Even by playing a quarterof the third period two
players short, Exeter
managed to defeat Mitchell
5-4 to win the bantam
division of the Huron -Perth
houseleague tournament.
The tournament featured
20 teams in the novice, atom,
pee wee and bantam leagues
from Exeter, Mitchell,
Clinton and Seaforth. Held at
the South Huron rec centre,
the teams played 24 games
this weekend.
In the final tournament
game, Sunday night, Michellbantams opened the scoring
and led 20 after the first
period.

oust Goderich
The Centralia College
Saints scored two straight
victories this week to
eliminate the Goderich
Merchants and advance to
the semi-final round of
playoffs in the South Huron
hockey league.
The Saints edged the
Merchants 9-7 in Goderich
Monday night and clinched
the series at Huron Park
Thursday with a convincing
8-2 victory.
The Saints now meet the
Zurich Buckeyes in a best -of -
five series while the Hensall
Sherwoods and Forest Boyds
tangle in the other semi-final
set.
The Saints and Buckeyes
meet at the Stephen town-
ship arena tonight, Wed-
nesday and back in Zurich,
Monday night. Both games
start at 8:30 p m.

In Monday's 9-7 win for the
Saints, Ken Vanos scored
five times to pace the win-
ners.
Vanos scored two goals in
the first period with Tim
Breedon and Ed
Michniewicz assisting.
Scoring in single fashion for
the College were Dave
McFadden and Ed
Michniewicz with Vanos and
Michniewicz drawing
assists.
Larry Gainor and Bill
Lewis were the first period
marksmen for Goderich.
In the second period, each
team scored two goals.
Vanos and McFadden were
the Centralia scorers while
Ron Corriveau and Bruce
Bowan replied for Goderich.
The third period was also
even with each team scoring
threetimes and the Saints
were able to maintain their
twogoal margin picked up in
the first period.
Ken Vanos counted all
three College goals to up his
night's total to five with Ed
Michniewicz getting two
assists and Dave Burnett
one.
Scoring the final three
Goderich goals were Rob
Standen, Len Kolkman and
Phil Paquette.
Vanos stars again
Ken Vanos was again the
scoring star for the Saints in
their 8-2 romp Thursday
night with three goals all in
the first period.
Randy Johnston also
scored for the Saints in the
first period on passes from
Mike Sadler and Jim Coffey.
Two Michniewicz markers
were unassisted while Ed
Michniewicz and Wayne
Kibler assisted on the other.
Each team scored one goal
in the middle frame. Ed
Michniewicz tallied for the
Saints on a pass from Ken
Vanos with their team
playing shorthanded while
Ron Corriveau replied for
Goderich.
Larry Gainor scored for
Goderich at the 15 second
mark of the final frame and
then the Saints took over
again to dominate the
scoring.
Ed Michniewicz, Tim
Breedon and Wayne Kibler
were on the firing end of the
final three Centralia goals.
Topscorers in
South Huron
League statistician Bob
Somerville has released the
final scoring statistics of the
South Huron hockey league
for the regular schedule.
Ken Vanos of Centralia
College finished in first
place with 31 goals and the
same number of assists for
62 points.
Team-mate Ed
Michniewicz was second
with 48 points, followed by
two members of the Hensall
Sherwoods Jamie Caldwell
and Rick Ingram with 46 and
45 points. respectively.
Next came Phil Paquette
and Len Kolkman of the
Goderich Merchants with 36
and 35 points. respectively.
Dave Kinsman of Hensall
was seventh with 34 points
and MarkCronynoftheCen-
tralia Marauders one point
farther back at 33.
Completing the top
scorers in a tie for ninth
place with 32 points each
were Rick Funston of Cen-
tralia Marauders, Chris
McGregor of Forest and Phil
Petrie from Goderich.
Ken Bergman was the top
point getter for the Exeter
Mohawks with 16 goals and
14 assists good for 30 points.
Jim Laird of the Forest
Boyds picked up 118 minutes
to lead in that department.
Dale Quinn of Forest was se-
cond with 92 penalty
minutes.

Exeter domnated the
second period with a single
handed goal by John
McDermid and goals by
Scott Baptist, assisted by
John McDermid and Steve
Coates; and Don
Morley,assisted by Jeff
Francis and Sean Marcos,
making it 3-2 for Exeter.
Mitchell tied it up early in
the third, but Exeter again
took the lead off a goal by
Andy Lerikos, assisted by
John McDermid.
Al Pym's dramatic single
handed goal made it 5-3 for
Exeter. Pym scored seconds
after a face-off, while two
Exeter players, Tim
Robinson and John
McDermid, were in the
penalty box.
Exeter played the last
minute and a half two
players short, but Mitchell
could only capitalize on a
single goal to make the final
score 5-4 for Exeter.
With only four teams in the
bantam playoffs, Exeter was
given a second chance after
losing their first game to
Clinton 6-1, Friday night.
Scott Baptist, assisted by!
Gary Morrison and John
McDermid, scored for
Exeter.
Exeter beat Seaforth 4-2,
Saturday, to win the con-
solation and a chance at the
finals. Dan Morley scored
twice, and John McDermid
and Scott Baptist scored
once each for Exeter.
In the atom division,
Exeter lost its first game 1-0
to the Clinton 3 team.
Clinton 3 went on to win the
atom championship, but
Exeter, defeating Seaforth 3-
2, moved to the consolation
final. Steve Anderson scored
twice, and Jeff Kints once,
for Exeter against Seaforth.
Perhaps forshadowing the
later bantam game, Exeter
atoms were to take on
Mitchell. ,
Mitchell 'Started strong,
scoring 19 seconds into the
game. A second period goal
by Steve Anderson, assisted
by Laurie Chalmers, and a
single handed goal by
Anderson late in the third
finished it 2-1; Exeter
winning the atom con-
solation.
The last second of the first
period saw Steve Pym score
the only, and the winning,
goal for the Exeter pee wees
to defeat the Clinton 2 team
in the first t"ound.
Exeter advanced to be
defeated 4-2 by the Mitchell 1
team. Darryl Hewry,
assisted by Mark Penhale
scored for Exeter in the first
period. Mitchell also scored
twice in the first, but Darryl
Hewry and Ted Lawson
assisted Brian Quinn's third
period tying goal.
To break the tie, three
players from each team got
a shot on the goalie. Mitchell
scored tw'c;:, to win the
game 4-2.
The same tie -breaking
method allowed Mitchell 2 to
defeat Mitchell 1 for the pee
wee championship.
Clinton 1 won the pee wee
consolation.
In the novice division,
Exeter was defeated 2-0 by
Seaforth, then routed 11-0 by
the Clinton 1 team.
Clinton 2 defeated Clinton
1, 4-3, to win the novice
championship.
The tournament was held
in lieu of play-off games, and
marks the end of the Huron -
Perth houseleague season.
Each participant was
given an olympic-style
medallion, the color in-
dicating their team's
standing. In addition, a draw
was held each game to
present a miniature hockey
stick as a memento to one
player on each team.
Doublers hold
dart lead
The Doublers continue to
hold a four point lead at the
top of the standings in the
Exeter Legion mixeo dart
league with 82 points.
The Itchy Niters are se-
cond with 78 points and the
Evil Eyes one point farther
back in third place. The
Winkers are fourth with 75
points and the last chance
fifth with 70 points.
