Look back, ahead
Here we go with the first column for the year 1981
and we will be looking back to some of the highlights of
the past year and also look ahead as, to what may
happen in the next 12 months.
On .the local hockey season, the big accomplish-
ment in minor ranks was the OMHA championship
taken by the Exeter midgets. - -
Two members of this winning team. Dave Shaw
and Tom Coates are now valuable members of the
Stratford Cullitons, a junior '13. club.
The other title winning area team was the Lucan
pee wees in taking their championship in exciting
fashion. ^
The sporting year at South Huron District High
School was one,of. the best in many a moon.
The senior football Panthers won the Huron -Perth
championship with a final game victory over their
long-time rivals, the Goderich Vikings.

Great tourney
For anyone taking in the Boxing Day novice
hockey tournament at the South Hurt`n Rec Centre,
they certainly learned that the calibre of minor hockey
throughout the province should be good for a number
of years at least.
The brand of hockey turned in by these eight years
of age and under youngsters was outstanding.
The final 'A' game between Tillsonburg and
Oshawa was excellent with overtime needed to declare
a winner.
Terry Geoffrey of the champion Tillsonburg club
was one of the best individual players in the tourney.
Young Geoffrey scored his team's winning goal in
overtime and sent his grandparents from Zurich home
very happy.
Two other games went into overtime periods
which were scoreless and a five player shoot-out was
needed to declare a winner.
While Exeter Waxers lost to Strathroy in the
final, the locals won the hearts of the spectators with
their scrappy play. -
In their first outing the Waxers battled back from
a 4-1 deficit to Stoneybrook and won in an overtime-
shoot-out.
vertimeshoot-out.
The Waxers in their last two games scored only
two goals, but. had the happy faculty of keeping the
puck out of their own net.
All in all it was an excellent 'tourney and the Ex-
eter Minor Hockey association executive deserves a
lot of credit in sponsoring in this popular event.
Juniors are next
In the tournament department. eight junior `D'
clubs are next as they compete in the fourth annual
Exeter Hawks invitational.
It starts Saturday, January 10 at 12 noon at the
South Huron Rec Centre and concludes with the cham-
pionship game at 8 p.m. Sunday.
The first game at noon Saturday pits the Mitchell
Hawks against St. George while Thamesford and
Grand Valley tangle at 2:30.
At 5 p.m. the Lucan Irish take on Port Dover and
the host Exeter Hawks meet Stayner at 8 o'clock.
The three new teams this year are Staynor, Grand
Valley and Port Dover replacing Belmont. Fergus and
Meaford from last year.
The first three tournaments were won by Lucan,
Mitchell and Belmont.
Finally win roses
If at first you don't succeed try, try again. That
saying finally came true for the University of
Michigan football in Thursday's Rose Bowl game.
After seven straight losses. the U of M under
coach Bo Schembechler finally caught fire in the se-
cond half to beat Washington 23-6.
We caught the last quarter of the game on the car
radio and W.1R announcer Bob Ufer was almost
hysterical at the finish.
Ufer who has to be the most dedicated announcer
for his own team once said he was like a cat and hoped
his nine lives didn't run out before a Bowl victory final-
ly came.
He gets carried away completely whenever his
team scores a touchdown and his ecstatic pronuncia-
tion ik Meechigan."
Super Bowl next
More than a week ago we said rather jokingly to a
couple of our T-.\ colleagues that Oakland and Dallas
would he meeting in the Super Bowl on January 25.

both teams to stay in contention. hut. now that predic-
