The government purposes to take
la refereeduut of all the municipali-
ties of Ontario to ascertain whether
they favor 4he first or [second Mon-
day of iDecember for voting day in
the municipal elections. This is be-
ing done in connection with the bill
which Mr. Preston, Brant, introduc-
ed early in the present session, pro-
viding that nomination shall be on
the last Monday in November, and
polling day the first Monday in 'De-
cember.
Hon. Mr. Monteith has made a
change in the clauses relating to
"speed trials" at agricultural fairs.
by enacting that proceedings in
which breaches of [bis law are charg-
ed can only be taken against the
societies by euembers for the current
year and `the year previous. This
means that 'the question of racing at
societies themselves. If the mem-
bers present and past agree that
they like to see the ponies go, :they
may let Ahern go without consider-
ing the opinions of outsiders.

much respected citizen in the per -

Gorvett, however, had been ail-
ing for several months and for the

his bed. IIe was born at bheep\vash,
Devonshire England in .1853 and
came to this country 33 }-ears ego.
On Nov. 15th 1879 he married Doro-
thy A. daughter of Thos. Ilern Us -
borne, who now mourns his decease.
Ile. had a family of eight children.
seven of whom survive him namely:

home; Mrs. Shaylor, St. Marys;

One brother, Albert resides at Strat-
ford and one brother and two sis-
ters still live in Dev'ohshire. a rhe
funeral was held last Saturday nf-
ternoon, interment being in Zion
cemetery. A large numbers number
of friends and acquaintances follow-
ed the remains to their last resting Tuesday of last week.

Mr. Itobt. Burns Aged 86 years.
and an old resident of Blanshard,
died at the home of his neioo, Mrs.
Alex Itoss. oil Friday last. The de-
ceased was well and favorably
known in Kirkton, having lived
within four miles of this place for
upwards of 50 years. lie retired
from his farm eight years ago to
make) his home with his neice.
Mr. John llanna is building a new
bridge across the creek on his farm.
Sir Evylyn, the celebrated Clyde
Stallion, recently purchased by Mr.
John Hanna, will commence Lis
route for the Season in a tow days.
Mr. John O'Brien will manage the
horse for the season. See bills for
