FARMER OF THE WEEK
A father and son com-
bination operate a successful
dairyfarm on the south
boundary of Stephen
township.
The sign in front of one of
the three farm houses on the
250 acre property at Lot 14
and part of Lot 13 says
Harglenn Holsteins,
Harvey Hodgins and son
Glenn have been in part-
nership since 1976. At the
present time the Harglenn
operation is milking 50 cows
which produce more than 90
percent of their allotted milk
quota.
Harvey Hodgins said, "We
hit 92 percent of our quota
last year and I would hope to
hit the 95 mark in 1981."
The Harglenn quota from
the Ontario Milk Marketing
Board is 546 litres fluid and
140,000 litres industrial.
On the subject of milk
prices, Hodgins said,
"Prices are okay. We get an
increase every once and
Joan Hodgins and Sussex Comets
awhile, but, consumers don't
seem to realize that most of
that is taken up in extra
production costs."
Milk is stored in a tank
which has a capacity of 7,200
pounds and is picked up by
truck every second day.
All of the feed for the some
170 head of cattle housed on
the Hodgins farms is home
grown on their 250 acres
and another 115 acres which
are rented. Only con-
centrates and calf feeds are
purchased.
Some winter wheat and
white beans are grown in
order to provide the proper
soil rotation.
Corn, mixed grain and
hay produces the bulk of the
yearly feed needs. Glenn
Hodgins added, "We may
sell a little corn, but, only if it
is surplus."
All bull calves are kept and
raised through to market
weight. Most heifers are kept
to bolster the Harglenn
breeding stock.
rfarvey Hodgins added,
"We may have a few heifers
to sell this year. We lost four
cows last year and that's the
most in the 21 years I have
been in business."
While most of the breeding
is done artificially, the
Hodgins have retained one of
their own bulls Ted Babmuir
George.
An addition of 54 by 52 feet
was made to the barn in 1980
at a cost of $65,000 on the
farm formerly owned by
Harvey's father Roy.
Glenn's wife Joan has a
farm project of her own. She
has a flock of 440 Red Comet
Sussex laying hens which at
the present time are
