1 Culture of Tomatoes.
(Contributed.)
Sultins plants itiAhc open field.
If you buy ,the Tomato plants be
sure to select those ayhich aro short
stout. hard, and of a dark green
color with a little anurplo streaked
on the b:lae of Shu glom. 1f they
are soft and of a light green color
they will be lou delicate and those
with yellowish green leaves are al-
ready in decline.
Not that you .(rave secured your
Plants. the next thin; is to mark
out your ground which has previous-
ly been tiro:mighty and repeatedly
cultivated.
The marking is done in the usual
way as for corn. The distance must
not be less dhoti i4 ft. or 4 fb 4 in.
each tray. In New Jersey avhere
large areas of tomatoes are grown
the planters mark out their ground
4 by 5 ft. Ibis mill :require about
2100 planta to the acre. Many set
tomatoes out 6 or even 6 ft. apart
when grottiig for the home garden.
The writer thinks the reason some
have had failure to a•iven tomatoes
in Huron County is because 'they
have set the .plants 400 close togeth-
er. It realty Tooke dike it waste of
ground to set the delicate little
plants so far apart but experience
shows that 4 ft. each way is neces-
sary to ripen the 'fruit.
You are fortunate if 5'ou :bet your
plants set just befote a rain as
they will grow ho much faster and
do better than of (planted at pny
other time. If you plant in dry
season it is (well to use a half a
cup of liquid .manure with each
plant. A cloudy day. of course, is
most favorable so She strong sun
will not reach the roots of the plant.
Insert the plant about one inch deep-
er in the soil ;than in the coldbed.
The writer has noticed this year
has been very unfavorable aro the
growers 0f plants, but elle indica-
tions are that the summer will be
dry and (tot and (thus very favorable
to the ripening of tomatoes in the
open field.
Now that. "alt things nre ready"
the plants are taken from the cold
frames in this tray -a large butcher
knife may he used in cutting square
blocks of plants ens 4, 6, or 8,,,in
a bunch and these me lined all to-
gether. with it spade, not disturbing
the soil about. the :roots, and care-
fully laid in a box or basket till
the name is filled. This is carried in
this way to the field and they nre
carefully taken apart or cut apart,
and planted.
In this way a boy could go ahead
and lay the [plants at the marked

the melting and another boy »who
waters. In 1 his method plants do
not often wilt at all.
Great rare should be taken not to
Pinch. bruise or twist the plants in
handling them. A sort of R pointed
paddle may he mads to make holes
in the moil for the then
when
the plant is inserted the soil should
be pressed about the roots. This is
even more important Allan pressing
it about the stem, ndhich, of course.,
will also he done.
