Greens lead Lucan rec

Again this week the Lucan
Rec League has a new
leader. The previous front
running Blues went down to
an 8-6 defeat at the hands of
Hagens Hackers.
The Greens took over sole
possession of first place with
a 5-4 victory over the Reds.
In the Blues -Hackers
game both teams blew leads
before the Hackers scored
five consecutive third period
goals.
The Hackers built up a 3-1
lead only to have the Blues
comeback with 5 consecutive
goals of their own.
Rick Thomas opened the
scoring for the Hackers
when he converted passes
from Brad Taylor and Gary
Isaac.
Isaac increased the lead
when he scored on an
unassisted powerplay goal.
The Blues narrowed the
lead when they scored on a
The Centralia College
Saints gained one victory in
three starts this week in the
South Huron intermediate
hockey league.
The only victory was by a
4-3 score over the Centralia
Marauders while the defeats
were 7-1 to the Parkhill
Merchants and 5-4 to
Goderich.
In the loss to Goderich the
Saints started quickly with a
goal from the stick of Ed
Michniewicz on a pass from
Tim Breedon.
Before the first period
ended Tom O'Brien tied the
score for Goderich.
In the second period, Doug
Smith and Phil Petrie
counted for Goderich in the
first .minute of play and
Michniewicz came back for
the Saints on passes from
John Jonger and Lloyd
Holdbrook.
Each team scored two
goals in the final 20 minutes
of play as the Saints fell one
goal short of even terms.
Ed Michniewicz completed
the hat trick performance as
he scored on a pass from
Dave McFadden who scored
the other goal on an
unassisted effort.
The final period Goderich
marksmen were Len Kolk-
man and John Hoy.
The only goal for the Saints
in the 7-1 Toss to Parkhill
came from the stick of
captain Ken Vanos on passes
from Ed Michniewicz and
Mike Sadler.

The Hackers increased the
lead to 3-1 on Gary Isaac's

The Lucan Irish scored
two weekend wins over the
Mitchell Hawks to move
within one point of the se-
cond place Mitchell club in
the OHA Western Junior
"D" standings.
The Tavistock Braves are
in first place in the northern
division with 40 points, the
Mltchell Hawks are second
with 38 points and the Irish
right behind with 37 points.
The Irish downed the
Hawks 3-1 in Lucan Friday
night and came right back
with a 5-2 victory in Mitchell
Sunday afternoon. In a
Wednesday contest, Port
Stanley edged the Irish 5-3.
In Sunday's game two
quick goals in last two
minutes of the first period
put the Irish in front to stay
after Mitchell scored the
first goal of the game on a
shot by Doug Dietz, Jamie
Shipley tied the score at
18:19 on passes from Jeff
Edwards and John Medd
and Paul Medd scored a
minute later on a pass from
Brian Murray.
The only goal of the second
period was shot by Dean
Densmore of Lucan on a
three-way combination with
Bob Hodgins and Jeff
Edwards.
Paul Medd put the Irish
ahead 4-1 at 5:14 of the third
period as he converted a
pass from Brian Murray.
Later in the period Doug
Dietz collected his second
goal for Mitchell and Kevin
Harwick ended the scoring
for the Irish on a pass from
Brian Murray.
In Friday's game most of
the scoring came in the third
period. The first goal came
at 7:10 of the opening session
when Jeff Marshall hit the
Mitchell net on a three-way
effort with Kevin Hartwick
and Doug Latta.
At the halfway mark of
the third period Jeff Hart-
man made it 2-0 for Lucan on
passes from Paul Medd and
Murray.
Ron Glenn counted for the
Irish on passes from Doug
Latta and Kevin Hartwick
before Duncan Ferguson
registered the only Mitchell
.goal.
In the Wednesday loss to
Port Stanley. the Lucan
goals were fired by Paul
Medd. Jeff Hartman and
Jamie Shipley.

Blues comeback with help
from Stan McNiff.
Brad England came right
back to tie the score when he
finished off a play started by
Hackney.
Blue's defenceman Bruce
Cornish gave the Blues the
lead for the first time when
he converted a Jim Hearn
pass.
Brad England opened the
third period scoring with a
solo effort and shortly after,
Gord Moon increased the
lead to 6-3 scoring on a solo
effort of his own.
The Hackers then mounted
their winning comeback
when Brad Taylor scored
with help from Gary Isaac.
Bill Darling brought the
Hackers within one on an
unassisted goal and Gary
Isaac came right back with
the tieing goal with Rick
Thomas and Taylor
assisting.
The winning goal came off
the stick of Don Murray with
Bill Haskett and Brett
Fairweather assisting.
Taylor added an insurance
goal with Isaac and
goaltender Wayne Parkinson
assisting.
In the second game the
Greens built up a 4-1 lead
then held on to stop a Reds
comeback and post a 5-4
victory.
Brian Noyes opened the
scoring when after taking a
pass from Mike Anderson,
rifled a shot past Red's
goaltender Don Coughlin.
Jeff Park increased the
lead shortly after when he
found the corner of the net
with a low shot with Noyes
and Greg Revington
assisting.
Marty Wraith finished off
the first period scoring with
an unassisted goal to give the
Greens a 3-0 lead.
The Red's finally solved
the problem of getting a puck
past Green's goaltender Bill
Boshart when Tom Hardy
found Mike Wraith in front of
the net whose hard shot
foundthe corner of the net.
Marty Wraith restored the
Greens three goal lead when
his clearing pass from
behind the net, hit a Red's
defender and went in off
Coughlin's skate.
Tom Hardy started the
third period off for the Reds
when he skated through the
Green's defenders, deked
Boshart and while air -
bourne, slid the puck into the
open net.
The Greens scored the
eventual winning goal when
Jeff Park after taking a pass
from Brian Noyes cut to the
corner of the net and slid a
pass to an unguarded Jim
Hodgins whose high shot beat
Coughlin cleanly.
The Reds fought back with
two goals late in the game to
make things close however
with Coughlin out of the net
for an extra attacker were
unable to score the
equalizer.
Ron Keys scored the first
goal converting a goal mouth
pass from Mike Wraith while
Rick Gwalchmai scored the
final goal with help from
Wraith.

North wins South Huron
A crowd of about 600
watched the North defeat the
south in the South Huron all-
star game Friday night in
Zurich.
The first period was
scoreless as both goalten-
ders turned in excellent
performances. There were
seven penalties handed out
in the first period, three
going to the North and four
going against the South.
The scoring did not start
until the 7:53 mark of the
second period when Tom
Ryan of Exeter scored on a
shot that was assisted by
Dave Kinsman of Hensall
and Mike Anstett of Exeter.
Three penalties came in the
second period, all going
against the North, but the
South could not put the puck
in the net.
In the third period, the
Northscoredagain, this time
off the stick of Ron
Corriveau of Goderich.
Gary Koehler and Jamie
Caldwell, both of Hensall,
assisted on the goal.
Less than a minute and a
half later Dave Kinsman
scored an unassisted goal.
There were five penalties,
four to the North and one to
the South.
The proceeds from the
game will go the the Big
Brothers and the South
Huron Hockey League. The
split is 60 per cent to Big
Brothers and 40 per cent to
the S.H.H.L. On hand to
offically start the game was
league president, John
Stephens and from the Big
Brothers, Jim Mulhern. Ron
Rader was the master of
ceremonies and league
statistician, Bob Somerville,
was the game announcer.
In league play, on Jan. 22,
Hensall played Forest in
Hensall and won by a score
of 6-4.
Hensall scored two first
period goals by Terry
Caldwell and Jamie Cald-
well. Steve Knight and
Jamie Caldwell assisted on
the first goal and the second
star tilt

In the second period, Fred
Knight scored on a pass from
Dave Ulrich and Bill Forbes
at 4:34.
The scoring came fast and
furious in the third period
when Rob Sullivan started it
at 9:27 on a pass from Henry
Veen.
Less than 20 seconds later,
Hensall was back in front on
a goal by Dave Kinsman,
assisted by Al Taylor and
Rick Ingram. At the 8:14
mark, Forest tied the score
on a goal by Dave Ulrich, his
second of the night.
Hensall scored the next
two goals, by Terry Caldwell
and Rick Ingram. Forest
scored with two minutes'
remaining from the stick of.
Fred Knight, but with just 13
seconds remaining in the
game, Terry Caldwell scored
to kill any chance of Forest .
tying the game.
Referees Iry Ford and
Wayne Corbett handed out 12
penalties in the game, eight
to the home town Sherwoods
and four to Forest.
