men's slow pitch league
committee is involved in the
pre -season battles of setting
up ground rules and trying to
establish ju9t where the
money will come from and
why it is needed. The
number one coach, Ken
Mason, can be seen tearing
his hair out every time the
phone rings and it's about his
team, The Bears.
There will be another slow -
pitch team in the area this
summer, but it will not be
playing in any league. The
club is forming a team to
play fun ball. We intend to
challenge the other clubs in
our zone and possibly raise
some funds for their
projects. To be able to join
the team you must be a
member of the club and
cannot play on any other
team. You must want to have
fun and be able to do a little
travelling. More to come on
this at a later date.

informed by Don that there
will in fact be a roast for us.
It's to be held at their
residence at 2 p.m April 31.
Have you had a chance to
look around your homes and
communities'? Since the
snow has melted and the
grass is visible I'm surethat
the usual post winter debris
catches your eye. What say
we get together and put on a
mass community clean up.
Our part of Ontario probably
gets as many visitors as any
other so it would be to our
advantage to try and keep
our laws and streets as neat
and tidy as possible. Never
pass a fault.

subjected to greater
scrutiny, and rip-offs won't
be allowed.
But challenges will not be
limited just to supply
management boards. Every
board in Ontario faces an un-
certain future in many
repsects.
The 1980's will be a
volatile decade. Every
board, regardless of their
powers. will be under
pressure to modify market
swings. and to improve
stability.
The challenge will be to
find new methods of achiev-
ing stability that don't have
the costs and constraints
associated with supply
management. If the beef in-
dustry can get a meat im-
port law. then there may be
other alternatives available
to other commodities.
The role of the relatively
new Appeals Tribunal, will
be a major challenge for
both governments and
boards. So many appeals are
being made to that body, it is
now emerging as a "super -
board". If the present pace
continues. this Appeals
Tribunal will. by default, be
setting the price of farm
products marketed by price -
setting boards, will be set-
ting boards and agents fees,
will be deciding who gets
quota and at what price, and
will be controlling almost
every board decision that is
not otherwise decided by
Cabinet.
What will be the implica-
tion of such all encom-
passing authority by an ap-
pointed board on the future
role of marketing boards?
The next decade will be an
interesting one for
marketing boards. The
challenges will come from
all sides. and they will corne
fast and furious. Indeed, run-
ning a marketing board will
be put under such severe
public scrutiny, that it will
he like living in a fish bowl."
