All of the teams present represented Optimists or service clubs. Some of the clubs had their own hockey teams which play in regular leagues, while other groups put together teams for the tournament. There were 12 teams present. Tournament champions were the Optimists of New Hamburg. They took home a cheque for $250. They beat runners-up Point Edward Optimists in a close match which ended in a 3-2 victory Good turnout for Chamber About 22 turned up for the February meeting of the Grand Bend and area Chamber of Commerce. Secretary -manager Robert Simpson said that he was very pleased with the turn- out on such as cold night. The meeting was held at the Colonial Hotel. Guest speaker was Bill McEachern who talked on income tax problems, and gave advice for tax audits. Much of the meeting was spent discussing the school study committee, and the chamber's report to the Grand Bend (SETOC) School is Essential to Our Com- munity committee. The Chamber members were unanimous in their decision to support the local school. Most businesses said that they would suffer if the Grand Bend school was closed. The next meeting will be March 17. Burger fest plans will be on the agenda at that time. of New Hamburg. The Point Edward team received a cheque for $150. The Forest Optimists took the consolation cham- pionship. Runners-up in the B division were the Watford Optimists. Forest was given $150, while Watford received $125. Grand Bend was well - represented with two teams playing. The Optimists easily put together a team, as most of their members play on the Thompson - Warner Old Timers. The Grand Bend Lions were able to come up with a good team, with help from members of the Arkona Lions and the Zurich Lions. All players had to be members of service clubs. Other Optimist teams included Bluewater, of the Sarnia area, Forest, Thedford, Point Edward, Tavistock, Goderich, Oakridge, Stephen, New Hamburg. and Watford. The tournament wrapped up with a successful dance Saturday night at the arena. Entertainment was by a disc jockey, Terry Liebelt. Both Grand Bend goals were scored late in the third period by Pete Haist and Kevin McKinnon. Ralph Campbell was called on a hooking penalty, while Steve Kadlecik sat out two minutes for tripping. When asked about the reasons for their loss, the Optimists cited late night festive activities at the arena Friday. The Lions went on to play Point Edward Optimists after their win over Grand Bend Optimists. Point Edward trounced the local crew in a 6-2 victory. Both Grand Bend goals were scored in the third period. Rob Anderson had an unassisted counter, followed by a goal from Steve Kadlecik, assisted by Ralph Campbell.
