FARMER OF THE WEEK
A Stephen township far-
mer who produces more than
3,600 weaner pigs each year
is working hard to organize
similar producers
throughout the province.
Martin DeBruyn, RH 1,
Exeter has helped set up
weaner pig committees in
every part of Ontario as part

Martin and Maryke DeBruyn pursue Sam along

•
of the Ontario Hog
Producers Marketing Board.
He said, "We will be
making recommendations to
the board on weaner related
problems."
DeBruyn said there needs
to be more balance between
assistance for weaner pig
farmers and those
specializing in market hogs.
A stabilization program of
one dollar for each weaner
pig ends on April 1.
This year DeBruyn ex-
pects to get about $7,000
under a sow stabilization
program while the
maximum for a market hog
producer is $30,000. He ad-
ded, "It doesn't appear to be
fair as we have the same
imput costs, interest rates
and risks."
DeBruyn continued, "It's
really rough on weaner pig
producers. My Quality Swine
supervisor tells me he has
recently lost four producers
in his area."
A native of Holland with a
university degree in hor-
ticulture, DeBruyn moved to
his Lot 18, Concession 4 farm
some five years ago and has
just completed construction
of two new barns with 12,000
square feet of floor space.
This is the first year he has
reached capacity of 200 sows
and eight boars. Breeding
stock is also purchased from
Quality Swine.
DeBruyn replaces about
on -third of his sow herd each
year. The replacement price
is about $200 each. Boars
may cost as much as $700 but
are kept possibly as long as
five years.
The young pigs are weaned
at about four weeks of age
allowing for 2.2 litters from
each sow per year.
DeBruyn receives
valuable help from his wife
Maryke in maintaining his
large weaner pig operation.
