Keon who will be 41 years of age on March 22 and now with the Hartford Whalers probably holds a record which very few people know about. In more than 1,200 NHL. games, Keon has only drawn 95 minutes in penalties. Actually, according to the newest NHL guide before this season, his penalty time was 91 minutes in 1,230 league and playoff games. In addition. Keon played six years in the WHA with Minnesota. Indianapolis and New England and he logg- ed only 28 penalty minutes in 337 games. That's a grand total of 119 minutes, just a minute less than two complete games in 1,567 games in both leagues. In Keon's 15 years with the Toronto Maple Leafs he had a very impressive career. In his first season of 1960-61 he won the Calder trophy as the league's top rookie. He followed by capturing the Lady Byng trophy in 1961-62 and 1962-63, was named to the NHL second all star team in 1961-62 and again in 1970-71 and won the Conn Smythe trophy as the most valuable player in the NHL playoffs in 1966-67. More oldtimers While speaking of the hockey version of oldtimers, area fans will get a chance this Friday night to see an entire team of former stars at the Lucan arena. The Toronto Maple Leafs oldtimers will be in to take on the Lucan Selects in an exhibition game. At least 14 of the 19 players listed on the Toronto roster are well known to most hockey fans of the past 25 years. The complete lineup for both teams appears in an ad elsewhere in this issue. Headlining the Maple Leaf defence will be fellows like Harry Howell, Ivan Irwin and Pierre Pilotte. The youngest rearguard is Mike Pelyk kyho only hung up his skates three -years ago. The bestknown forwards are Norm Ullman, Andy Bathgate. Dean Prentice, Sid Smith, Pete Conacher and Jim Harrison. The two oldest players on the Toronto team will likely be Sid Smith who retired in 1958 after 10 years with the Leafs and Ike Hildebrand who called it quits in 1955-56. Hildebrand is also well known as one of Canada's top lacrosse players. The honour for the longest service in the NHL goes to Dean Prentice who retired in 1973-74 after,22 years and Norm Ullman's 20 year career which came to an end in 1976-77. The Lucan lineup is a combination of stars of yesteryears and a number still in the prime of life. In the first category we would point out former Lucan-Ilderton Combines who then moved up to the L -I Jets like Harry Wraith, Don Urbshott, Doug Galloway. These three will be active participants while Steve 'Storey of the same, era will be behind the bench in a managerial capacity. In the next age bracket would come Jack Chipchase. Rick Fifield, Bill Bannerman, Ted Ouimet and Bill Neil followed by almost youngsters Kevin Lightfoot. Dave Revington, Jim Hearn, Rick Freeman. Cec Nickles, Rick Martin, Gerry Jongeneel, Tom Hardy and Mike Wraith. In addition to manager Steve Storey, Lucan's reeve and all round athletic supporter Ivan Hearn will be coaching the selects with the help of Howard MacDonald It sounds like a fun evening and everyone should be treated to an excellent brand of hockey. The pace may be a bit slower than it was 20 years ago, but, the old- timers will have plenty of moves that will bring back pleasant memories. Nearing record Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers appears to be a shoo-in for the National Hockey League scoring championship. hut. he also has a chance of breaking the present scoring record held by Phil Esposito. Gretzky has 50 goals and 82 assists for 132 points and only 20 hack from Esposito's mark He still has 11 games remaining in which to get 21 points and a new mark. Esposito scored 76 goals and picked up the same number of assists for 152 points during the 1970-71 season. The schedule.that year consisted of only 78 games. two legs than the present 80. The just retired Esposito also holds the second highest scoring mark of 145 points achieved in the 1973- 74 season. Last year. Marcel Dionne and Wayne Gretzky shared the top spot with 137 points. Better chance The acquisition of goalie Bunny Laroque by the Toronto Maple Leafs seems to give their playoff chances a little more impetus. Laroque turned in an excellent performance against Washington Saturday night. He appeared to he a bit fortunate on a couple of shots, but. that's one of the assets of a good goalie You have to be a bit lucky to be good. The Leafs are currently tied with the Washington Capitols for the last two playoff spots with 60 points apiece and 10 games left to play. The Edmonton Oilers appear to be the only team able to catch Toronto or Washington. They have 57 points and one more game than the other two clubs remaining. di1veIikeaIifedependson it Meet Belmont in final Irish oust Mitchell The Lucan Irish are in the OHA Western Junior "D" hockey finals for the first time in 10 years. The Irish edgedtheMitchell Hawks 5-4 Sunday afternoon in Mitchell to win a hard fought series four games to two and the final game went into a second overtime period. Jeff Edwards sent the many Lucan fans in the packed Mitchell arena home happy as he finished off a fine three-way passing combination with Kevin Hartwick and John Medd at 19:11 of the second overtime period. In games earlier in the week. the Irish won 3-1 -Tuesday night only to have the Mitchell club battle back to win 5-4 in Lucan Friday night and force Sunday's sixth game. The Irish now take on the Belmont Bombers for the league championship and the right to advance to OHA playdowns. Belmont has lost only two games all year. One came during the regular schedule and the other to Bothwell in the southern group finals. The first game of the best- of- seven final will be played in Belmont tonight, Wed- nesday with the second contest slated for the Lucan Community Centre Saturday night at 8:15 p.m. Asked about the for- thcoming series with Belmont, Lucan manager Bob Taylor said, "If we play up to our potential as we did in most of the Mitchell series, they will know they've been in a hockey game." The Irish showed Sunday they were all set to wrap up the series. From the opening faceoff Todd Charlton fed a pass to Brian Murray and he went in and beat Dave Fischer in the Mitchell nets with only seconds having elapsed. That's the way the score remained until 19:14 of the second period when captain Brad Fischer scored for Mitchell. Each team scored one goal Mohawks eliminated The Exeter Mohawks were eliminated from further playoff action in the South Huron league Thursday night, but, they fought right to the end. Rob Sullivan of the Forest Boyds scored at 4:32 of overtime to give his club a 5- 4 victory over the Mohawks at the South Huron Rec centre. It was the second win for ,Forest and with two ties was enough for six points in the best -of -five series. Forest outscored the Mohawks two goals to one in each of the first two periods, but, the Exeter club bounced back with two unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes of play to force overtime. Wayne Parsons opened the scoring for Exeter at the five minute mark of the first period on a pass from Luc Gagnon. Bernie Murray put the Boyds on even terms at 7:28 on a three-way combination with Larry Hotson and Ron Harper and with only 14 seconds left Henry Veens on a solo dash put Forest in front. Rob Sullivan scored both Forest goals in the middle frame and Mike Anstett was the lone marksman for the Mohawks on passes from Jim Guenther and Wayne Parsons. The Mohawks struck quickly in a space of one minute near the halfway mark of the third and final period. Brion Penhale converted a pass from Mike Anstett at 10:33 and Dan Webb finished off a three-way effort with Luc Gagnon and Wayne Parsons only 53 seconds later to send the game into overtime. Forest now meets the Hensel' Sherwoods in the next round of playoffs. Lucan wins Shamrock Lucan won its second Shamrock league hockey playoff title when the novice won the "B" tournament in Dorchester. The crew knocked off Mt. Brydges 3-0 in the opener and then wrapped up the title with a 2-1 win in overtime against Dorchester. Steven Snider scored all three goals against Mt. Brydges, while Chris McLelland and Todd Hyde were the marksmen in the final. in the third period to send the game into overtime. Duncan Ferguson put the Hawks ahead at 4:25 and Jeff Edwards put the Irish back into contention with a successful shot at 12:32. Assisting were John Medd and Dean Densmore. Mitchell again drew first blood in the first 10 minute overtime session. Darryl Stacey hit the Lucan net at 5:50. It didn't take the Irish long to get that one back as Todd Charlton registered only 19 seconds later with assists going to Paul Medd and Brian Murray. The balance of the first overtime session was scoreless and so was most of the next 20 minute extra periods which was of the sudden -death variety. The crowd was about ready for another rest period, but, not the Irish. With only 49 seconds left to go Jeff Edwards became an instant hero for the Irish as he found an opening in the 'Mitchell net and it was all over. Both overtime were free periods of penalties as referee Rick Singleton let the players stick strictly to hockey.
