arena ice Sunday afternoon. The third game of the best - of -seven series was played last night, Tuesday with the fourth slated for the Zurich arena Thursday night with game time set for 8:30 p.m. The Buckeyes scored the first three goals in Sunday's game and were ahead by at least two goals at anytime during the balance of the game. The game was less than four minutes old when Kerry Bedard converted a pass from Steve Bedour to open the scoring for the Buckeyes. At 9:20, Pat Bedard made the score 2-0 as he hit the Hensall net on a pass from defenceman Kris Bedard. Kerry Bedard registered his second goal of the game near the 13 mark on an unassisted effort and the Zurich club was three goals up. Less than a minute later, the Sherwoods hit the scoreboard for the first time. Jamie Caldwell was the successful shooter on a pass from Rick Ingram. Before the first 20 minutes ended, the Zurich three goal margin was regained as captain Kim McKinnon hit the mark with the assist going to Mike Clarke. Each team was able to score one goal in the middle i period and both came on three-way passing com- binations. Rick Ingram was the Hensall goal getter with assists being credited to Jamie Caldwell and goalie Dave Holmes while Steve Bedour replied for the Buckeyes on passes from Kerry Bedard and Greg Kirk. The only goal of the third and final period was fired by Terry Caldwell of the Sherwoods on a play started by Gary Kyle and Dwight Consitt. Referees George Tryon, and Claude Daw handed out 19 penalties to each club. All were of the minor variety except a 10 minute misconduct to Jamie Caldwell of Hensall as time was running out. Score early Most of the scoring in Thursday's opening game of the series took place in the first period with the Buckeyes holding a 3-2 lead. The other three scores came in the final 20 minutes of play. The Buckeyes started the game scoring at 4:28 as Jeff O'Brien hit the Hensall net on a pass from Marvin Merner. The Sherwoods took less than four minutes to get the equalizer as Al Taylor converted a pass from Murray Connolly. At the midway mark of the period, Steve Bedour popped in a pass from Kerry Bedard and eight minutes later the same pair combined to score the third Buckeye goal of the TRIPPED UP — Zurich goalie Juergan Hellman seems to be watching impartially as team- mate Mike Clarke (2) takes a spill over Hensall's Dwight Consitt. The Buckeyes took a two game lead over the Hensall Sherwoods Sunday. WHERE'S THE PUCK — Zurich's Kris Bedard (3) is the only player on his feet as goalie Juergan Hellman and two other players scramble for the pi. ck. Both teams were playing rough and -ready hockey as Zurich defeated Hensall 5-3, Sunday to take a two game lead in the South Huron league final. With only one second remaining, Al Taylor registered for the Sherwoods on a three-way effort with Dave Kinsman and Lloyd Allen. After a scoreless second session, Kris Bedard counted for Zurich with Mike Clarke and Pat Bedard assisting on a power play attempt at 4:53 of the final frame. Pat Bedard picked up his second goal of the night for the Buckeyes at 8:01 on passes from Gerald Weido and Kerry Bedard and 59 seconds later Dwight Consitt completed the Hensall scoring on a pass from Terry Caldwell. The Buckeyes took eight of the 14 minor penalties handed out.
