RECORD YEAR
Records fell by the
wayside for the 1980-81
tederal-provincial crop in-
surance program according
to preliminary figures
released recently.
About 114.000 farmers
purchased crop insurance
tor the 1980-81 crop year.
Coverage exceeded $2
billion for the first time in
the history of the program.
Total premiums amounted
to more than $200 million
with the federal contribution
surpassing the $100 million
mark.
Preliminary figures also
indicate a record payout dur-
ing 1980-81 due largely to last
years drought in western
Canada. Total indemnities
rose from $204.1 million in
1979-80 to $2:34.7 million this
year.
Nationally, more money
was paid out to farmers for
crop losses than was
collected in premiums.
Indemnities exceeded
premiums by about $34
million.
