Playhouse announces 10th season
Not wanting to tamper
with success, Huron Country
Playhouse artistic director
Aileen Taylor -Smith has
followed a format similar to
Iast season's in this year's
line-up of plays. Last year
the season opened with the
classic Private Lives,
followed by the Neil Simon
comedy The Sunshine Boys,
after which came the
popular Same Time, Next
Year, followed by a new
Canadian play Free At Last,
and concluded with the big
time musical Annie Get Your
Gun.
Keeping that hit season in
mind, Ms. Taylor -Smith
planned her second year as
artistic director. This year
the season will open July 1
with a classic musical The
Fantasticks. The second
play of the summer will be
Neil Simon's recent hit
Chapter Two. Then the
season moves to Arsenic
and OId Lace, a long Ume
favourite with live theatre.
After that we'll see another
new Canadian offering,
Nurse Jane Goes to Hawaii,
and this summer will wrap
up with the big musical hit
The Muslc Man.
The new season was an-
nounced by the playhouse
Wednesday at a press party
held at Sanders Tavern. At
the same time plans for
special events and fund
raising activities were
revealed.
This season marks the
tenth anniversary of the
playhouse. Ms. Taylor -Smith
said that more celebrations
marking the playhouse's
first decade will be an-
nounced later.

Castings for the shows
have not yet been an-
nounced. Only one director
was named.
Ken Livingstone will be
directing the Fantasticks. It
was first performed in the
big tent at Huron Country
Playhouse In 1973, and was
the first musical ever done at
the playhouse.
The Fantasticks is a
musical fable about a young
man and the girl next door,
whose parents have built a
for starting a brass band. He
sell the instruments and
uniforms, then skips town
without teaching a note of
music. Favourite songs such
as "76 Trombones" come
from The Music Man.
The committee in charge
of the W. Eric McIlroy
Memorial will be using the
playhouse June 6 to start the
1980 season. A special
evening in honour of the
late Eric Mcllroy is planned.
On June 13, the annual
Monte Carlo night will at-
tract crowds to the black
jack tables. Then a very
special night is planned with
the group Canadian Brass in
concert on June 20. The
quintet has toured North
America extensively and
even performed in China and
Japan. In May 1978 they
made history as the first
Canadianclassical group to
open a Broadway run, with
their comic western "opera"
Hornsmoke, written and
narrated by Peter Schickele.
July 20 will be the annual
Patron's Night, with a free
play ticket for all patrons,
and a midnight breakfast.
On August 2 the playhouse
will hold the fifth annual art
auction, and "challenge
auction".
Board representative
Adrian Bayley announced
the Wintario Arts Challenge.
He said that Huron Country
Playhouse was the smallest
theatre to be accepted by
Wintario for the challenge.
Wintario will match any
donations made to the
playhouse above and beyond
the usual donations, $2 for $1.
Bayley explained that the
playhouse hopes to raise
$333,333 over three years
which would bring the
playhouse nearly $1 million.
Bayley said that govern-
ment grants will become
increasingly difficult to
obtain, and that the Wintario
Arts Challenge will help
make the playhouse self
supporting, if the one-third
million dollars can be raised.
One of the fund raising
plans already announced is
the challenge auction. The
wall to keep them apart. The
youngsters, nevertheless
meet and fall in love. But
their parents have contrived
the feud to achieve a
marriage by negation. The
children discover the ruse,
and go their separate ways.
Chapter Two is the
autobiographical account of
Neil Simon's marriage to
actress Marsha Mason, only

months alter the death of his
much -loved first wife. This
touching comedy was a hit
movie last year.
Joseph Kesslering's
Arsenic and OId Lace is a
zany comedy of crazy
characters. One is Teddy

of his time under the im-
pression that he's really

then there are the sweet,
puttering Brewster sisters,
Abby and Martha, whose
lethal brew of arsenic,
strychnine, cyanide and
elderberry wine has never•
missed yet.
Nurse Jane Goes to Hawali
.was written by London
native Allan Stratton.
Stratton acted at Huron
Country Playhouse in . the
1973 version of The Fan-
tasticks. The play does not

NEW LOGO — Gwen Smithers-Kiar of Goderich won the Huron Country Playhouse logo
contest with her stylized initials. Presenting Ms. Smithers-Kiar with a life -time subscription to
the playhouse was board representative Adrian Bayley. Staff photo
playhouse will give a $3 bill
for each donation of $1.
These phony bills can be
used to purchase items at the
challenge auction. Bayley
said that other special fund
raising plans are in the
works.
Bayley also reported that
subscription sales are way
up over last year at this
time.

only 823 subscriptions had
been sold, and in 1979 there
were only 664 subscribers at
this time. Bayley said they
hope to have over 2200
subscribers this year.
A subscription costs $30 for
the five plays. A youth

New logo wins woman
lifetime subscription
A Goderich woman will be
able to enjoy attending
Huron Country Playhouse
for the rest of her life,
thanks to her artistic talent.
Gwen Smithers-Kiar had
the winning design in a re-
cent logo contest held by the
playhouse. Ms. Smithers-
Kiar won a life time sub-
scription to the theatre for
her efforts.
The playhouse asked the
public to submit designs for
a new logo last December.
Until now, the playhouse had
no symbolic representation.
A sketch of the barn theatre
appeared on their
letterhead. but they wanted
a new and unique logo.
Ms. Smithers-Kiar com-
bined the initials HCP for
the' logo. The letter "C"
forms sound waves and
musical notes, symbolic of
the theatre.
Ms. Smithers-Kiar has had
extensive training in art and
graphics. and has w rked in
art departments for various
companies. At present she
operates a free-lance art
studio in her home in
Goderich, but spends most
of her time looking after her
family. She is married with
two small children.
She says she would like to
re-enter the work force
when her children are older.
She said that winning the
logo contest will give her a
boost when that time comes.
She is looking forward to
