The Exeter midgets blew a
golden opportunity to wrap
up the Shamrock northern
division league leadership,
Monday, when they dropped
a 5-4 verdict in Ilderton.
A win would have moved
them out of range of the
second place St. Marys crew,
but the title will probably be
decided tonight (Wed-
nesday) when the midgets
travel to St. Marys for the
final game of the schedule.
They could win the title with
a tie, while a loss could leave
them in second place.
The locals jumped into a 4-
0 lead in the first period in
Ilderton, but then quit
skating and picked up a rash
of penalties to enable the
home crew to come up with
five unanswered tallies in
the final two periods to get
the win.
The loss was doubly severe
in that the team's top
defenceman, Jamie Chaffe,
suffered a shoulder injury
and could be sidelined for the
upcoming OMHA playoffs.
Scott Pincombe, Mark
Vandergunst, Dave
Underwood and Scott
Brintnell fired the goals for
Exeter with Pincombe ad-
ding two assists and singles
being contributed by
Brintnell and Paul Smale.
Exeter served 32 minutes
in penalties, compared to 18
for Ilderton.
The midgets opened the
week with a 5-3 win over
Ilderton in Wednesday's
regular triple -header at the
rec centre.
They spotted the visitors
an early one -goal lead but
came back with five un-
answered tallies and then
held on as Ilderton scored a
pair late in the third to make
the game close.
Mark Vandergunst scored
a pair to pace the attack,
with the singles going to
Mike Clark, Randy Ford and
Jim Siddall. Jeff Rowe
assisted on three of the
tallies. Clark picked up a
pair and singles were
recorded by Siddall, Dennis
McBride and Ford.
Sunday night, the locals
skated to a 6-2 triumph over
Goderich. They took a lead
in the first and were never
headed, being aided by 15
minor penalties picked up by
the visitors.
The scoring was shared by
Mike Clark, Jeff Rowe, Jim
Siddall, Mark Vandergunst,
Scott Pincombe and Scott
$rintnell. Clark, Paul Sinale
and Steve Prout had two
assist's each and singles
were added by I3rintnell and
Pincombe.
Bantams show well
The surging Exeter ban-
tams, winless in their first
12 games this season, are in
contention for division
honors in the annual Clinton
tournament.
The locals opened the tour-
nament. Thursday. with a 3-0
win over Mitchell and came
back Saturday morning to
post a' hard-fought 1-1 tie
with Belle River.
They return to action this
Saturday to face Kincardine
in the final game of their
four -team round-robin
series. The winner advances
against the other "13" round-
robin winner in the cham-
pionship game on Sunday.
Belle River also won 6-2
over Mitchell to leave them
tied with Exeter, although
they have a one -goal margin
in the goals for -and- against
system which would be used
to break a point tie. Kincar-
dine's entry downed Mitchell
6-3 and they tackle both Ex-
eter and Bell River on Satur-
day.
Scott Lovie, John Wells
and Steve Batten scored for
Exeter in the 3-0 win over
Mitchell. Picking up assists
were Steve Gould, Sean
Whiteford and Batten.
Rick Gilfillan played a
standout game in the nets
for Exeter to get the shutout
and he was brilliant again on
Saturday in helping his
mates to the draw with Belle
River.
The southern team opened
the scoring late in the first
period and Sean Whiteford
knotted the count in the third
- when he batted a puck into
the cage in a goal -mouth
scramble with linemates
Marty Taylor and Darren
Vandergunst.
In Wednesday's triple -
header at the rec centre, the
bantams picked up a 1-1 tie
against Ilderton. The teams
played scoreless hockey un-
til the third when Ilderton's
Mark Bannon gave them a 1-
0 lead, but Mike Tiedeman
evened the count with less
than five minutes remaining
when he took a pass from
Steve Gould and rifled a shot
from the top of the face-off
circle into the cage on a
powerplay effort.
Monday night, the ban-
tams travelled to Ilderton
and ended up on the short
end of a 4-1 verdict.
Steve Batten gave them an
early 1-0 lead when be broke
in alone to find an open
corner, but the hosts scored
two quick tallies near the end
of the stanza to take a lead
they never relinquished.
They added singles in each of
the second and third periods.
Waxers get split
Exeter novice goaltender
Harlen Tinney allowed only
one goal in two weekend
games, but his mates
couldn't find the scoring
range at all as they picked
up only one point out of a
possible four.
The single point came at
the rec centre. Sunday, when
the Waxers battled Parkhill
to a rare scoreless draw in
Shamrock action.
• Tinney and his Parkhill
counterpart. Clint McCann.
stopped every shot in their
direction although both
teams just missed on some
close plays that kept the
crowd excited in the
scoreless contest.
Saturday afternoon.
Lucan's Chris Welsh scored
in the final period to break a
scoreless game and give his
Lucan novice crew a 1-0 win
over Exeter.
Chris Sleaford picked up
the shutout for Lucan.
Playing in Parkhill,
Monday. the Waxers scored
a 2-1 verdict and Tinney
came within one second of
earning his second shutout of
the week.
Jeff McGee scored with
one second left in the game
to give Parkhill their lone
tally.
Alan Blommaert scored
both goals for Exeter, one in
the second and the other in
the third Mark Burton

ed a split in their two games
this week, posting a 7-4 win
over Ilderton, Wednesday,
and then ending up on the
short end of a 9-1 count
against Goderich at the rec
centre, Sunday.
The locals spotted Ilderton
an early 1-0 lead and then
came up with four in a row
in one of their best efforts of
the season.
Sean Whiteford paced the
Exeter attack with a hat
trick and added three assists
for a six -point night. Bob
Sims scored a pair and the
singles were fired by Tim
Moore and Bryan Quinn.
Jim Lewis contributed
three assists to the cause,
Lee Watt had a pair and a
single was recorded by
