New Hamburg wins
No hit hockey successful
The Thedford-Bosanquet
arena was a beehive of ac-
tivity this weekend when the
Grand Bend Optimists
sponsored their first annual
no -hit invitational hockey
tournament. All of the teams
present represented
Optimists or service clubs.
Some of the clubs had their
own hockey teams which
play in regular leagues,
while other groups put
together teams for the
tournament. There were 12
teams present.
Tournament champions
were the Optimists of New
Hamburg. They took home a
cheque for $250. They beat
runners-up Point Edward
Optimists in a close match
which ended in a 3-2 victory
Good turnout
for Chamber
About 22 turned up for the
February meeting of the
Grand Bend and area
Chamber of Commerce.
Secretary -manager Robert
Simpson said that he was
very pleased with the turn-
out on such as cold night. The
meeting was held at the
Colonial Hotel.
Guest speaker was Bill
McEachern who talked on
income tax problems, and
gave advice for tax audits.
Much of the meeting was
spent discussing the school
study committee, and the
chamber's report to the
Grand Bend (SETOC) School
is Essential to Our Com-
munity committee.
The Chamber members
were unanimous in their
decision to support the local
school. Most businesses said
that they would suffer if the
Grand Bend school was
closed.
The next meeting will be
March 17. Burger fest plans
will be on the agenda at that
time.
of New Hamburg. The Point
Edward team received a
cheque for $150.
The Forest Optimists took
the consolation cham-
pionship. Runners-up in the
B division were the Watford
Optimists. Forest was given
$150, while Watford received
$125.
Grand Bend was well -
represented with two teams
playing. The Optimists
easily put together a team,
as most of their members
play on the Thompson -
Warner Old Timers. The
Grand Bend Lions were able
to come up with a good team,
with help from members of
the Arkona Lions and the
Zurich Lions. All players had
to be members of service
clubs.
Other Optimist teams
included Bluewater, of the
Sarnia area, Forest,
Thedford, Point Edward,
Tavistock, Goderich,
Oakridge, Stephen, New
Hamburg. and Watford.
The tournament wrapped
up with a successful dance
Saturday night at the arena.
Entertainment was by a disc
jockey, Terry Liebelt.
In the first game Friday
night, Grand Bend Optimists
trounced the Bluewater
Optimists 8-3. Tony Mennen
led the scoring with an assist
from Shane Burley. Gary
Chalmers followed with an
assist from Percy Parker
and Mennen. Then Don
Labelle scored an unassisted
goal to wrap up the first
period.
Goals in the second period
were scored by Mennen with
an assist from John Russell.
Then Parker scored twice on
shots from Chalmers.
In the third stanza,
Chalmers scored again ,vith
an assist going to Mennen,
and Mennen ended the
scoring in an unassisted
goal.
The Grand Bend team only
took two penalties in the
game. Chalmers sat out two
minutes for tripping, and
Don Labelle did the same.
In game two, the Grand
Bend Lions team beat out the
Forest Optimists 2-1. Both
Grand Bend goals were
scored late in the third
period by Pete Haist and
Kevin McKinnon.
Ralph Campbell was
called on a hooking penalty,
while Steve Kadlecik sat out
two minutes for tripping.
Because both Grand Bend
teams won their first games,
they were matched up for
game eight. In a surprise
game,the Lions beat the
Optimists 4-3.
Playing for the Lions Steve
Kadlecik led the scoring with
an assist from Ralph
Campbell. Frank Smeekens
for the Optimists answered
with a goal on an assist from
Hans DeJong.
The Optimists scored the
only goal of the second
period on a shot from
DeJong. Assists came from
Bill Uniac and Keith
Crawford.
In the third period the
Lions retaliated with two
goals from Pat Bedard, both
assisted by Kadlecik. The
Optimists answered with a
goal by Tony Mennen from
Tim Connolly. Then the
Lions took the lead with a
counter from Kevin
McKinnon, from Pete Haist
and Kadlecik.
The only penalty of the
first period went to Optimist
Shane Burley for body
contact. Lion Pat Bedard
was penalized for hooking in
the second period, and Frank
Smeekens of the Optimists
had a holding penalty in the
third period.
Goalie for the Optimists
was Steve Fruin, while the
Lions' netminder was Joe
Arnold.
The Optimists were put out
of play after losing to the
Lions. When asked about the
reasons for their loss, the
Optimists cited late night
festive activities at the arena
Friday.
The Lions went on to play
Point Edward Optimists
after their win over Grand
Bend Optimists. Point
Edward trounced the local
crew in a 6-2 victory.
Both Grand Bend goals
were scored in the third
period. Rob Anderson had an
unassisted counter, followed
by a goal from Steve
Kadlecik, assisted by Ralph
Campbell.
Campbell received a
tripping penalty and Jerry
Beernink was given a
penalty for elbowing in that
game.
The lass to Point Edward
put the Grand Bend Lions out
of action. Point Edward went
on to play New Hamburg for
the finals.
Final figures on how much
money was raised by the
Grand Bend Optimists
haven't yet been tallied. The
Optimists are sponsoring a
cross-country ski loppet at
Pinery Park this weekend.
