This is an increase of three percent over the 1980 con- tract. Collections are made once a week during the winter while during the summer months commercial pickups are increased to six each week. This represents about 79 percent of the first in- stalment payable of 8108,434.89. The next interim payment is due on May 14. The township of Hay has approved a retainer fee of 81,500 for 1981 for services of the Grand Bend fire department to cover a designated area of that municipality. A sign permit application from Grand Cove Estates was approved. It will be placed on property owned by Grand Cove. Marie and George Chowen visited last Monday with her mother, Mrs. Alice Aikens at the Nursing home in Mit- chell, and they also called to visit friends Mr. & Mrs. Edwin Rose in the Mitchell area. Lorne and Loreen Devine visited Friday evening with Hugh and Annie Morenz. Sunday dinner guests with Mr. Susie Devine, were Mr. & Mrs. Ervin Devine and Mr. & Mrs. Elgin Adams. Mrs. Lillian Brown spent the weekend in Toronto visiting with her daughter Alice Brown. Lillian's sister, Mrs. Stella Kerr, of Sarnia stayed with Mr. Baker. Thirteen answered the roll call by bringing in scrap books. President, Betty Camp- bell, conducted the business. Millie Desjardine had the worship and study period on missionaries in South America. A work period followed putting cards in scrap books for War Memorial hospital. Lunch hostess Marian Steckle served Valentine cookies. Last Friday afternoon, representatives from the local churches met at the Church of God to plan for the World's Day of Prayer to be held on March 6 at the Church of God. Last Saturday,21 Church of God youths and leaders attended a youth rally in Hartford. Guest speaker was Mrs. Evelyn Krueger on a theme of love. A bylaw setting the sewer discharge rates was amended reducing the rate from 150 percent to 91.1 percent of the water charges. Council turned down an application by Bob Wright to construct a sign on village property adjacent to the Bank of Montreal. Wright was representing a parachutist group wanting to advertise their activities on the beach this summer. Councillor Harold Green commented during the discussion, "It's our same age old problem. If we give you a permit, how can we refuse anyone else." Reeve Bob Sharen pointed out that present signs for Southcott Pines and the Starlite Drive Inn theatre have been up for a long time. Sharen said if the request was for a sign on private 'property that would be a different story with only a permit being necessary. A resolution from the town of Rockland for continuation of federal grants for sewer and water projects was supported. The government's Com- munity Seryices Con- tribution program of 50 percent assistance for such projects was ended on November 12 of last year. Reeve Sharen said, "We should endorse this resolution to help those communities not as for- tunate as us. We received this aid for our sewer con- struction." A letter was read from the Lambton branch of the Canadian Cancer Society thanking council for their help in last year's daffodil campaign. Daffodils will be offered for sale to businesses on Friday, April 3 and to the public in shopping areas on April 4. Councillor Dennis Snyder reported that an aerial photo and a physical survey of the layout of the land of the village's waste disposal site was necessary before a Pits and Quarries licence couls be obtained. Councillor Snyder told council that the village animal control officer will be making her rounds once every two weeks. Snyder said he was getting prices on thermostats for the municipal offices to cut temperatures at night and automatically increase heat in the morning. A resolution from the region of Hamilton - Wentworth was read and filed. It called for sentences of not less than 20 years for persons convicted of crimes while using firearms.
