Times-Advocate, 1981-03-25, Page 31Revival Centre Sunday morning Rev. Ray Brewster spoke from Rev : 3: 7-13 on the message to the church of today, Philadelphia. God always has a message for His people. God told this church that they were doing well, but to move on in the Lord. Many people hear God speaking to them through a servant of God, then do not do what verse 13 says,to hear what God says to the churches. Bible society film on Haiti Doug Butler led the singing for the evening service. Loys Melanson playing her guitar, sang "Stand Firm in God". Rev. Howlett, of the Canadian learning for Lent Iola Goring was hostess for Lucan United Church Women's second session of Learning for Lent at the church Wednesday. She in- troduced Sue Hasket.t who spoke briefly on principles of Interior Design. then focuss- ed on methods of window treatment. Sue explained the impor- tance of suiting curtains and drapes to the type of room and furniture, and had many practical suggestions regar- ding fabric choice and colour co-ordination. Following coffee and con- versation. Rev. Bruce Pocock. Phyllis O'Neil and Marion Hodgins from Holy Trinity Anglican Church continued the Journeys of Faith Bible Study. They chose three significant in- cidents from Mary's "Journey". Phyllis dealt with the angel's announcement that Mary was chosen to be the mother of God's Son. Although at first Mary ex- pressed alarm and doubt, her final response was one of faith and commitment to God's call. regardless of the cost. Marion Hodgins continued by considering Mary's time of testing. when having come with some of her fami- ly to see her Son, she was ap- parently rejected. Christians who take a stand for Christ today often face this same problem of rejec- tions by family or friends. This can be part of the cost of being a Christian for those who choose to obey Christ as well as to profess Him. Mr. Pocock concluded the study by speaking of Mary's experience at the Cross. When Jesus committed Mary to the apostle John. He was reaching out to assure her of His love and care. At this painful time of her life, Mary realized that she was fully accepted by her Son. Likewise. we today find full acceptance at the Cross through Christ's forgiving love. and when we are open to Him. experience the true meaning of GRACE - Great Riches At Christ's Expense. There is no Learning for Lent this week during Winter Break, but the series will resume April 1. Bible Society, showed a film showing the work in Haiti. Scripture portions for Haiti, in Creole, are usually printed in Canada, then shipped to Haiti. As the poverty in Haiti is so deep, the Scriptures are distributed to the Haitians leas than cost, or free. About 80 percent of the people cannot read. Chur- ches' schools teach the people how to read using Scripture portions, beautifully illustrated, supplied by the Bible Society. The land is so dry in Haiti, the people walk miles for water from a spring. The people are as thirsty for God's word there as for water, . Rev. Ray Brewster, spoke from Rom. 10: 13-14 of sending preachers to tell others how to be saved. When we give to those who do the Lord's work we give to God. By helping others go to foreign lands we can all be missionaries. Rev. Brewster told of a church in Haiti that is building a • school. Rev. Brewster and Rev. and Mrs. Roger Mason plan to go to Haiti in June to help build this school. Rev. Brewster showed slides of their winter trip to Haiti, of this church, and the land and crowded cities there. Rev. Brewster hopes that 20 people will go to Haiti. The men will help build the school during the day, and help in church services in evenings. The ladies will help in Vacation Bible Schools. Anyone wishing to go or help financially can contact Rev. Brewster. • =TIMERS THREE — Andy Bathgate of the NHL Oldtimers is flanked by Lucan veterans Harry Wraith and Don Urbshott following Friday's exhibition game in Lucan. Kit Hearn in- troduced Roger as a former pupil, and expressed ap- preciation for the significant work he is doing now at the Bible College in Ailsa Craig. Roger began by giving the group a summary of Haiti's troubled history, and referred to the present cor- ruption in government which greatly hinders Haiti's progress asd a nation. He spoke of his reactions to the extreme poverty he en- countered. and expressed concern about the lack of training of many Haitian pastors. Illiteracy and dis- ease are two other major problems in Haiti today. Roger showed slides il- lustrating the poverty of the land, and some of the Chris- tian relief enterprises that are underway. He hopes to return to Haiti in June as part of a team of twelve to build a Christian school which will provide basic education for the children of IN ' MEMORY OF THOSE YOU HOLD G. Brown continues Lent series At the Lucan United Church, Sunday, Rev. Keith Brown continued the Lenten series on the "Words from the Cross" based on Matt. 27: 39-49, "The Word of Desolation". There were three factors in these words, said Mr. Brown "no cry was ever so filled with desolation, separation from God, and substitution for our sins. He had been forsaken numerous times, by His family, His community, His disciples, but His Father had always been with Him. This, however was not "'eternal" forsaking, as is the case with those who reject God. The door is always open for us to come to God as Jesus ac- cepted all the sins of the world when He died on the cress to set us free. He took our punishment, our place and suffered for our sins. These words express faith and trust as God stands close to those who call our "My God". It was at this moment that the veil of the temple was rent in two and no longer did anyone need a priest or minister to intercede with God for him. "He bore your sins and mine and gave His life to be our Saviour for now and for eternity" concluded Mr. Brown. Dorothy Dedels gathered the children at the front of the church for a delightful story on "Trust" before taking them out for Junior If your car's out of shape you get rid of it, right?
