Deane & Laughton Solicitors for the executor, Exeter, Ontario 7:8 9c Mail survey As part of the first com- prehensive review of private land forests in Ontario, the Ministry of Natural Resources will be conduc- ting a mail survey of Ontario rural landowners, including those in the Wingham District (Huron and Perth Counties, and Huron, Minto, Kinloss, Culross and Carrick Townships). This questionnaire is designed to gather informa- tion on attuta and objec- tives of woodland owners, extent and type of forest management activities be- ing carried out, and familiarity of landowners with provincial government woodland management in- centive programs. Certain statistical infor- mation, such as potential for reforestation on private rural land, will also be collected by the survey. With increasing emphasis on management of all types of natural resources, this study is timely. As much as 30tt of wood produced in On- tario comes from private lands as opposed to Crown lands. Woodlots in the Wingham District help supply high value hardwood timber used by the region's important furniture manufacturing and other wood -using industries. Private woodlots in this area serve many other im- portant functions such as regulation of stream levels, protection of crops, soil and buildings from wind damage, enhancement of landscape beauty, habitat for wildlife, all of which are important to the farm com- munity. Easter Seals - new name The oldest and largest children's charity in Canada is changing its public iden- tification from the 'Ontario Society for Crippled Children' to The Easter Seal Society. Formed by ten service clubs in 1922 to co-ordinate and develop provincially the services rendered by the clubs locally, the Society has developed to embrace 236 service clubs across Ontario and now serves more than 6,- 000 families of physically handicapped children. The significant changes from the former name to the current name is the dropping of the word 'crippled.' "There has been growing concern about retaining a name which appeared to at- tach a label to the disabled individual", said Ian Bain, executive director of the Society. "Parents of disabl- ed children and older disabl- ed persons have expressed their regret at our retention of the word 'crippled'. "The Society's decision to change its public name was not made lightly". according to Bain. "With a record of nearly 60 years' service to the families ,of disabled children in Ontario, the dropping of a familiar name was of considerable concern but the English language is dynamic and a word which was readily acceptable in the past may now have un- pleasant connotations," Bain said. "The fact that 1981 is the International Year of Disabled Persons - with its theme 'Full participation and equality' - made 1981 an appropriate time for the change" he said. While the Society will maintain the registration of its original name to protect future bequests, it will use the name 'The Easter Seal Society' in all publications, printed matter and fund- raising materials. The Easter Seal campaign was introduced in Ontario in 1947 and is the main fund-raising program of the Society. The 1981 appeal in Ontario will be held from March 16 to April 19 with a provincial goal of $3 million. The Easter Seal Society provides a consultative nur- sing service to families across Ontario, annual diagnostic clinics in northern communities and much of the equipment - wheelchairs, braces, Township of Stephen 1981 Dog Tags Are Available At The Township Office, Crediton 1st Dog Each Additional Dog Kennel License After May 1st, 1981: 1st Dog Each Additional Dog $8.00 $15.00 each $25.00 $12.00 $22.00 each Dog owners are reminded to keep their dogs under control at all times. Allan Nicholson, Road Superintendent, Egmondville, Ontario 527-1838 crutches and artificial limbs - used by disabled children. The Society owns and operates five camps at Lon- don. Port Colborne, Perth, Kirkland Lake and Collingwood where more than 1.000 disabled children spend summer holidays. The Society also provides sub- stantial support for the On- tario Crippled Children's Centre. the Conn Smythe Research Foundation and the Blissymbolics Com- munication Institute. Bain said that questions have been asked about the potential effect of a name change on the Society's fund- raising appeal. "If donors know how important this change is to the families and children we serve, we are confident that they will ap- prove the change and con- tinue their support," he said.
