Politics is a topic I usually avoid because I'm not versed in the subject. However, the OQtario election campaign intrigued me. According to market researchers hired by the Progressive Conservatives, the voting public could be won with a catchy ad Mini -thoughts campaign. I was a bit mif- fed. Just because I could sing the campaign jingle in the shower did not mean 1 would mark the PC ballot in the polling booth. I never quite figured out what the promise was, BUT 1 knew who was going to pay for it - the taxpayers. I was concerned with the economy, unemployment, an education system that seems to be cutting back, a human rights code that does not prevent discrimination against handicapped people in this the International Year of Disabled Persons, and amendments to the Building Code to make all public buildings accessible to all members of the public, that have been under study for five years. Please bring proof of age (Birth Cer- tificate or Baptismal Certificate) By the time you read this, the outcome of the election will be history. Advance polls predicted the Con- servatives would be returned with a majority government. Whatever the results, I trust the people of Ontario voted with intelligence and thoughtfulness, and whatever party is now in power, I trust it will work for the betterment of all residents of the province. • Perhaps now we should take time out to pat our- selves on the backs for surviving another election, two Friday thirteenths in a row, and a St Patrick's Day that was almost obliterated by snow. • My ego was given a boost recently when a friend asked me to coach her before she took her driver's test. Some of my family reacted with mock surprise that she asked and amazement that she passed. I can't take all the credit, though, because other teachers road with her, too. • Amusing remarks come - Odds'n ends from would-be teachers trying to instruct new drivers. One man admits when he lets his girlfriend behind the wheel: "I know she's going to stop at the stop sign, but I find myself yelling at her anyway." The most honest advice I've heard canie from another man: "Watch the way I drive and don't drive that way." • I thought I had considered the situation of refugees resettling in Canada, but, after meeting a family at London airport two weeks ago, I realize I had not fully grasped the trauma. No one can, unless they have lived through it. I wonder how I would handle having to leave my country, my culture and perhaps my family to settle in a new land with un- familiar language' and customs. I now have a revived appreciation of my homeland and a growing admiration for the new Canadians who are starting out in our communities. COUNTRY BAKERY 367 Main St. Exeter 235-2525 Chicken is economical Ontario chicken is an economical choice either fresh or frozen. Marketing specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food suggest you consider several options before choosing. Frozen chicken is your best buy when you plan to keep the poultry for longer storage. When buying frozen poultry, you may save on the packaging material and the cost of freezing, since they have already been done. Ontario poultry is frozen at its peak of freshness. For best quality, frozen whole chicken should be used within 12 months and frozen chicken parts within six months. Chicken may be cooked from the frozen state, but results are best when it has been thawed. Frozen chicken can be thawed in the refrigerator (5 hr lb), in cold (1 hr lb), or at room tem- perature (1'. hr Ib). Thaw frozen chicken just before it is to be cooked; never thaw and then refreeze without cooking. r JULIA'S HAIR DESIGN 180 King St., Hensall (Next to Shaw's Dairy Store) SPRING SPECIAL Cut Cut Shampoo andor and With this Off Blowdry Set coupon Offer runs Mar. 25 - April 11 15% Open Tues. -Fri.
