HomeMy WebLinkAboutTimes-Advocate, 1981-03-18, Page 6Page 6 Times -Advocate, March 18, 1981 By ELAINE TOWNSHEND Writers certainly don't pen songs the way they used to. When I was a teen ager, I was influenced by tunes with unforgettable melodies and deep meaningful lyrics. Today, in moments of solitude, the haunting phrases flit through my mind once more. "Dum dum a diddly dum. What I say? Dum dum a diddly dum. Oh yea! Dum dum a diddly dum." How could anyone forget such thought-provoking lyrics? "I met him on a Monday and my heart stood still. Da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron. Somebody told me that his name was Bill. Da doo ron ron ron, da doo ron ron.," It still brings tears to my FORTHCOMING MARRIAGE -Sandra Sprague and Peter Kleinstiver will begin o new life together by sharinr wedding vows a' cc A'.: .rto ', andra and Pc will be residing in Calgary, Alberta. Ontario Photo by Jack Doerr Officers for VON named at annual Victorian Order of Nurses, Perth -Huron Branch, annual meeting was held recently in the Kiwanis Community Centre, Stratford The gist speaker, Larry Parker, was unable to be present because of illness. However, Dave Evans discussed the work of Stratford's Ad Hoc Com- mittee for the Disabled. This committee is headed by ,the Reverend Faist. and .ii eludes Betty MacMillan, Dave Evans, several equalaction members, plus representatives from Spruce Lodge and the Mobility Bus. It deals with problems relating to curbing, width of doors, height of bank counters and telephones and so on - all matters vital to the disabled. One in ten persons is disabled. A film, "Different Approaches", distributed by the Canadian Human Rights Commission of Ottawa, was viewed. It was an amazing. revealing and impressive film not only of the predicaments of the ban -4 `- dicapped, but also of their assets, skills, and depen- dability. President Ken Thrasher presided over the. business meeting. Reports from the various officers were given and accepted. The Report of the Nursing Services for 1980 was given by nurse -in -charge Gwen Berry. There were 22,858 visits to 1,240 individual patients representing an increase of 1,316 visits and 87 individual patients over 1979. Ninety-five percent of all Please turn to page 8 Good old songs eyes, and speaking of tears.,: "It's my party and I'll cry if I want to Cry if 1 want to, Cry if I want to; You would cry, too, if it happened to you." Some musical questions have yet to be answered: "Who put the bop in the bop shu bop shu bop? Who put the wham in the wham a wham a ding dong?" Background singers were vital in those days. This was never more apparent than in one of my all-time favourites "The Lion Sleeps at Night", in which the pulse of the jungle was brought alive with a continuous chorus of... "Weem-a-whip; a-weem-a- whip; a-weem-awhip; a- weem-a-whip."' Classic stories were told, such as "I'm Henry VIII, I am; Henry VIII, I am, I am; I got married to the woman next door She's been married seven times before, And everyone was a Henry, She wouldn't have a Willie or a Sam I'm her eighth old man; I'm Henry Henry VIII, I am." The following is a list of song titles that still tease my brain: Witch Doctor; Do I Rat Now; Hot Pastrami; Yakety Sax; Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weeny Yellow Polka Dot Bikini; Walkin' My Cat Named Dog; Bird Dog; Roll Over, Beethoven; Don't you Step on myBlue SuedeShoes; Gonna Buy Me a Dog, and One -eyed One -horned Flyin' Purple People Eater. An old favourite, On Top of Old Smokey, was moder- nized and became a popular sing -along: "On top of spaghetti, all covered with cheese, ' lost my poor meatball, when somebody sneezed. It rolled off the table and onto the floor And then my poor meatball rolled out the door. It rolled in the garden and under a bush An then my poor meatball was nothing but moosh. The moosh was as tasty as tasty could be And early next summer it grew into a tree The tree was all covered with beautiful moss It grew lovely meatballs and tomato sauce... So if you eat spaghetti, all The Final Touch For Your Spring Fashions... Songs like that still choke me up, . Writers always try to reflect the mood of the times through their songs, and a few years ago this tune brought music lovers to their feet: "Here he comes There he goes And he ain't wearin' no clothes... Oh, yes, they call him The Streak He likes to show off his physique. Odds'n ends When there's an audience to be found, He'll be streaking' around Causin' public critique." In recent years, I have bemoaned the lack of meaningful music on the airwaves. Writers just don't seem to write the way they did whenl was a teen. I had almost lost hope, until this morning. It was music to my ears: "What's a. matta you? Why you looka so sad? It's a not so bad. It's a nice -a place. Shut uppa your face!" ENGAGED - Mr.'and Mrs. D.M. Rhubarb is back It's time for Ontarians to enjoy fresh rhubarb and lettuce from Ontario's greenhouses. Buy some soon, urge marketing specialists at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food, because their season ends before May. First, a word about greenhouse rhubarb. It has a more delicate flavor and color than field rhubarb, which is available later in the spring. Shoppers should look for long, slender stalks with a rosy -pink color and yellowy -green leaves. Greenhouse rhubarb is easy to store, but you should plan to use it within a few days. Simply remove the leaves and the colorless tips. Place the stalks in a plastic. bag in the refrigerator. To help preserve their freshness, wash and cut the stalks only just before using. • • • • • • t • • • • • • • ••••• • ••• 200 OFF EVERYTHING IN THE STORE (except patterns) P0Iha•'Dot Open 9 to 5:30; Friday till 9 ••••••••••••••I • • • • • • • HURON -PERTH COUNTY ROMAN CATHOLIC SEPARATE SCHOOL BOARD Kindergarten Registration Our Lady of Mount Carmel School Mr. Gary Birmingham, Principal RR No.3 Dashwood, Ontario Telephone No. 237-3337 • 2nd April, 1981 - 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Kindergarten children need to be 5 years of age on or before 31st December, 1981.
