Former model offers unique service
Times -Advocate, April 8, 1981 Poge 7.
Wrapped in plastic to help shrink
By MARY ALDERSON
Now I know what yester-
day's chicken feels like when
it's covered in Saran Wrap
and lying in the frig. Ex-
cept that I wasn't cold. In
fact, when I was wrapped In
plastic, I was very warm.
Body wrapping it's the
latest weapon m the battle of
the bulge. And it's now
available in Exeter.
Former model Ann
Baynham in her shop "Se-
cond Look", has added body
wrapping to her list of ser-
vices. It's a technique
whereby cream in applied to
the body, anJ then the area
is wrapped tightly in plastic
to lose inches. According to
Ann, it's a method of ridding
the body of cellulite without
the aid of machines.
Cellulite is an accumula-
tion of waste materials and
carbohydrates which are
trapped in large fat cell
chambers between muscle
tissue and the skin, she ex-
plains.
Body wrapping tightens up
the skin, and trims off in-
ches, Ann says. Although she
admits it's not some kind of
miracle, sheis a believer, and
she has about 15 satisfied
customers who will back her
up, she adds.
Ann says her first reaction
to body wrapping was "it
sounds great if it works".
She confesses that she was
very pessimistic until she
saw the results for herself.
At first she just tried it on
herself and her sisters. But
in December, she started do-
ing it for her other
customers.
Second Look is located in
the family room of Ann's
home at 199 William Street,
where she lives with her hus-
band and three small
daughters. Body wrapping is
just one of her many ser-
vices. She started in the
cosmetic business, offering
make up applications and
lessons. She also does
facials, eyebrow arching,
eyelash and eyebrow tinting,
manicures, ear piercing, and
waxing to remove hair.
Because of the nature of
her services, it is important
to be discreet, Ann says.
That's why her shop is in her
home, rather than on Main
Street.
She says that businesses
such as hers are becoming
more and more popular.
Two such' places in London
are Profiles and Skintreet.
Unfortunately, Many peo-
ple aren't aware of the kind
of services she offers.
Because of the name "Se-
cond Look", she has even
been asked if she is selling
antiques and used furniture,
she says.
To understand what body
wrapping is all about, Ann
offered to give me a treat-
ment. Anything that would
take inches sounded
appealing!
"It's not a method of los-
ing weight, just a way of
shrinking fat cells," Ann
warns. She says than. the
body wrapping works best if
you are dieting and following
an exercise program. "It's
not going to be as effective if
you go home and eat a big
piece of chocolate cake,"
Ann adds.
Ann can wrap any or all
parts of the body. An en-
tirewrap will cost you $30.
The midriff and tummy will
cost $15 and the neck and
chin area is $6. She will do
thighs for $10 and hips for
$15, or hips and thighs
together for $20. The upper
arm is also an important
place to tone up skin.
Ann says that the midriff
and tummy is most popular
place for body wrapping, and
that sounded good to me.
She gives you an attractive
sarong to wear, and applies
the cream generously to the
area. to be wrapped.
The cream looks a bit like
Noxema, but smells strongly
of cinnamon. Her brand is
called "White Pearl". It's
made entirely of natural,
herbal ingredients, designed
to penetrate the skin and
break down the fat cells, an
information sheet says.
It immediately feels very
warm, something like a
good, old-fashioned mustard
plaster. The fact sheet Ann
supplies says that the cin-
namon creates the heat.
Among the other ingredients
are garlic oil, soya bean oil,
neomycin to prevent infec-
tion, and wheat germ for
vitamin E.
Then the wrapping is put
on. Ann says her favourite is
Glad Wrap, because it is the
strongest, she has found. "I
could make a commercial
for them," she laughs. She
also likes Stretch and Seal.
Ann sticks the wrap to the
cream on your skin and then
she stands stil, while you
turn round and round. Soon
you're mummified in the
plastic wrap or at least my
midriff was. Ann gently
pulls and twists the wrap, as
it tightens. Underneath, it is
very hot.
Prior to applying the
wrap, Ann measures your
midriff in two places. She
makes little marks on fhe
skin with a ball point pen, to
be sure she gets the tape
measure back in the same
place after the treatment.
Sure enough, an hour later
the wrapping was removed,
one measurement was a half
inch less,while the other was
an full inch smaller. Just as
she had promised.
Ann says that depending
on the person, and where

they are wrapped,
measurements should be a
quarter -inch to an inch
smaller after every wrap-
ping.
So you don't stop with just
one wrap. She recommends
that you come back six
times, every four to seven
days. By that time, the fat
cells should be completely
tightened.
The midriff wrapping
makes bending a little dif-
ficult, so for the hour it stays
on, Ann stretches you out in
a recliner chair. When she
does an entire body, she says
she pulls the blinds, locks
the door, and lets the client
lay down on the sofa bed m
her shop for the hour.
Ann says that most of her
customers are in the 20 to 40
age bracket. But body wrap-
ping will work for any age,
she stresses.
Some ladies bring books or
magazines to read;'- or
there's a television to watch -*tor only $5, and for the same
for than hour when you can't price she will tint your
move. But Ann offered to eyebrows or eyelashes. The
give me a facial, which
would take the same amount
of time.
The facial is a very relax-
ing, very comfortable ex-
perience. Ann started off by
cleaning my face with a
delicious smelling red
currant cleansing milk.
Then to remove the
cleanser, she went over my
face again with a
refreshing floral scented
blue lotion. That was follow-
ed by a honey and almond
scrub, which certainly
smelled good enough to eat.
The scrub had bits of al-
mond in it, and felt granular
with an ampul - a mixture of
vitamins to keep it healthy.
After that comes the relax-
ing massage, and a cream
mask is applied. Ann lets
you rest for a few minutes
with cotton balls dipped in
witch hazel over your eyes.
She then treats you with a
wheat germ spray, and
removes the mask. A day
cream is applied to protect
the skin. A facial is a very
soothing way to spend an
hour, and it only costs $10.
Ann says that after the
facial most women don't
want to re -apply make-up
because their skin feels so
fresh.
A make-up application
costs $8.50. Ann says she has
done several wedding par-
ties, to make sure everyone
looks their best for the im-
portant event. She will give
you a lesson in make-up
.application for 810.00.
• Eyebrows can be shaped
like sand. This was to
remove any dead skin cells.
Ann explains that a person's
skin is constantly replacing,
itself, and the old skin needs
to be removed to have a
clean face.
After the scrub, Ann
steamed my face by apply-
ing hot towels. Normally she
would use a steamer, but
because I was in the midst of
a body wrapping treatment,
she felt I was probably
warm enough.
Next Ann used a special in-
strument to remove any
comedones that's a nice
word for pimples and
blackheads, Ann explains.
Then the skin is treated
tummy
tinting will permit you to
throw away your eyebrow
pencil or your mascara, she
says.
She uses a safe vegetable
dye which darkens the tiny
hairs. She says the tinting is
especially useful for
someone who is allergic to
make-up. She is hoping to
get a tint that will thicken
eyelashes, which recently
went on the market in the
United States.
Ear piercing is another of
her popular services. For
$8.00 she will put a hole in
your ear, and leave you with
an attractive stud earring.
Waxing to remove hair is a
very big part of Ann's
business. She stresses that it
is not a permanent way to
remove hair, and says that
there really isn't any perma-
nent method.
The hot wax (she keeps it
in a crock pot) is applied to
the skin, and immediately
peeled off. The hair comes
with it, pulled out by the
roots. Yes, it can hurt, Ann
admits. Some people find the
waxing more painful than
others.
Ann says that the more
waxing treatments you get,
the less often you need them.
The waxing breaks down the
hair, making it softer and
finer. At first you may need
to come once every two are
three weeks - .later once
every two or three months
will be frequent enough.
Ann can remove hair from
the upper lip or chin, un-
derarms, legs, and bikini
lines". An upper lip will
cost $5, while full legs will
cost $30.
Looking good is very im-
portant at Second Look. Ann
trained as a model in Toron-
to, and later managed a
modelling agency in London.
She has taken special
