Spotlight
By ROSS HAUGH
It's all over for another year and the Exeter
Lions club are to be congratulated on their efforts in
sponsoring another successful Sportsmen's dinner.
The South Huron Rec Centre was bulging at the
seams with more than 600 persons. The first time in
it's eight year history was the dinner a complete
sellout and then some.
The big winners of course are the crippled children
not only at the Thames Valley Treatment Centre in
London. but, those less fortunate in this immediate
area.
For the second year in succession, crippled
children were represented by one of our own
youngsters, Christine Easterbrook.
Christine again spoke very well and won the hearts
of all the celebrities in attendance.
It is expected that some $6,000 will be realized for
the crippled children cause and this should increase
the overall eight year total to close to $30,000.
As one of the speakers said "I didn't know where
Exeter was before this week, but, I sure will
remember."
If there was a disappointment in any of the
speakers it had to be the headliner Dick Vitale, former
great basketball coach at high school and college
levels and then the Detroit Pistons of the NBA.
Granted Vitale is a great orator, but, his thoughts
jumped all over the place and he really did not have
any message to deliver.
If the speakers were rated we would go with Jean
Beliveau, Lori Baier and Don Cherry in that order.
These three talked about their sport and what most
people wanted to hear.
Jean Beliveau in talking about the problems of the
Montreal Canadiens this year said the club doesn't
have what Frank Selke started in 1945 when he joined
the team.
He added, "Salke built the long Montreal dynasty
on reserves and good draft choices. Most of our cham-
pionships were won by super bench strengh."
Beliveau continued, "These days you can't afford
to make a bad draft pick. In the old days there were
only six teams. Now with 21 temas in the draft you
have to be right on and don't usually get much in your
third choices on because the quality goes down after
the first 30 or 40."
Lori Baier who has become one of Canada's top
figure skaters along with her partner Lloyd Eisler out-
lined some of her training schedules.
She said while four to•six hours each day are spent
on the ice, the off -ice training is also very vigorous.
One of the training specialities of their coach Kerry
Leitch is running up and down stairways in the Preston
arena.
Lori continued, "There are 22 steps in each aisle
and by the time we reach our training peak we actually
do 6,600 steps in 50 minutes of continual running."
The Baier-Eisler combination won silver medals
during the last two months in the world's junior com-
petition and the Canadian seniors.
Terry Puhl of Melville, Saskatchewan, one of the
very few Canadians in major league baseball other
than pitchers talked about future of Houston Astros
pitcher J.R. Richard.
Richard, who almost lost his life early in the 1980
season with a stroke is back throwing again and could
be back in the regular Houston pitching rotation by
mid-season.
He apparently hasn't regained full strength in his
left arm and the team is concerned about him protec-
ting himself on any balls hit back to the mound.
One of the greatest pleasures we had Tuesday
night was talking to Dunc Campbell of Ailsa Craig, one
of the early harness horse racing enthusiasts in the
area
Dunc who will be 81 years of age on July 14 of this
year was at the dinner with his grandson John
Campbell who last year was the winningest driver in
North America with earnings in excess of " three
million dollars.
Uunc said he remembers racing at the Exeter
t rack in about 1935 with Babe Grattan. This horse is
one of only two he ever purchased and was the founda-
tion for his well known Argyle pacers.
The .Ailsa Craig veteran driver still trains horses
on a regular basis with his son Jack who was also at
the dinner making it three generations of Campbell's
in attendance.
One of the other lesser known visitors at the dinner
was Doug Melvin of the New York Yankees. Melvin
who spent four years in minor baseball is now a batting
practice pitcher and statistician for the New York
team
His job during a game is to record every type of
pitch thrown by the Yankee hurlers. He told us at the
earlier press conference, "We have a complete chart
on every hitter in the American league against each
pitcher he has faced."
Melvin situated behind the plate is also in direct
contact with the dugout and coach Yogi Berra in keep-
ing outfielders in their proper spot for each hitter.
Ile added, "Sometimes an outfielder may have
just struck out at the plate and when he gets back to
his position he may be daydreaming a bit and be in the
wrong spot. It may be only be a couple of feet, but, that
sometimes is enough to let a 'base hit fall in."
Don Cherry was a very affable guest and took a
personal interest in the people he was signing an
autograph for At the press conference he was asked
by our business manager Dick Jongkind to pose for a
picture for his father. Later at the dinner when he ran
across Dick. Cherry said, "Say hello to your father."
Start in Exeter, Friday
All Hawks semi-final
The Exeter Hawks had
their wish come true this
week as they ended up
against their namesakes
from Mitchell in the first
round of the northern
division Junior "D" playoffs.
Mitchell ended up in
second place after tying
Tavistock in a crucial game,
Friday, while the Lucan
Irish battled their way to the
top of the loop by beating
Exeter and Seaforth in their
final two games.
The Irish will meet the
Tavistock Braves in the
other semi-final best -of -
seven.
The Hawks were hoping to
meet Mitchell as they had
enjoyed more success
against their arch -rivals
than the other two teams.
Exeter won both home
games, the last one by a 10-2
verdict, and gained one tie in
their two games in Mitchell.
They lost the other game
away from home in the final
minute.
Both teams have been
inconsistent throughout the
season. Mitchell led the loop
most of the season, but hit a
tail -spin near the end to drop
back to second place behind
Lucan.
The series opens in Exeter
this Friday and moves back
to Mitchell for a Sunday
contest at 2:00 and again
Tuesday night at 8:30.
Exeter hosts the next two
games on the following
Friday and Sunday due to a
lack of ice time in Mitchell.
The final two games will be
in Mitchell if the series goes
the full seven games.
Exeter lost their final two
games of the season to end

Congratulations
Congratulations are in order for a former resident
of this area. Craig Chapman. Craig now lives in
Forest. and recently coached the 'B' division
Firemen's atom hockey team to the North American
silver stick championship. The boys were undefeated
in the tournament, which was held in Sarnia.
The whole team played exceptionally well, but, the
star was young Rusty Colman who scored all 13 of
Forest's goals in the tourney, Rusty will be a player to
'watch in the next few years.
