By ROSS HAUGH
The 1980-81 hockey season may really seem long to
the executive of the South Huron hockey league and
president John Stephens in particular.
The league executive has spent many hours in
dealing with player eligibilities and has ruled with an
iron hand in suspending teams and players.
It all started more than a month ago when at least
four players on the Parkhill Merchants roster were
deemed to be illegal and one of the Forest Boyds was
in a similar situation.
The Parkhill team was suspended for the balance
of the season and all points and statistics were wiped
out
Then a week ago, a discrepancy was found in the
playing card of Glenn Nicholson of the Zurich
Buckeyes.
It appears that the address showing on Nicholson's
driver's licence was not the same as his actual
residence which put him outside the legal area for the
Buckeyes to draw players.
The league constitution calls for a copy of player's
driving licence to be attached to his playing card for
purpose of establishing residence.
As a result of the latest infraction, Nicholson was
suspended for the balance of the season and all points
won by the Buckeyes in which he played were stricken
from the records.
Also. the Zurich representative on the league ex-
ecutive was suspended until at least the end of the first
round of playoffs.
These reprimandatory actions may sound severe.
but. all have been dealt with in the same manner ac-
cording to the league constitution.
We know that the executive and president
Stephens will be receiving a lot of criticism, but• hope
they stand up for the league's rights and continue to
operate a top notch organization.
The league executive is in an unique position that
they don't have any higher body like the OHA or CAHA
to look for in getting any guidance.
All the decisions are made at the local level and
this probably is the best way to operate.
The South Huron league since it's inception some
eight years ago has operated on the same high prin-
ciples anowe would certainly hope they continue to do
so.
Congratulations
Although they failed to survive the first round of
playoffs in Huron -Perth Conference basketball ranks.
the South Huron senior Panthers compiled their best
record in many years.
The Panthersonlylost one game during the regular
schedule as they finished on top. Their only loss was to
the Goderich Vikings in overtime at the South Huron
gym about a month ago.
Coach Terry O'Rourke called this year's senior
boys team as the hardest working he had ever coached
at South Huron.
The most impressive statistics for thePanthersthis
year were not found on the scoreboard, but• were
registered on the performance chart.
In particular in a come -from -behind 51-46 win over
Listowel to clinch a playaff spot, the chart indicated
that South Huron had outrebounded a much taller and
stronger Listowel team.
The Listowel coach was so impressed with this
dimension of the South Huron game that he asked
coach O'Rou.rke what rebounding drills he used in
practice.
The improvedPanther reboundinggame is a major
reason for the team's success this season.
Congratulations. fellows for a great season and
next year should he better than ever.
While passing out acolades we shouldn't forget the
Exeter junior Hawks. This club showed tremendous
fight in coming back from a three game deficit to win
two straight and then match the Mitchell Hawks stride
for stride before bowing out in overtime.
TheHawksare nowevenwith namesakes in Mitchell
oyer the past four years of playoffs win which each
club has won twice.
Coach Ron Bogart has not decided about his being
back tor next year. but, we would guess he will take
another crack at trying to outfox Bob Zimmer. his
coaching rival in Mitchell.
'I'he Exeter club should he a strong contender for
the league and provincial championships next year as
only three of this year's players will be lost due to
overage
The three are Ron Bilke. Dennis Preszcator and
Brad Taylor All have played on two provincial cham-
pions during their minor hockey career.
Could surprise some people
A teww weeks ago on Hockey Night in Canada Don
Cherry made a sort of uncomplimentary remark about
Wayne Gretzky of the Edmonton Oilers who is current-
ly leading the NHL in scoring.
We would guess that Cherry would be pleased to
retract his statement in the next month if the Edmon-
ton club tails to make the playoffs.
Cherry has been named coach of the NHL team
which will represent Canada in world competition in
April and only players from teams missing the
playoffs will be available
Gretzky's presence would not only give the Cana-
dian club some dignity but a better than average
chance of being right in contention.
The young star from 13rantford is the type of
player well suited for international play. His
stickhandling ability and puck control would be a great
asset.
In addition. the Europeans are well known for
their grabbing and clutching and Gretzky gets plenty
of that in the NI11, from players frustrated in failing to
stop him with legal methods.

The event, sponsored by

developed by Lois and the

area curlers and Exeter
residents. Under their
guidance, the bonspiel was
founded to provide newer
curlers with an opportunity
to enjoy the game under
circumstances that en-
courage fellowship rather

The present organizers,
Don and Helene Cameron,
are looking forward to the
