twenty years. attended our
club meeting and breakfast
Sunday morning.
Four area youths
presented their speeches on
the topic Commitment to
Share-. which was supplied
by Optimist International.
The winner of the boys class
was none other than Scott
Merrylees. Scott is to be
congratulated for being the
only, area boy with the in-
terest in truing for a
scholarship and the chance
to represent our club in the
upcoming zone finals to be

Paulette Rothbauer. The
judges had a tough time in
deciding on the out corse.
Nervous jitters were ap-

gas into our energy programme. And if the new acquisition
is as well-run as the Post Office, Lord help us all.
And. as I have always said, if anybody wants to separate.
let them go to it. I, for one, would not fight to hold Canada
together. to force an erring son or daughter to stay home
against his her will.
If Newfounland wants to go, let her lit?) go. With all that
oil. and all that fish. along with some spuds from P.E.I..
the natives could live like kings on fish 'n chips forever.
The country would be bigger than Iceland. and a lot better
off financially.
But if she goes. let the government stop reaching into my
wallet for welfare and baby bonuses and coastguard protec-
tion. and new air -strips for Newfie.
I've run out of space, and haven't even begun. If you are
as sore as I am about the way this country is falling apart,
under an onslaught of sheer. unadulterated crap. sound off.
Let's hear you. Shout it from the housetops. If you are as
sore as I am. welcome, Sorehead. Let's be Soreheads
together.
The members and parents
have volunteered to assist
these fine young speakers.
With our help Scott and Julie
are going to go a. long way.
Hopefully. to Florida in June
to represent our club at the
Optimist International
Convention. Our club wishes
these kids the best of luck.
In the past we have
endeavored to run many
functions for the kids in and
out of the township. In the
future we plan many more.
An Easter egg hunt is the
tirst then there will be minor
ball including T -ball, pic-
nics. fishing derbies and
more road rallies. For the
adults there will be dart and
ball tournaments, bus trips,
socials and whatever we can
dream up. You will see some
of our fund raising efforts
when you visit the Zehr's
and Saveways stores in Ex-
eter.
Goderich is presenting
Young Canada Hockey again
this year. A couple of years
ago we sent a pee -wee team
made up of five pee-wees
and eight atoms. The result
was in three games our kids
scored none and allo*ed 51
goals. They played their best
and were rewardedwith the
Most Sportsman like award
and the London
Sportscasters Award.
This year they arrived
with a more solid team and
Saturday morning they
scored their first goal and
only one in a defeat at the

This program stops abuse.
Not everyone who continues to receive
unemployment insurance after starting a
new job is cheating. They may still be enti-
tled to some benefits. Or sometimes they've
made an honest mistake. Unfortunately, a
great deal of money has been wrongly paid
out in the past to people who don't report
a new job. Now our Report on Hirings
program is putting an effective halt to this,
thanks to employers who participate. Soon,
people getting U 1 will know they must tell
us that they've found work and reportall
their earnings.
Big and small companies are
helping us succeed.
-Together, the Canada Employment and
Immigration Commission and employers
are detecting potential overpayments. With
Report on Ilirings, employers give us the
starting date and Social Insurance Number
for each new employee or send extracts from
computer payroll tapes. We cross-check this
information with the Social Insurance
Numbers of people getting UI. When the
system detects people wrongly collecting
benefits, we investigate and a penalty or
prosecution may follow. But our job is not
to penalize or prosecute the people. It's to
pay benefits to people who should get
them - no more and no less.

Are your little ones in-
terested in an Easter egg
hunt? You can find out if you
bring them to the Optimist
Hall April 19. President Jim
is organizing one so that the
Optimist Easter Bunny will
not be subjected to the
strenuous job of delivering
to the homes as did our San-
ta Claus.
The next meeting of the
club will be held April 5 at 10
a.m. It is to be a regular
meeting and also an induc-
tion meeting for new
members. All you fellows
out there had better plan to
attend and greet your new
Optimists. At the same time
we would like you to have
your vests. with your names
sewn on. so that we can have
some semblance of unifor-
mity. Dinner badges and
name tags are nowavailable
for those of you who could
not attend the past meeting.
Everyone is invited to
drop in at the Don Johnson
home (at a date yet to be
decided) for a pork roast.
Charlette won the midget
draw for a pig on Saturday
night at the dance. The prize
was donated by and through
the generosity of Tony

Jones. Perry Knee, Tom
Tomes and Jim Allen. Many
thanks to all who supported
this worthwhile effort and
the kids.
The arena will be closing
soon to prepare for the
summer hockey school in-
viation. We regret to inform
you that the free public
skating will soon come to an
end. Thank you for giving us
the opportunity to supply
your families with a fun Sun-
day afternoon during the
winter.
Unfortunately I was not in-
formed about the change in
hour which has occurred the
past two Sundays but as I am
sure you know the ones who
should be are always the last
to know. Thanks for suffer-
ing through our dilemma.
Managers of the week; Ar-
nold and Ken Loges at the
Double K Garage in Cen-
tralia. It is our wish that
your future will have nothing
but success in store for you.
We're with you all the way.
Kitch Pavlick you did a
super job on the oratorical
contest. Keep it up and show
the communities that our
Optimist Club is the best.
Remember: You always

Sound like pretty good neighbors? They are!
They're your local businesspeople, and they
do all this and more. Local firms don't just take
your money. They give back part of their profits
in the form of local taxes, charitable donations
and employee salaries. It's all part of doing
business... and being a good neighbor.
Part of their profits are also reinvested in the
community. As they remodel their stores, add
on to their buildings and open n,ew locations,
they help build a better economic environ-
ment. When local businesses prosper, you
and your community prosper. Get to know the
nicest people in town. Shop locally.
No need to roam... the best shopping's here at home!
